Other Factions?

By Darth Vilgore, in X-Wing Off-Topic

So I opened my U wing today and was going through the new pamphlet. A paragraph caught my imagination

Playing With Other Factions

Rather than playing Rebels vs Imperials, players can agree to use any faction instead of Imperials. Simply replace all reference to "Imperial" with the name of he appropriate faction.

Optional factions that come to mind is the Republic with ships such as a Delta 7 , ETA-2 Interceptor , Gunship Variations , V-Wing , ARC-170 or an N-1 .

The Confederacy faction would have to list ships like Vulture Droid variations , Droid Tri Fighters , Darth Maul's Infiltrator , General Grievous' Starship , or a Jango Fett Slave 1 .

There is plenty more to list from this era. And the Clone Wars has even more material to pull from. I know I would hate to get hit by a Buzz Droid . I'm thinking of it as a Missiles card that cancels all dice results if it hits. The defender suffers one face down damage card for two rounds then a face up damage card on the third round. Getting an ion token will stop the remaining effects of this card.

I could go on and on about the The Old Republic or Sith Empire . I truly believe the Yuuzhan Vong have passed into legends permanently.

Post your thoughts. Would you like to see additional factions? Perhaps see some of these ships added to current factions? Or do you think that these ships would be an over-saturation of the X-wing game market?

I don't see those as other factions (but I suppose they are) more as "Prequel X-wing". A lot of folks are yearning for ships from this era and The Old Republic. but for better or worse, they (FFG) won't likely do that any time soon. Maybe when production of ships from the classic trilogy & other films produced since the Disney acquisition are not catching anyone's interest then we might see them. OR when the movies have been around for 25-30 years & people are riding the nostalgia train to Prequel Town.

I'd like to see it happen one day. Maybe years from now, when they eventually make an X-wing 2.0, one of those eras will be what they use as a backdrop.

Got to thinking: I'd like to see a factionless "Faction"

In other words, I'd like to see ships and pilots that are not beholden to any faction. Does that make sense? I suppose they could be mercenaries or militia used to fill out the ranks of any of the 3 core factions in the game.

I largely hold that civilian acquired craft or generic hero ships should be faction neutral. It makes to easier to fit non-standard or neutral government ships and gives people to shake up their own lists, where as it makes little sense to convert a single operation craft as faction only when it's already non standard to see so many Advanced Imperial craft or New Republic E-Wings to fight TIE FOs.

Where as this paragraph is referring to various groups not officially affiliated with a faction government, such as the Corporate Sector, Rogue Imperial Warlords, or the Corellian insurrectionists.

I brought the Yuuzhan Vong into our group's 2015-2016 Imperial Campaign Format, configuring the ships to be true to the lore meant that everyone got butchered...

That's because none of the ships are balanced to be true to the lore.

Hadn't thought of that much. Love it though.
