Rogue One Prop Spotting.. warning spoliers and nerdage.

By Gadge, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Being in the militaria industry i couldnt help but spot a lot of 'real world' stuff used in R1 as props.

So far;

Rebel commandoes wearing current issue Russian army 'gorka' mountain suits.

Rebel commandoes with vietnam era M1 helmets with a tan cover and a 'blast shield' added'

Rebel commandoes with vietnam era m79 grenade 40mm vests

Rebel commandoes with sten gun bandoliers

Jyns backpack is a czech infantry rucksack from the 70s

One of the 'extremist' rebels has two British leather 1903 pattern bandoliers across the chest (same ones used by Jawas in a new hope!)

Jyns blaster pistol is a luger with a a body kit on.

Andors pistol is an M4 cut down to just the reciever and a 20 round mag.

Now i wasnt even *trying* to spot this stuff, my eyes just pick it out. Anyone else spot any real world militaria as props.

Obviously the stormtroopers still had the classic sterling SMG as E11 blasters!

Oh and krenniks pistol is a *very* cut down MP40.. and its an airsoft one as can be seen by the battery cut off switch on the bottom of the pistol grip... told you this thread would be nerdy!

Ugh

I could probably spot a M3 halftrack if it appeared in a sci-fi movie. Otherwise I'm no good at it.

I did spot a 40k Rhino (or early design vindicator) in Disturbed's "land of confusion" video. ;)

OK back from watching RO. And I did notice the helmets! They relly look like they're straight outta 'nam.

I like that they do this .. brings the fantasy into a realm of reality and helps sell it to us. The Star Trek phasers are a little too fantastic.

It's also in keeping with the original trilogy - kit bashing old models to build bigger SW ones.

Gadge, are the helmets the Rebel troopers wear on Endor's sanctuary moon from something particular real-world? I spotted a couple of those helmets in Rogue One as well.

I have this bizarre desire to see a Rogue One / Tropic Thunder crossover film now. Ben Stiller is a holonovel actor from Coroscant, trying to make a movie about the galactic civil war.... only to stumble upon the last bastion of the old Empire....

I dont think they are. If they are its so obscure i never notices it. I think they were a soft cap with the ribbing on and then a plastic 'doughnut' worn over it.

TBH, rogue ones 'props' are substantially easier to spot than OT stuff.

Like in the OT you really have to look to see that a concussion rifle is a lewis gun, that leia's blaster is a luger etc.

In R1 they made hardly any effort to disguise the M4/M16 base of a lot of the rifles, its a really distinctive reciever. In contrast the rebel rifles in ROTJ were a blend of m4/m16 and german STG44 from wwii.. so pretty obscure.

I'll have to check now :)

Did they hardly make an effort to disguise, or did they make an effort to give you a recognizable link? :P.

I think it was the latter. As someone said elsewhere R1 is really a War movie, so it seems likely they wanted a more military look to the equipment.

There is that but when you use stuff without any modification to it the sci fi falls down for me (in this case russian gorka suits.. very distinctive bit of kit tbh)

Battlestar Galactica was terrible for this. All the space stuff was superlative but the away team/ground mission stuff just looked like people playing airsoft as it was all modern real world camo and unconverted modern weapons.

In contrast , firefly was excellent for using hard to spot real stuff, putting it in a bodykit or out of normal context and fooling you.

I can see that, but I know I'd never notice that it was real life kit, let alone where it came from. I might recognize it on a subconscious level or even notice it looks like a M4 or something. But beyond that it wouldn't cause me any issues.

Cassian's "sniper configuration" rifle was a bit jarring for me, and then the commando's weapons on the beachhead were just all over the place.

But I still liked it. :D

Comming from hollywood: more movies that mix the Vietnam war with fantasy/scifi/kaiju stuff: Kong Skull Island. It's a bunch of american G.I.'s versus King Kong!

Many of the rifles on Hoth were VERY thinly disguised M16s . To me Cassians gun was a reference to that considering the care they took to get things right. Kind of in the same way the Hans pistol was unique in SW but by ESB half of the rebels seemed to have variant of it.

The trooper grenading Bodhi, that scene seemed so familiar. Is there a Vietnam movie with something similar? Hamburger Hill? Platoon?

Of the top of my head closest thing I could think of was this bit from apocalypse now

There was a trailer for "Kong" attached to Rogue One, and if that movie isn't a remake of the Vietnam-esque King Kong flick mentioned earlier, I don't know what is. There were several shots in the trailer that looked like exact replicas of Platoon or Apocalypse Now.

Edit: should've clicked Robin's link before describing the trailer...

I've yet to see that trailer on the big screen. (my vieuwing of R1 had no trailers as the projectionist was to bussy effin' about.)

I really liked the shot of 4 helicopters flying by and then one of them turns out to be a dragonfly in the forground.

Rumour has it Kong skull Island (along with godzilla 2015) is meant to lead to a (new) King Kong vs Godzilla!

Bodhi rook is wearing a SARVIP aircrew survival vest from the USA.

Also his jumper is a really faded tie fighter suit.

Not technically military gear, but one of the commandos protecting bhodi, the black trooper, has 3 cigarettes on his helmet as a nod to Vietnam era movies, I believe it's a call back to Full Metal Jacket or Platton, can't remember

Wonder if those were supposed to be 'deathsticks' instead of cigarettes?

I've decided those tubes on the helmet band are glitterstim.

With the tropical beaches, lush jungle and Huey-Wing gunships it was all a big nod to Vietnam movies. :P.
