Y wings anyone?

By Dazgrim, in Star Wars: Armada

Does anyone fly y wings? I've been looking around and people seem to use a's, b's, x's and I've seen mention of the rogues. But in 3 weeks I haven't noticed any mention of y's.

I run some as sort of filler. My base squadron screen before CC and Wave 5 is XXXXBBBYY+Jan

They are great. For example, the winning list at Worlds this year was a big Y-wing swarm with some Hawks for intel and some YT-1300s to keep the Hawks alive.

I have regularly been using four lately.

I love em. Great, tough little ships. Need a little help in the dogfight department. Perfectly fluffy.

Haha! Good thing I'm no doctor! Only 15 hours late to the OR.

In short, yes Y-wings are definitely used. They are very points effective bombers, and the low point cost coupled with the high hull makes for an extremely resilient bomber force in numbers. They also can be used as filler as others have mentioned. Dogfighting isn't what they do well, but with some buffs (Toryn Farr, Flight Controllers) they can hold their own due to their high hull.

Thanks to Norra Wexley and Gold Squadron I think we're going to see even more of them soon.

I use two as extra black dice for my Neb B escort. :)

They can certainly be built around. As en-masse squadron buffs become more available to the Rebels (as opposed to the enhance a few very powerful squadrons motif we had for Rebels early on), you'll start seeing more Y-wings.

It used to be that Yavaris was kind of the be-all-end-all of Rebel squadron builds. It wasn't the only way to play them successfully, but it was fairly unanimously the best way. Following that logic, the best way to maximize Yavaris is with a few very powerful units--that is, B-wings, Luke, H-6's, Nym, Keyan, etc. That's not how the Y-wings operate at all, which is why you didn't see a lot of them for a long time.

Now that we have BCC; cost-feasible mass-activation capability in flotillas, Hera, and relay; and will be getting Norra soon; they've suddenly become a much more competitive alternative to the Yavaris/B-wing kind of build.

I can see bwings being the fighter of choice for launch bays and y wings forming part of the initial deployment, cheap, effective, good speed and resilient. I think yavaris may start to be left at home a bit, As I can see engagement speeds going up ( the new fleet commanders from waves 3-5 encourage it) and lots more options to deploy rebel bombers.
