Racial Skills

By LukeZZ, in WFRP Rules Questions

A dwarf who starts with 4 skills + 2 specializations gets a fifth skill because of his Children of Grungni ability or he simply expands his career skills selection during creation?

Could you rephrase the question, please :)

During character creation if a dwarf spends 3 points in skills ("4 skills and 2 specializations") does he get a fifth skill because of his racial ability "Children of Grungni"?

Yes. That's how I'd do it.

Oddly enough I was coming here to ask a similar question today - So to confirm (the initial question is a bit oddly stated): The Wood Elf and Dwarven racial abilities that allow for players to 'train one of the following basic skills" at character creation means that they can do so for free. Right? The alternative would be that the skill is added to career skills and thus could be trained.

I am leaning towards the former, but it is bit unclear to me.

Hmmm.... We've been playing that they get them for free; however, on a second reading of the rules I'm no longer sure. The High Elf racial ability Composure says that they may choose one Focus talent for free and that it doesn't use any of the high elf's creation points. Erudite says that they acquire (but do not train) the advanced skill Education for free during character creation. The statements about choosing a basic skill to train do not have the disclaimer that they are free and do not cost any creation points, so an interpretation that they are just available in addition to career skills for creation points to be spent on is probably a valid one. Why else go to the trouble to point out that the Focus talent and the Education acquisition are free if the assumption is that all racial abilities are free and don't cost creation points?

bad editing?

It seems Fabierien is correct.

You don't need to buy the racial skill with any of the creation points. This is taken from the designer diary about Character Creation ( www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp )

"His 3 point investment in Skills allows him to train 4 skills and start with 2 specialisations. His dwarf racial ability Children of Grungni also allows him to train a skill relied on in dwarf culture. JR decides to use the Children of Grungni ability to train Resilience (he’s a tough ol’ dwarf), then selects four skills from the Dockhand career to train, choosing Athletics, Coordination, Intimidate, and Guile."

Or they've been playing it wrong :P

Good cath!

Thank you :-)

If you look at the Troll Slayer character in the demo adventure, and rebuild him - you come to the same conclusion. The Weapon Skill training is a bonus.
