So I have been thinking about a way to add complexity to the game during casual games. I was trying to differentiate between different power levels of different cannons/blasters on different ships. For example, Xwings have more powerful laser cannons than a Z95. So here is what I was thinking of doing. If I painted a few of my dices pips black it could represent 2 hits or more which I could then give said painted die to a more powerful ship(Xwing, Khirax, Defender, etc) and then they would have a better chance of scoring more hits. But I don't want to make a "weighted die" or make it cheating. Is it possible to paint a die without changing its probability of each side coming up?
Painting Dice? Will it mess them up?
I think you'd have to use a fair amount of paint before it affected how they roll to a meaningful degree.
But painting only some sides could make the dice illegal for a tournament, if that matters to you.
If you can evenly coat each side I don't think it will make a difference. Even if the coat isn't even it probably won't matter too much.
Also, assuming the the FFG dice are perfectly weighted, you would also need to put the same thickness of coating over the icons as well. Again, given the low mass of the paint relative to rest of the die, and the fact that they are not likely to be perfect anyway, I don't think it is a big deal.
Finally, I would not expect to be able to use these dice competitively. I am sure people would be asking questions as to why you did this so keep a spare 'clean' set as well.
Whether or not it changes the probability, FFG states that you are allowed to mark your dice to identify them as yours, so they'd be legal. And if anyone ever gives a stink, you're always able to request to use a single set of dice.
Edit: Here is the ruling
"Players may mark dice with a permanent or indelible marker to indicate ownership in an unobtrusive manner, but cannot otherwise alter them in any way." So paint is a no go, but permanent marker is okay!
Edited by KhyrosOk. So I'm guessing that the small amount of black paint in the pips will not really affect their rolling. And I'm only doing it to probably 3 dice and I have 15 of each color so even if they're not legal I don't really care.
you will be fine, TBH im surprised more people don't. The amount of times i hear "hey I am missing a die is that mine" you would think people would at least take a sharpee to them.
If you have to ask...
