First Aid and/or Damage Control

By edwardavern, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi all

RAW says each character can receive "one Medicine check each encounter". In this respect, it's similar to using Damage Control to restore Hull Trauma. In both cases, it seems to me that the RAI is that this is emergency patch-up work. In fact, the RAW specifically states that "there is only so much good first aid can do to help a character" with regards to this check.

I've been thinking about introducing a house rule that says neither of these things is possible unless the character/vehicle has actually suffered damage during this encounter . In other words, you can't use in-encounter (or post-encounter) Medicine checks to heal old wounds, and you can't use Damage Control to repair old damage.

Furthermore, I was thinking that - once those initial checks have been made - any further Medicine/Mechanics checks would have to be made somewhere with the appropriate facilities, such as infirmary, hospital, or sickbay for healing, or a workshop, spaceport, or junkyard for ship-repair.

The idea behind it is to prevent Medicine check / Damage Control spamming between encounters, to make the galaxy a bit more dangerous, and to add a bit more realism to the game (I know, I know, it's Star Wars , but it's nice to have a bit of realism). However, I'm concerned that this would leave dedicated "healer" characters with little to do...although I suspect it would make healing talents actually more powerful, especially things like Surgeon, Stimpack Specialisation and Natural Doctor. What do you think? Is this something other people are already doing, or is it something to avoid?

Thanks in advance.

When something says once an encounter, it means per initiative roll essentially, as an 'encounter' = structured gameplay. So what you're proposing is essentially what the rules already mean.

The book already says you have to have proper facilities to repair hull trauma and that you can only make one attempt outside facilities, and even then it's subject to GM approval.

This is what setback dice are for

Ah. So essentially I'm proposing the rules.

Well...good, I guess. Thanks.
