Overall, I was extremely pleased with the movie.

I thought it explored a darker side of the Rebellion even going so far to give as extremist factions that were deemed uncooperative to the Aliance.

The tone was darker, there was a lot more death and there was a greater amount of Rebels being hard combatants (head shots to downed troopers, etc.)

The style was something I had to get used to. Especially the way planet names appeared on screen seemed very "un-Star Warsy" to me. And I hated that it was done for all locations but somehow not for Mustafar...

Also I found it was a bit high on the fan service at times.

R2 and 3PO appeared as an afterthought and seeing Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan just took me out of it a bit. Both scenes added nothing to the story and were just there as an unnecessary wink to the audience.

Again, same as with TFA, we were shown a host of aliens that hardly made an appearance in the movie and this really isn't what I like to see. I enjoy Star Wars a ot for its xenos and wished we had had a few more shots and scenes with those amazing creatures... Two Tubes was wicked cool though!!!

Saw Garrera had a way larger and more interesting part than I had expected. And Whitaker nailed it.

On a whole I found the acting alright, but nothing close to the level of The Force Awakens. I wasn't really impressed with Luna. Thought Jones did a reasonable job (nothing stellar). Mikkelsen was underutilitized and his death scene was cringeworthy. Mendelsohn knocked it out of the park. And Tudyk might have given the third best performance of a droid in a movie I ever saw (after R2 and Hal 9000.)

I also quite liked how the droid was not subject to some farfetched nickname and was just refered to as "K".

So, Tarkin, huh? :)

Pretty cool to see him appear but not really so advanced that I didn't see through the CGI. Then again I knew it was an effect so perhaps I was a bad Judge. This weekend I am taking my wife to see it again and will see if she notices.

I thought Leia looked way more awesome actually.

Massive space battles, welcome back! I missed you!

All in all I think the movie was really, really worth it.

Not as goood as TFA but really good all the same.

Oh, and so many shots from the trailers are nowhere to be found in the final movie. Which is actually something I like...

I felt that the movie was divided to two parts. For me, first one was a bit boring normal hollywood movie, and the second part was awesome. I liked it more than I liked Force Awakens.

I also really enjoyed the movie was really about war. It was practically first star wars movie that acknowledged that the franchise is about war. http://imgur.com/gallery/s3e4i

Oh, and so many shots from the trailers are nowhere to be found in the final movie. Which is actually something I like...

I was really struggling with this. It was somehow distracting, because I was expecting/waiting for certain lines or Scenes and they never happened. Maybe I should even avoid the trailers next time. Though I don't I could actually do that....

Tarkin CGI also bothered me more than it should have. It was actually quite good, only the eyes were.... wrong. Fake. Somehow out of place. With all the CGI nowadays even in television shows, I'm surprised it looked so weird. I would actually have preferred a real actor who looks similar. But might be difficult to find a good one, especially since they gave him quite a large role. But I liked how his character was displayed.

Vader's upper body also looked weird to me. Must re-watch Ep. 4 before judging on that one, though.

Some of this might be, that I don't like 3D very much, but unfortunately it was the only midnight screening available at my locale cinema. Will have to re-watch in 2D.

Otherwise I really enjoyed it and totally agree with Dante's assessment. I would even give 10 Points for droids, as I liked K-2SO and was more moved by his death then anyone else's  . I liked how the film showed a really dark side of the rebellion and showed the actual war between the Empire and the Rebels. And I was surprised to see Jimmy Smits reprise his role as Senator Organa. Didn't know he was part of the cast. When they first showed him, I thought it would only be a short cameo because he just appeared next to Mon Mothma and had no lines in that scene. So I was happy to see that he actually added to the story later.

Also, it was nice to see that the film was able to add to the universe despite the fact that the outcome was pretty pre-defined. And I'm not just talking about new aliens and locations. But the fact that the Death Star's design flaw was really designed fits nicely into established canon. And the fact that there are still plenty of people remembering the Jedis was also a nice addition and it shows that only fools like Han Solo who buy the empire's propaganda believe them to be just some ancient religion.

And to forego the Star Wars opening crawl was the right move, because it shows that this is a very different film right from the beginning, so people who might expect a normal Star Wars movie get that expectation broken right at the beginning and can then (hopefully) enjoy the film. I confess I was sad for a moment not to see the crawl, because the crawl belongs to Star Wars, but it helped to set the film apart from the saga films.

If I had to give an opinion in one sentence: Rogue One is the best (and most expensive) Star Wars Fanfilm out there! :D

The force is with me and I am one with the force! ;)

Just back and mixed feelings. overall a great movie.

I did miss the crawl and fanfare, Yes it's a different star wars movie but even so.

my only other complaint is that although the space battle was awesome, I would have preferred a stealthy raid over what happened. This is too close to Yavin 4 for such a large battle not to be noted in ANH.

Other than that FANTASTIC I loved the film and need to do a SWRPG game with one of those gates. That's what this film felt like to me a good AoR Game (with some chars taken from the other lines).

Loved it! Force Awakens was a bit of a let down to me with its rehashed plot. But Rogue One really brings something new to the table. It's the best film I've ever seen in a theater. I actually teared up a couple of times. (When the Rebel fleet arrived and when the protagonists were facing their demise on the beach.) And it's very rare media does that to me. It was the best Star Wars movie made during my lifetime. It's up there with the original trilogy for me. My favorite flavor of Star Wars has some grit in it, nothing else has quite delivered that like Rogue One.

To be fair in ANH, Luke and co literally arrived with the deathstar hot on their tales. I could kinda buy that there wasn't much time for a debriefing, since that would have likely happened on the days between now and their arrival and by the end of it all, literally only Wedge and one Y-Wing survived both battles so there simply wasn't anyone left to tell the tale. Well and Leia.

I really hated the camino of CP30 and R2 though. That particular scene makes no sense as they would have had to leave with the fleet to actually take part in the battle.

I like how they wrote Blue out and I kind of like how they didn't go through any particlar effort on overembleshing most of the cast. I also like how much the movie made me hate the allience, since it;'s those very factions that would crawl back when the first deathstar was destoryed and probably the same bunch of tools that would decide to end the war after Jakku. XD

My RPG group has an ongoing joke about how whenever they do something insane with their ship they'll yell "Prepare for ramming speed!!!", so throughout the sequence where the Star Destroyer is rammed by the Hammerhead I was grinning from ear to ear (to be honest, I was grinning from about 30 minutes in, and my grin kept getting wider as the film went on). I'm now fully expecting my players to try something like that within the next session or two.

So, Tarkin, huh? :)

Life-like CG humans are definitely getting there. In fact I was surprised at just how much Tarkin was utilised considering the uncanny valley effect. I think Leia benefitted from having a very brief amount of screen time and only one line, in comparison with Tarkin who was actually pretty front and centre.

I always felt that the opening crawl of A New Hope implied that a major battle had taken place. It mentions a space battle and that during it spies stole the plans. Sure it's never addressed directly, but I was always picturing something big like this.

First off, I turned off my analytical, star wars nerd brain as soon as there wasn't the crawl. I knew if I wanted to enjoy this film to the fullest, I had to watch it like that. Enjoy it I did. Second viewing will get the analytical brain. These are just initial aftershock reactions. OKay, maybe it's a little analytical.

As far as shots from the trailer being absent, weren't there rewrites/reshoots? Am I making that up? I don't remember for sure but I bet that's why.

I loved it. I felt way more connected to the characters in this than in any other piece of star wars media. I think that's because this is really the first SW movie I've seen for the first time as an adult, besides TFA, but I think the characters live in a more morally grey area in this movie, and that makes them more real.

Yeah, some of the acting was a bit camp but its a ****** star wars movie, what do we expect? Some of the plot devices were a bit convenient, but it's a star wars movie, what do we expect? And I'm not saying bad acting/lazy writing get a pass, but I don't think that's what was going on here. My point is that this is still a star wars MOVIE and it operates as such, to a level that isn't too overboard (side-eye to TFA) but still exists with the general quirks of the genre. I don't personally think the fanservice moments were too numerous, although they were a bit jarring. What were there two? It's safe to say I enjoyed this much more than TFA. But don't tell Oscar Isaac, I wanna be best buds with that dude.

Anyways, that Vader scene, HOLY SMOKES. Actually terrified. Also, am I the only one that thought Donnie's staff/blaster was going to be a lightsaber at the end, with the way he was holding it and the shape of the tip? I got a little teary when his bud was cradling him. That's a first for SW for me. I was on that beach with them, emotionally.

Costume design? Hell yes. If the original trilogy was WW2, this was Vietnam. Loved that choice.

Tonally I'm in love. I hope all the star wars stories can be this compelling. Loved the dark parts. I live on that ****. The dread I felt at the end of the movie (I was so engrossed I actually forgot that everyone was going to die) was great. I want to ask any old-timers if this is how they felt after Empire. Sure, we know what happens, but shoot, that doesn't make what happened in the movie weigh any less on me.

Alan Tudyk and whoever animated K are the real winners here.

And yes, half my brain was playing a game of EOTE/AOE the whole movie because stealing imperial ships and uniforms to get into imperial facilities is 3/4 of what we do in my game hahaha.

Tl;dr just go see the movie. Convince Disney we need another gamble on non-established characters.

OH, and Tarkin. I hated the CGI. And it was super noticeable to my girlfriend, who is not familiar with the character at all. She immediately turned to me and said he looked weird. Leia looked better though, but she had way less to do.

You think any of the people (writers, etc.) played any star Wars rpg's? Probably not, but still.

Also, do you think the Ghost was able to escape? Was that one ship the Ghost at all? Did we just end up seeing the end of Rebels? W/ the ship and crew going ker-plowy!? TTnTT

Alas, I'm pretty sure the Yeti w/ the bfg's (Morof) and that guy they made an action figure of w/ the flappy mouth (Commander Pao) are dead now too. TTnTT

AND WHAT ABOUT BOOMER!?!?!? TTnTT

I know Pablo Hidalgo from the story group has talked about how he used to GM a Star Wars game.

I spotted the Ghosf a few times during the final battle and it was parked at Yavin at the beginning. Didn't see it escape, but I imagine it did. I've seen online that some people have mentioned spotting Chopper at the base when Mon Mothma is informed of the attack on Scarrif.

I love spoilers!!! (I blame working in a movie theatre :) ). So my big question is .... is Donnie Yen's character a former Jedi or just a Force using bad ass with a staff? I'll be seeing the movie sometime in the next few days but I gotta know!!!

Truth is, we don't know. From what little I can tell from the film, he used to work at a Jedi Temple, but whether he was a full-fledged Jedi or just some other type of Force-Using Warrior that did guard duty, I can't say for certain. Also, the Whills are mentioned. So, slowly but surely, we are starting to get back bits of the Legends verse.

Loved the announcement for General Syndulla on Yavin.

I know alot of ppl. here have their gripes about the film, but I loved it. It may change over time, but it made a good first impression on me. Unlike Ep III, this was a serious and dark film that actually felt like it fit the setting rather than just being dark for the sake of being dark (alot of Snyder films, Ep. III.). I do think there were some plot issues here and there, but I still think the script (at least from what we saw on screen) seemed to be quite possibly the best written overall of the Star Wars Films. I know I'm going to get flak for this, but it's my opinion. My main quibbles was Whittaker's character refusing to run and doing an Obi Wan and how the female lead flipped from runner to true believer almost as fast as Luke Skywalker. I love how the film felt like this mash-up of Blade Runner, Mad Max, Original Trilogy, and bits of various gritty WWII and Vietnam films and were thrown into a blender and somehow it worked. And somehow did this w/o an R Rating for the violence and gore you usually see in darker/more realisitic war films.

I knew I was gonna like it when Cassian offed the informant in the beginning.

Also I found it was a bit high on the fan service at times.

I do wish they had left out both of those fanservice items.

I wish we had seen more of them here, and I do hope we’ll see more of them in the future.

So, Tarkin, huh? :)

I was fine with the concept of seeing them very briefly, mostly from behind. You kind of need that, in order to tie the stories together.

But the less time with their actual faces on screen, the better. CGI is getting better in this area, but it’s still not good enough.

Overall, I would rate it about equal with TFA. Not as good as the OT, but better than the PT.

Loved the announcement for General Syndulla on Yavin.

I did catch that, and was glad to hear it.

I’m also glad they didn’t go beyond an audible on that — this bit of fanservice doesn’t need to be seen on-screen.

I knew I was gonna like it when Cassian offed the informant in the beginning.

That was a bit unexpected for me. It did show another dimension to the Rebel Alliance, which I thought was good.

Otherwise I really enjoyed it and totally agree with Dante's assessment. I would even give 10 Points for droids, as I liked K-2SO and was more moved by his death then anyone else's  . Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, just a bit unexpected for me.

From the way he was played, I don’t think he was supposed to be a Jedi. He was certainly Force-sensitive, and may have known Jedi and maybe even worked with them. But I think he may have been from a difference tradition. And I don’t think he was nearly as strong with the Force as most Jedi are.

Saw it tonight. It was really good IMO.

Still have chills thinking about the Vader scene. Quite possibly one of my favorite parts of the film.

I enjoyed the amount of comedy they put into the film... It needed moments of levity or it would have felt really, really dark.

Tarkin CG fooled me for a couple seconds until I looked closer. It wasn't terrible (see TRON Legacy for terrible CG faces).

Will read everyone's debate in the morning, still processing myself (and I need to get to bed), but here is my TL;DNR thoughts:

* Michael Giacchino crushed the soundtrack. Much better than the flacid E7 score that Williams did.

* I didn't like the herky-jerky action sequence in the city streets at the start. But this is just that the art of composing an action sequence is dead in Hollywood and not so much Star Wars' fault.

* Vader's neck looked wrong, his helmet didn't sit well on his shoulders.

* The CGI Cushing looked really weird. They really should have gotten that dude from Sith to play the part.

* Otherwise, a fine Star Wars flick. Would watch again!

The rankings may change on second viewings, but for the moment, in descending order:
- Empire
- New Hope
- Jedi
- Sith
- Rouge one
- Clones
- Phantom Menace
- Force Awakens

Saw it. Enjoyed it. looking forward to seeing the sequel.

CGI didn't hurt it for me. Fun to see Tarkin and Leia. Enjoyed the darker side of the Rebellion. And the fact that it wasn't about glowstick swinging minigods. I would recommend it to all though.

Hmmm not bad If I do say so myself.

I, Robot :)

I haven't had a chance to see this wondrous story yet, but even following spoilers I am excited for when I finally do. :)
