Overall, I was extremely pleased with the movie.
I thought it explored a darker side of the Rebellion even going so far to give as extremist factions that were deemed uncooperative to the Aliance.
The tone was darker, there was a lot more death and there was a greater amount of Rebels being hard combatants (head shots to downed troopers, etc.)
The style was something I had to get used to. Especially the way planet names appeared on screen seemed very "un-Star Warsy" to me. And I hated that it was done for all locations but somehow not for Mustafar...
Also I found it was a bit high on the fan service at times.
R2 and 3PO appeared as an afterthought and seeing Ponda Baba and Dr. Evazan just took me out of it a bit. Both scenes added nothing to the story and were just there as an unnecessary wink to the audience.
Again, same as with TFA, we were shown a host of aliens that hardly made an appearance in the movie and this really isn't what I like to see. I enjoy Star Wars a ot for its xenos and wished we had had a few more shots and scenes with those amazing creatures... Two Tubes was wicked cool though!!!
Saw Garrera had a way larger and more interesting part than I had expected. And Whitaker nailed it.
On a whole I found the acting alright, but nothing close to the level of The Force Awakens. I wasn't really impressed with Luna. Thought Jones did a reasonable job (nothing stellar). Mikkelsen was underutilitized and his death scene was cringeworthy. Mendelsohn knocked it out of the park. And Tudyk might have given the third best performance of a droid in a movie I ever saw (after R2 and Hal 9000.)
I also quite liked how the droid was not subject to some farfetched nickname and was just refered to as "K".
So, Tarkin, huh?
Pretty cool to see him appear but not really so advanced that I didn't see through the CGI. Then again I knew it was an effect so perhaps I was a bad Judge. This weekend I am taking my wife to see it again and will see if she notices.
I thought Leia looked way more awesome actually.
Massive space battles, welcome back! I missed you!
All in all I think the movie was really, really worth it.
Not as goood as TFA but really good all the same.
