The focus needs to be on the ship

So youd have to pull from rey

Also have to not run gunner or tailgunner or tactician

I'm not so sure, the droid says your focus tokens. One of "your" focus tokens is sitting on Rey on that ship.

It's Rey's focus until she gives it back to the ship ("you") at the beginning of combat. Same as with Gonk, you can't take hits on stored up shields.

You refers to the active ship. Rey crew is not the active ship.

For the purposes of use for abilities and dice rolls, the focus tokens on Rey are 'out of the game'.

To bring them 'back' into the game, you have to move it from her card to your ship at the start of the combat phase.

I think you'll get better mileage out of Jyn Erso Crew than Rey with R5-P9.

R5-P9

At the end of the Combat phase, you may spend 1 of your focus tokens to recover 1 shield (up to your shield value).

Rey

At the start of the End phase, you may place 1 of your ship's focus tokens on this card. At the start of the Combat phase, you may assign 1 of those tokens to your ship.

The key here is 'you'.

You, as per rules reference:

Many Ship card abilities use the word “you” to refer to the corresponding ship. Upgrade and Damage cards that use the word “you” refer to the ship to which the card is assigned.

Rey reassigns the focus token away from the ship to the upgrade card. We know that those two are different due to Gonk.

"Your" refers to the ship and not the specific upgrade cards.

If the Focus token on the upgrade card counted as being on the ship then wouldn't the same thing apply to Shield tokens and Gonk? How about Energy on the huge ships?

Good news though, Palob, Teroch, Wes, and HotCop can't do anything to the focus tokens that Rey is hording. Win some, lose some.

I tried this combo on an ARC. It's not worth it, as Fickle says.

You only usually get to hoard 2 focus tokens even if you move slowly unless your opponent is doing something similar. And they get spent very quickly, so your precious crew does nothing for most of the game.

Or even pay the extra point for Recon Specialist for a guaranteed 2 Focus tokens per turn. I like Jyn but the meta seems to be moving to 2-3 ship squads as being the norm which means that getting extra Focus tokens out of her becomes harder. I think her main benefit is the ability to pass tokens to other ships that might need them more.

As long as you don't come across any PS8 w/ init bid (to pass init to you) or PS9 pilots. Otherwise you'll still want LRS, and then why bother with Rey?
