Apologies if this is a stupid question, I'm still very much a newbie to X-wing. I was wondering if there exists (probably unofficially) a tournament where forces from the same faction cannot fight each other. One way I see it working is that each player brings two lists, each from a different faction, and if two players want to use the same faction, they toss a coin or something to decide who goes to their alternate.
It would definitely be more work (and more expensive, and possibly shutting out people who have specialised in one faction), but it might be an entertaining game day event to avoid 'My Poe shoots at your Poe' situations.
Is there such a thing as a 'no civil war' tournament?
No.
The problem with bringing two lists, is that the games that tend to require two decks requires two games per match. Which doesn't work very well at all in this game.

I'm not sure why this theoretical format would require 2 games per match. You could always randomize who took what role and just have one game per matchup. It would be no more unfair than the current system, with a big caveat in the fact that the metagame tends to favor certain factions at any given point. If you allowed players to choose from Imperial, Scum, and Rebel, you would probably be fine.
I don't see any functional problems with the format, but I'm not sure how how much enthusiasm there is out there for it, especially if that is the only way you are making the games more thematically appropriate.
Edited by BabaganooshSure, it's a thing if you want it to be. But from my experience, once you get to the tournament level, no one really minds the minimized thematics of the game. At that point its the game mechanics that are really at the forefront of enjoyment. The Star Wars element just provides a pretty skin to the game for visual purposes.
I haven't ever seen such a tournament attempted. However, there is a somewhat related official format called "Hanger Bay" that is quite fun. In Hanger Bay, each player brings two squads. At the start of each tournament round, you and your opponent get to see both of each other's squads. You then each secretly choose which of your own squads you will actually fly that round. The choices are revealed simultaneously. An additional optional-but-recommended rule the TO can impose is that your two squads must be of different factions, which is what makes it similar to your idea.
I ran a Galactic Civil War team tournament way back when.
Rebels only played Imperials and whichever side had the most points won the tournament.
I personally think that if you want to make the game more thematic, you should probably be using scenarios rather than sticking with deathmatches.

Am I the only one that was confused because I thought the Empire vs. the Rebellion WAS the Civil War?
I was like, "What? Scum and Villany only?"

Oops, yes, bad wording choice. I've heard of computer games talking about 'the civil war level' where you fight your own forces,
Thanks for the answers. From what I've read it seems that the Star Wars theme is minimised in official tournaments, and really comes out in Epic Scenarios. Is this the general case?

I realize you're talking about tournaments but, casualy we never play the same faction on both sides.
Your idea "One way I see it working is that each player brings two lists, each from a different faction" I love and thought that a long time ago. But remember the last time an Imperial squad won at worlds? They don't! So that might be a loosing proposition. But I still like the concept.

Probably depends on what kind of scenario you're talking about, but yes. In tournament play, the focus is understandably on leveraging game mechanics to increase your squad's power and chances of winning.
That attitude can carry through to epic play, too. But generally the competitive focus is on the standard game.
Scenarios of any size can be built to bring out the thematic aspects of X-wing.
There is no "civil war" where i play
We always talk **** about one another, civility be damned
Edited by ficklegreendiceIf you do that why not just say everyone needs to bring a squadron for all three factions? Two people meet up and simultaneously reveal what faction they want to play; if both are the same then NO ONE plays that factions and they decide between the remaining factions with a coin flip if both have the same 2nd choice. You might do a squadron reveal before faction preferences are made to try encouraging some rock-paper-scissors when it comes to selection but that isn't always going to work.
Unless you play things both ways I'm afraid that requiring matches to be against different factions could turn your final tournament results into just some random rolls. If someone has a very strong list on one side and only a so-so list on the other but they overwhelmingly use one then the results would be eschewed.
If you have a trouble with mentally picturing blue on blue battles just think of the whole thing as a massive training exercise instead of a cut throat "DESTROY THEM ALL" battle.

From the title I was expecting 'no ships from the OT movies' which could be an interesting format - except that it's pretty much the meta at the moment except Falcons, Biggles and the occasional Eyeball, Squint and Dupe.
