Decimator has 1 health. I attack Manroo with 2 Hull. One hit lands. Leaving Roo at one hull. I want to use Vader to give myself 2 damage and leave the 1 crit to finish off Roo. But Manaroo players wants to pain bot. Who gets to play their card first. Also is RAC so he is pilot skill 8, shooting first.
Decimator vs Pain Bot
They're both Step 8 abilities (after attacking/defending, do not perform an additional attack), so the player with initiative resolves theirs first. Pilot skill is irrelevant. The only time Pilot Skill is used to resolve a timing conflict is when two ships want to Decloak.
If you have initiative, you can Vader before Manaroo can pain-bot. It's important to note that even if you get lucky and Vader a direct hit, finishing off Manaroo, she still gets to pain-bot. The reverse is not true. If Manaroo has initiative and pain-bots first, killing the Decimator, then you can't Vader. That's because Vader's self-damage is a cost, while R5-P8's is a side-effect.
tl;dr: whoever has initiative resolves their thing first.
Thanks Digital for answering two of my questions. Appreciated

I am thinking that since no ships are removed from the play area until the attack is completely finished and a ship can have more damage cards dealt to it than are needed to destroy the ship. You can still pay the cost of 2 additional damage to the Decimator even if R5-P8's hit destroyed it prior to Vader doing his thing due to initiative.

I can see how you got there, but there's a specific FAQ ruling that says otherwise:
A ship equipped with Darth Vader can use this ability only if it has at least 1 hull remaining.
Other than the fact that this game doesn't involve reduction of hull but rather accumulation of damage cards until you have as many as your hull rating, that's pretty clear.

Yep, should have looked at the FAQ. Foiled again ![]()

That was legal before FAQ.
There was even option to do: deci on 1 hull > vader > -1 hull >gunner > vader > -3 hull in total.
But they fixed it ![]()
