Escalation tournament. Any advice?

By Rasseman83, in X-Wing

It looks like we're having an escalation tournament for those who doesn't make the cut at a regionals I'm attending this weekend.

Of course my goal is to make the cut. But IF?

I have never played escalation before. I know the rules but have no idea what to bring.

My main faction is Imperial (bringing commonwealth defenders for Swiss rounds) but I could also consider Scum. Never those filthy rebel terrorists though.

So, anyone has some nice ideas?

Bring your aces early, and then pile on support in later rounds. Only played escalation once, and I made the mistake of bringing 2 YVs early, and then adding on Xizor. If I did it the other way around, would have went a lot better.

Played small escalation tournament half month ago.

So my whole list was:

Round 1 60/60

Scum Boba Fett (47p) (49p R2->)

- Adaptability

- 4LOM

- Homing Missiles

- Slave 1

- Extra Munitions

- Guidance Chips

- (Glitterstrim R2)

Binayre Pirate (13p)

- Slicer tools

Round 2 90/90

Palob Godalhi (28p)

- Trickshot

- TLT

- Vectored Thrusters

Round 3 107/120 :D

Binayre Pirate (13p)

- Slicer tools

Round 4 150/150

Kath Scarlet (47p)

- Veteran Instincts

- Tailgunner

- Glitterstims

- Engine Upgrade

Went 3-1, but won with superior MoV as no one went undefeated. First game I two-shotted enemy x7 Defender with Boba. Second game Palob evaded ~60mins two x7 defenders while Boba killed his whole list. Third game I lost due to bad flying. Won last game against 9 tie swarm (6 cracks, wampa, dark curse + omega leader) 150-36. (half kath + z95)

I know you won't bring a rebel list, but think through their potential lists and the lists from other factions. Get in the mindset of what the format is capable of bringing.

I have heard in the past that you may always have one bad round due to building up a certain ship. Some people prepare for this by taking a weaker round at some point in order to have stronger rounds down the road. That being said, I believe you can have strong rounds every time if you build efficiently.

You can fit naked Dengar and Manaroo into the first 60 points. It would be risky, but it could be deadly in later rounds.

OK. So I've come up with this after a very frustrating evening of list building attempts.

60 PTS.

Omega Leader with Juke and Comm Relay.

Colonell Vessery with X7 and Veteran Instincts.

90 PTS.

Add 1 Onyx squadron pilot with X7

120 PTS.

Add 1 Onyx squadron pilot with X7

150 PTS.

Add 1 Onyx squadron pilot with X7

Vessery and OL are great versus small amount of ships in the first round.

And the Onyx pilots are just solid for 30pts. Plus 4 defenders in a list. Yay!

Think of round 1 as though you've already entered the endgame of your 100-point list. Rebels will almost assuredly have some sort of regen (TLT Miranda and Corran are both really strong in this format), so you'll need some way to counter that.

Try reverse list building. Start at the last round and then take upgrades/ships off until you get to your 60 point match.
