Spending tokens + SnapShot

By MartnAR, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hey all, just had this question with my gaming group and we were wondering if anybody could clarify this issue we have with snap shot:

"After an enemy ship executes a maneuver, you may perform this attack against this ship. Attack: Attack 1 ship. You cannot modify your attack dice and cannot attack again this phase."

Now, the card clearly states that you cannot modify any attack dice. But is does this impede you from spending focus/evade/stress tokens to trigger abilities like Garvin Dreis' or Keyan Farlander's?

Thanks!

We had a situation like this pop up a week or two ago. I forget the exact ability that he wanted to trigger, but we came to the consensus that if he can spend the token without modifying the dice, then it would be okay.

An example would be Keyan Farlander. We were saying that if snapshot rolled all blanks or hits, it would be okay to use his ability, as no dice would actually be modified.

Chances are we were dead wrong, and I don't know the rules well enough to accurately judge this situation.

If “Omega Leader” has an enemy ship locked, when that ship attacks or defends against “Omega Leader,” that ship cannot resolve abilities that would modify dice, even 0 dice, such as Keyan Farlander’s ability.

I think it's safe to apply this logic to Snap Shot as well. Along the lines of "If a ship is attacking using Snap Shot, that ship cannot resolve abilities that would modify its attack dice, even 0 dice, such as Keyan Farlander's abilitiy".

Edit: to clarify that the ship using Snap Shot is only prohibited from modifying its attack dice, not any other dice.

Aye, you cannot spend a token without modifying dice. The example where Garven or Keyan modify 0 dice but still spend the token is only acceptable because they are modifying 0 dice. If you were allowed to spend without modifying, HSCP + Gunner wouldn't be a thing.

The reason you can use some of those abilities even if you don't change anything is because zero is a valid number of dice to modify.

But if you are not allowed to modify your dice, that means you also can't modify zero dice, so you can't spend the focus or stress token.

Keyan Farlander's ability is a modification to the dice - Remove a stress to change. If you can't change the dice, I don't think you can remove the stress.

Garvin's ability works when you spend a focus token. I guess if you had a blank or 2 hits, you could spend it, but not sure what happens if you have a focus showing and try to spend it.

Thanks guys! Real helpful clarification!

You can definitely use Keyan's ability to modify 0 dice during most attacks:

When attacking, if Keyan Farlander has a stress token, he can use his ability even if he hasn’t rolled any [focus] results; in this case, 0 dice are modified but 1 stress token is removed.

But based on the "Omega Leader" FAQ, you (the ship that is attacking) can't use any abilities to modify your attack dice, even 0 dice, when attacking with Snap Shot.
