U-wing in action! Baze actually useful?

By Wraithdt, in X-Wing

Just finished a game with a friend of mine not too long ago where he used Baze Malbus to good effect. He put Baze on Norra and basically used it to bypass Biggs and hammer my VCX100; a pretty nifty trick I must admit. M9-G8 from Thane helped ensure that the first shot misses and he managed to get Baze to kick in a few times in this way. Although I still think he's a very situational upgrade, in this case though he played a significant role in taking down the biggest threat to his list.

Also, I believe this is the first time ever a U-wing hit the tables;) My verdict so far is that flipping the pivot wing at the right moment is key to flying the U-wing successfully. I definitely missed a couple of opportunities to do so this game. Something to get use to.

Such an awesome model. How does the wing mechanism feel? Solid?

Pretty solid.

When did they start shipping? Where did you pick one up this soon?

The U-Wing model looks amazing on the table.

Can't wait to get my hands on one in the new year :)

It's a contributor's copy from FFG.

shipping already .... great to know

The ship itself looks incredible. I can see myself getting three of these.

What was your list?

PS 5 - •Biggs Darklighter (26 Points) [integrated Astromech, •R4-D6 (1 pts)]

PS 3 - •Heff Tobber† (31 Points) [Fire-Control System (2 pts), Ion Projector (2 pts), Pivot Wing†, •"Zeb" Orrelios (1 pts), •Cassian Andor† (2 pts)]

PS 3 - Lothal Rebel (43 Points) [Autoblaster Turret (2 pts), Fire-Control System (2 pts), •Ezra Bridger (3 pts), •Hera Syndulla (1 pts)]

I've been looking at Heff Tobber with Cassian Andor in crew slot. What did you think of that combo? Zeb looks like a good option for that, but I was thinking Jyn Erso since the only actions for the UWing right now are TL and Focus which you can Focus as your main action and TL from FCS so figured Jyn would be a nice additional upgrade card action.

I think Zeb isn't really necessary; didn't even get to use him. Switching IP to APL and tossing in Sabine for some bomb action. Heff's ability didn't really get much use with only Focus and TL available so I hope having some Prox Mines to drop would allow him to do extra dmg.

Been shipping for a while now. Released in two days.

isnt Baze counter productive on Norra? she doesnt do much w/o a TL

She can token strip.

And in the case of facing Biggs, Baze stops Biggs working properly as long as you can miss him, which is just funny.

Oh i get it. Target biggs first, opt out of the title, fire 2 dice at Biggs and hope you didnt land 2 natural hits. Cant target biggs again, fire at intended target.

I mean, you're right that Baze is not synergistic on Norra though. In any other situation I don't think those are points well-spent.

What abotu Baze on a stressARC? 2 points cheaper than Gunner but you can't focus fire your stress and have to spread it around. Too limiting?

Yeah I thought about this potentially nasty combination for a UWing bomber. Whether it's Heff Tobber or a standard Blue, you can equip it with this setup.

Sabine, Chopper, Pivot Wing, Extra Munitions, Action bomb of your choice, and Advanced Sensors. Looking at Advanced Sensors along with an action bomb, with Pivot Wing, with Chopper.....so many possibilities. :D

not really

Splitting fire is generally a bad idea. You want to concentrate on a target until it cant shoot back

So unless the other ARCs have torps, it is a pointless gimmick that only does anything against biggs in particular, and then not even very well

Given the rise of 2-3 ship lists in the meta, I think Baze is going to struggle to find a niche. Anything without a PWT has very little guarantee of having a second viable target in arc.

I can understand the concept of a cheaper but more restricted gunner but I think Baze is just too situational. There are never enough crew slots and he costs 3 points meaning you will not throw him into a list as an after-thought. If you want the functionality of a gunner, it is worth the extra 2 points to make sure it triggers as often as possible.

Looking at the U-wing on the table (from your pics) it does make sense it is a large base.

Question now becomes, should I buy one or two?

Hotshot Copilot and Baze on a high PS falcon might be a thing... but it's an expensive thing that doesn't give a lot of damage potential compared to the standards.

Maybe it's time Rebels got a 3 crew ship with either a PWT or some sort of extra arc(s).

You would never use baze over gunner in any scenario

He is easily the worst, most situational and least useful card in the expansion by a country mile

Unless in the case where you got wes jensons ability on a crew bearing shio, youd STILL spring for gunner

Not being able tp concetrate on one target kills the card, especially since it is literally worthless against only one target

Only Baze combo with some merit is Baze and Cpt Rex crew. TL what you want to shoot. Shoot at something else and miss. Cpt Rex gives you a focus for the missed shot. Now you have TL + Focus for your intended target. Its 5 points, so basically the same as Gunner.

Buy 4 and run 4 Blue Squads with FCS/Title :D
