Rogue One Discussion Thread
I heard somewhere there was a ship that looks like a TIE Striker that was bigger in the film.
So far I know the Imperial ships appearing are:
1. Star Destroyers styled after ANH's Star Destroyers
2. TIE Striker
3. Krennic's shuttle
4. 4-winged Imperial transport
5. TIE Fighter
Anything new? What about this big TIE Striker. Oh em gee was it a Decimator?
No. It looked like a TIE Striker, but instead of a TIE viewport, it had something closer to a flat wedge. Like the Lambda's cockpit, or Kenkric's Ugly-class shuttle's.
To me it (if we're talking about the same thing) looked kind of like a box with TIE-Striker wings stuck on it, maybe an atmospheric transport or bomber?
It was a troop lander basically, but with Striker wings. It drops the Death Troopers into the ground battle. It's escorted by Strikers and seemed to be the same size, just with a different body.
It was a Deathtrooper transport.
Edit Also not on your list:
- Lambda shuttle
- TIE Bomber (most likely TIE Shuttle, considering it was a boarding operation)
Edited by eMeMYeah, it was the transport that Krennic's guards used when they were trying to stop the last of the Rebels from reaching the uplink controls. It has the same wings as the Striker, but a boxier fuselage to accommodate the troops it was transporting. Somewhat wedge shaped. Did not appear to be significantly larger than the regular Striker.
The 4-winged craft is a cargo lifter. It appeared to have detachable containers underneath it, but you never seem them detached.
To add to Hashemite's list:
Lambda Shuttle
There was also an appearance of two TIE Bomber-style double-fuselage craft, though it was not clear to me whether they were bombers, or TIE Shuttles, as you only see them from behind. Somebody with a better eye for the differences might be able to tell you.

Are there any differences?
There were two types of transports, let's call it a transport shuttle and a transport barge. The shuttle is what Rebels stole on Eadu, and the barge was much larger, with a flat top and 8 wings, 2 for every corner. The barge was passing through the shield gate when the fleet attacked so the crew couldn't immidiatelly close the shield and let some Blue Squadron crafts in.

I thought the CGI Peter Cushing was amazing. Yes, I knew it was CGI because I knew he was dead; but I felt it was entirely convincing.
The use of footage Red and Gold Leaders was brilliant and seeing Dutch definitely got a whoop of joy out of me in the cinema.
TBH the only releases taken from Rogue 1 to me would be Krennics shuttle and the Striker transport. However, in all honesty, I think we have enough shuttles as is. Probably they could do the striker shuttle with adaptive wings which would distinguish it from the TIE Shuttle... but w/e.
The movie was just awesome!
Edited by IG88EYup. It was everything I've ever wanted in a Star Wars film since first seeing ANH as a small boy back in the 80s (on VHS taped from TV no less!).
I agree. What I reeeeeally love about the movie is how its existence makes ANH even better. Imagine seeing Rogue 1 first... you'll hate the empire, fear Darth vader etc.
And I loved how they pictured the Empire as almost-all-powerful and primarily ruthless, not like a bunch of incompetent evil space nazis such as the first order. I really had the feeling that the imperial troops acted like real soldiers, not headless goons.
What was the choke pun Vader said? I didn't get it well during the movie

It sounded to me like:
Be careful not to choke on your aspirations (said immediately after Force Choking him for a few moments.
Since aspiration, in linguistics, has to do with rough breathing:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspiration
as well as being another term for ambitions - it's punny.
Didn't even catch the aspiration but don't choke on them was enough for me.
Glorious. Obi-Wan would be proud.

It's funny that the CGI Tarkin is a more convincing and better played villain than Hux
I do wonder if anyone new to the universe and unaware that the actor has been dead for decades would have picked up on it.
As soon as he was on screen my wife leaned in to me and whispered "Why is that guy CGI?" then I whispered back that the original actor had been in the first film fifty years ago and was long dead. She picked it up immediately.
In contrast to others here I have to say I really liked the optic of CGI Tarkin and Leia.
I find it interesting that so many of you didn't pick up in Tarkin. As someone in the CG industry it was screaming at me in every shot it was in... but obviously I have no real perspective on it.
Glad to hear it did alright in general, though.

How much of Tarkin was due to the actor themselves? Did they do the voice and everything - with the CGI only being done to make them look more Cushing-ish? Or did someone else to the voice as well, with the actor only providing the "body"?
And do you think it lived up fairly well to the original Cushing performance?

Also, a lot of people that did not pick it up went to see the 2D version - maybe here's the key? The lower picture quality kinda smooths out the CGI and makes it blend better.
I don't know how anyone couldn't pick it up. It stuck out like a sore thumb, and I saw it in 2D.

Agreed. And Leia was bad too... ;(
(thankfully they can remake those CGI characters in like 15 years)
Tarkin jarred me slightly in the first moment - but the voice sold me later on, and the CGI became less noticeable.
