It is fine that he was there, very fitting given the story, character and continuation.
I just can't get over how fake he looked. :/

Yeah, Tarkin was a let down. The CGI just isn't quite there yet, and it was obvious.
But man, apart from that, this movie blew me away. It exceeded my expectations by such a large margin I can't even think of an appropriate metaphor!
Anyone who has seen this movie and thinks the X Wing doesn't deserve a barrel roll action needs their head read.
And
that final scene with Vader, oh my god oh my god OH MY GOD! Incredible!
I do wonder if anyone new to the universe and unaware that the actor has been dead for decades would have picked up on it.
All those how didn't like cgi tarkin .... what format did you watch it in
e.g. i guess hardly any one saw it it IMAX Laser 3D because i think you will find that it makes a very big difference

I've watched it in both and actually thought he looked better not in IMAX, something about the picture being a little less crisp helped smooth out some of the uncanny valley oddness. I definitely found him less jarring second time around.

I was kinda aware he was dead, but had to check once I got back home. To me, he was totally believable, save maybe one or two scenes.
Watched it in 2D. I'll see if I notice the difference in another cinema.

Kinda same here, if I hadn't known Cushing was dead (even if he wasn't, he'd be way to old to play pre-OT Tarkin), I'm not sure I would have realised it was CGI.

Sure the actor is dead, but full-CGI is still not able to look exactly like a real human does. CGI Tarkin and Leia, despite all the efforts, still look fake. They could have minimized the problem with less close-ups on them.
I thought Leia was the world's happiest Cosplayer, not CGI...
Also, as far as X-wing is concerned: who the heck is Heff Tobber and why isn't the 3rd U-Wing pilot K2-SO?
Also, as far as X-wing is concerned: who the heck is Heff Tobber and why isn't the 3rd U-Wing pilot K2-SO?
two possibilities:
1. K2S0 will be featured as a crew card in a future product.
2. FFG wasnt told about K2S0 during development. Perhaps his piloting scene were added during the reshoots and so FFG wasnt told.

3D iMax here.
3D Imax and I don't think I'd be fooled, but I noticed many people who watched it in 2D found it very convincing. Gonna see it in 2D in a few days so I will have comparison.

The question is then where did Heff Tobber come from? Was he cut, or it's not a he but a she, the only background U-wing pilot with a few lines of dialogue?

I havent found any mention of Heff Tober beyond this game. He may be FFG's own creation for a unique U-wing pilot, or maybe he was supposed to be K2-SO but they werent given the name in time. Like how only Poe Dameron was named in the TFA core set, the rest was Blue, Red Ace....etc....
Defo shot right up into my top 2 Star Wars films along with Empire. Excitment is making me want to say it's my fav though. It was everything I wanted in a classic-era SW film. So many references and use of the tech and ships.
Every time we saw an Imperial installation I was looking for Lambda shuttles, and then right at the end we got one! And with Tie Shuttles no less! And Y-Wings got used as actual bombers a few times, and the ion torpedo bit was ace. The bridge of the Hammerhead (great name-drop) looked exactly like it does on Rebels too.
Also a reference no one has mentioned in here yet. After Jyn first meets Chirrut and they are walking away, Cassian explains them as being the 'guardians of the Whills' and I almost lost my mind. Is that our first canon reference to the Whills? Also on Jeddah behind Cassian at one point there is a VERY brief glimpse of a probe droid with a slight sound effect.
Also now have it in my head that when one of the X-Wing pilots is being chased by a Tie and says "I can't shake her!", that the Tie was Howlrunner. No way the pilot could know and it was totally a 'ships are female' thing, but it's now my head-canon so therefore I will always believe it
Vader was a total boss in both scenes. His choking pun was brilliant (and loved that he had a residence on Mustafar, the only planet they didn't give an on-screen title too) and his corridor scene was brutal. I immediately thought of the crew card art. Also compared to finally seeing Yoda in action and it being silly, I felt they were rather restrained with Vader. No silly moves or flips, just sheer brutal power, mainly just with the force. Put everything Anakin did in the prequels to shame. THAT is the scary Vader we've always wanted.
VERY few things disappointed, and only small things. Tie Strikers got less screen time than I thought they would, and when Jyn is called out for using a fake name, I felt the fake name should have been Jan Ors just to give us nerds a shout-out (not that we didn't get enough anyway lol)
All in all, I have never fist-pumped and had such an outward reaction to a film before. I was literally buzzing.
The Vader pun was brilliant, confirmed that he has a definite grip on language, and it certainly held the audience's attention. His presence at the end was perfect. That scene was one of the most intense things I've ever seen in cinema.
For X-Wing, I really hope we see Blue Leader (anyone know his name?) as a new pilot, along with an X-Wing fix. I actually loved the air/space combat scenes, except the Star Destroyers were not as scary as they should have been.

General Merrick. Yeah he was ace, hope we get him at some point. X/Y-wing aces can't come soon enough!
I think more than ever it's likely that SWX58 is new X-Wing pilots. Maybe the delay is created by changes in the movie - the partisan X-Wing was basically written out entirely so maybe they're reskinning the model & pilots that would originally have been partisan to match blue squadron?
Edited by Stay On The LeaderNow I'm not sure General Syndulla is Hera.
Isn't she a naval captain now? It would make more sense, considering her position, than army captain, which is quite a few steps lower (naval captain would be army colonel). And if she's in a naval rank "path", she would become an admiral not a general.
(EDIT Polish subtitles and I've heard that also the dubbing (not sure, watched with subtitles) refer to General Syndulla in masculine gender, but that might be a mistranslation, English doesn't have gendered verbs and if translator didn't have enough context he... they would default to masculine)
Edited by eMeMSeeing as one of the story credits on the film and writer of Rebels episodes (Gary Whitta) said beforehand to watch and LISTEN for Rebels easter eggs, 99.999999% sure it's a Hera reference. Same with the VCX.

Wasn't Lando made a General just before Endor, where he was most definitely leading ships?

Don't try to make the Star Wars ranking system make sense. It never ends well.

I guess
I don't think there's ever really been a clear indication of what the various ranks mean in Star Wars. Naval ranks most often seem to apply only to the commanders and crew of capital ships. The Ghost wouldn't really apply. And Hera has been a part of a Rebel cell, which is a "ground" unit, not a space one. Traveling through space is just a requirement for an inter-galactic rebellion to function.
I'm fairly certain the reference would be to her. But, again, it's more of a "nod" or an "Easter egg" than anything else, as opposed to a canonical appearance. The same as the Ghost showing up in the battle, but never being named. The names and the ship don't mean anything to the casual viewer, but the fans get to be like "Oooh! Look!" and then fill in the gaps with their imagination. And, at the same time, obviously it means those characters aren't canonically tied to the film's events, meaning the Rebels show can continue to do with them what they please.
