The CGI faces were groundbreaking. Leia, Tarkin, all the pilots from episode 4. Simply amazing. The uncanny valley was at its all time best in modern cinema. Anyone who calls the CGI bad has expectations that are beyond comprehension. This was Jurrasic Park 1993 groundbreaking. I can't wait to see this technology in 5 years.

The difference is no one has ever seen a dinosaur, so no one knows how would would move or what the texture would be. Human faces are something we're incredibly sensitive to, and the fact is that even if we thought the CGI was good, then it was bad. It should have been SO good, that it was unnoticeable. It should have been totally seamless.

And if they can't make it totally seamless, then they need to think of an alternative way to represent that character on the screen.

You're asking for miracles here, dude.

You've gotta break ground somewhere .

We know Hera Syndulla is in it right before they leave to scarif over the speakers of the base we hear general hera syndulla report to the control room

Well, there is another Syndulla involved with the Rebellion.

Come on. Cham is not a General who has any reason to be at Yavin IV.

I wholeheartedly disagree 1000%. If we thought it was good, it was bad? That makes absolutely no sense. Not much of a fact. Because I thought it was good. And that's.... Good. When you make the next Star Wars film, make sure to let us know how good your CGI skills are. Or if you used an alternative way. Tron Legacy, that was off. The Mummy 2. That was hideous. Rogue One was incredible.

I love that the exhaust port weakness was something that was intentionally introduced, rather than just something the Rebels happened to find. That makes WAY more sense than the way it was before. And it makes sense that the Imperials themselves didn't find it because it was hidden, the plans that were stolen were, like, the only completely plans, and the guy in charge of building the thing died before he could look over what Urso did.

Erso designed the main reactor so that it would destroy the station in case of detonation inside, but there is no evidence that he had anything to do with the exhaust port.

It wasn't outright stated, but it's a pretty reasonable assumption. Creating a deadly weakness is useless if it's in the middle if a giant impenetrable battle station.

The exhaust port is part of the reactor system, I have no problem assuming he designed the port as well.

You're asking for miracles here, dude.

I take the alternative approach that if it's not perfect then it doesn't make it to the final product. They should have looked at Tarkin (and Leia to a lesser extent) and said "Yeah it's good, but it's not good enough. Lets use him mostly through holograms"

And in ten years or so when the technology has improved then they can look at adding entirely CGI faces.

I've got to say, it's only a minor quibble. The film was fantastic and Tarkin as a character was brilliant, I just can't agree with anyone who says the CGI was good enough or that it was seamless. It wasn't, it was obvious and jarring.

If we thought it was good, it was bad? That makes absolutely no sense.

If you thought it was good, that meant you noticed it. If you noticed it, then it wasn't seamless. If it wasn't seamless, then it was bad.

Therefore, if you thought it was good, it was actually bad.

Great movie. MUCH beter than TFA which is my least favorite star wars film (see my sig). Not sure where I'd rank it overall yet as I like all the movies pretty equally for the most part. It would proabably be in my top half at least though. Will know more on further viewings.

Loved how there were references to all areas of the saga. OT/PT/Clone Wars/Rebels, it was all there. I only wish they had use title cards for Mustafar and Coruscant as well.

Probably the best action of all the movies, especially for the space battle. Music is pretty weak though, part of that is not having Williams, and part of it is the fact it was a rush job. Kinda surprised how little he re-used existing themes, but I guess he did the same for Jurassic World (although I think that was a better score).

Really looking forward to see how Rebels ends and leads into rogue one/a new hope.

There's something wrong with your rankings. You've got the following symbols in there: I, II, III. Not sure what they're intended to represent?

If we thought it was good, it was bad? That makes absolutely no sense.

If you thought it was good, that meant you noticed it. If you noticed it, then it wasn't seamless. If it wasn't seamless, then it was bad.

Therefore, if you thought it was good, it was actually bad.

What about the people who only reconized it because they saw

Peter Cushing's 40 year younger twin brother and had a "waitaminute" moment?

Well, some people just have poor eyesight I guess. My wife isn't a Star Wars fan and immediately asked me why they'd made that guy CGI. She nodded when I explained the original actor had passed away, but the fact that he was CGI was instantly noticeable.

Oh, we get it. You're one of those. I hate this. I hate that. It's never good enough. Bleh

I thought it was perfect. So.... ? Noticing something doesn't make it not seamless. I know Cushing is dead and Fisher isn't 19. I have also been a fan of computer graphics my whole life. In between being in the Star Wars fan club in 1992 and being an absolute movie fanatic, I would write letters to ILM at age 12, asking silly questions about the future of cgi and how to become a part of it. I'm sorry you have so much dislike for furthering computer graphics, and also Star Wars in general. Me? I love Star Wars. Hope one day you find something to enjoy. Cheers

One of my nitpicks is jumping to hyperspace basically right from the surface of the planet. It already bothered my when Han jumped to hyperspace from INSIDE a hanger in TFA. This was even worse.

On a side note, with all the characters in this movie basically dying, I'm curious if any of them are going to get appearances in Rebels, just to give them some more screen time.

Replying to the right post? I don't see a I, II, III in there anywhere. I'm thinking we can guess OT=original trilogy, PT=prequel trilogy.

I'm thinking it would be much safe to jump to hyperspace too close to something than it would be to arrive too close to somewhere. If a ship is mostly blind in hyperspace you probably have a better time avoiding things if know what's close when you close your eyes as opposed to opening them when you think you're close to something.

The effectiveness of CGI Tarkin and Leia may have depended greatly on where you saw the movie and in what format. I did a double take with Tarkin wondering where they found someone with such an uncanny resemblance. By the time Leia showed up I had an idea what could be expected although I was hoping they had recast the part to someone who looked the part. Am I the only one who wonders if Fisher's own daughter could have pulled of Leia instead of needing to go CGI?

I was sort of wondering the same. Obvious candidates include the Mon Cal Admiral Raddus - I could easily see the Jedi-sporting Lothal Cell being critical to bringing the Mon Calamari into the Rebel Alliance.

Others...less so. I mean, Saw Gerrera was obviously in the Clone Wars series, already, not to mention featuring several times in the canon novel "Catalyst", so...can't see any more time for him. Chirrut and Baze might have encountered the Lothal cell? But it could only have been a passing meeting?? Ditto Cassian - but we're starting to really reach, there.

(On the other hand - what the hell, the Lothal Rebels have already met Wedge, Leia, Lando, C-3PO and R2-D2, Maul, Thrawn, Vader, hell even Yoda , so...basically 'anything goes', here...)

I'll argue about Saw.

Saw had Partisan Xwings, though we mostly saw their wreckage, and the Rebels had Xwings as well. Which means Saw had to leave the Rebels AFTER the rebels aquire the Xwing, which is a story I expect Rebels to explore.

A lot of what we thought we knew about hyperspace is being changed by these new movies. Proximity to gravity wells doesn't appear to do squat any more.

Sorry I didn't like a thing you liked. No need to take it personally though.

Interesting point.

Certainly, the 'Rebels' showrunners have implied that acquiring the X-Wing will be a part of their series, and you are right - if Saw doesn't have X-Wings yet ...but by roughly '2 years from where we are now' he not only has them, but has them and has left the Rebellion ...

Yeah, I can see that as a solid case for him. Didn't even think about those ships.

I loved the Vader goes to town boarding scene.

Loved the movie. Haven't been on the forums awhile because I haven't been able to buy recent waves but came back here immediately to find fellow SW hardcore fans. Quick hits:

-Love the darker tone. Baze shooting that stormtrooper on the ground in the head as he starts to get up? I gasped. Anybody else catch that?

-Where was the Wedge call out? People keep mentioning it but I didn't catch it. Biggs and Porkins would've been neat too but probably a little much. Maybe over the radio? That'd be subtle. Got a kick out of Red 5 being killed, haha.

-Anybody else notice the poor man's dejarik game in the guerrilla holdout? It's the game from the Falcon R2 plays Chewie but with actual carved models instead of a holotable. Fit the atmosphere of poor guerillas and was a nice nod. I kinda want rules and a game released now!

-I thought a few of Saw's partisan X-wings were going to escape Jedah and be called in to help Rogue One's initial stand alone assault.

-Loved the Mon Cal ship where the admiral sits extended over the bubble so he can see a huge panorama of the battle. Nice touch.

-The exchange between Bail and Mon was perfectly clear to me. They discus his Jedi friend and then who Bail will send, two separate people and the pronouns fit.

-Found the CGI for Tarkin a little jarring and then was surprised they gave him extended scenes. A more subtle use of him would've been fine in my opinion. CGI Leia was okay because it was so short but just having her speak from behind would've worked too.

-Saw multiple instances of the "Ghost" and heard the Syndulla call out. Awesome.

-If the Ghost was there I'm kind of surprised the A-wings of Phoenix weren't. Has Phoenix squad finally run out of pilots? I can see not including them because otherwise why weren't they at Yavin 4 and therefore the DS battle. Just a curiosity but I'm fine with it. Officially RZ Interceptors (ie A-wings) were at the DS battle but off screen. Including them here would've been a neat way of retconning that more firmly.

-When Baze cradles Chirrut's body there were several troopers firing on Chirrut prior. But then he cradles him and they give him a 2 min reprieve to be sad? Are they reloading? Then Krennic's troopers suddenly miss a ton? It was a little off.

-Kinda weird the DS blasts created what looked like nuclear blasts. It was too contemporary and distracted me momentarily.

-Somebody earlier in the thread said this changes the tone of ANH a ton. I have to agree. Can't wait to watch them back to back.

-K2SO dies fighting off overwhelming stormtroopers but then, once he dies, they all disappear. Krennic comes down to the storage core, a hugely important area to the base and whole Empire, and all the troopers are gone?

-The Imperials seemed to have a massive TIE advantage. Feel like they should've swarmed more. Also sad we didn't see the Star Destroyers disgorging TIEs.

-Vader assault was glorious. I can't wait until it's on youtube to watch as a single clip over and over.

-Just great. Great. Loved it.

There was no Wedge call out. You hear Bail Organa start a conversation with "Captain Antilles..." after finishing talking to Mon Mothma; but he's talking to Raymus Antillies, captain of the Tantive IV.
