Tarkin jarred me slightly in the first moment - but the voice sold me later on, and the CGI became less noticeable.
The problem was that in every scene with Tarkin in it, I was too busy evaluating the CGI to actually be invested in the scene itself.

I saw it in 2D (thankfully. 3D is such a tired gimmick for me). He looks like CGI. But it's not so awful that it was jarring. Given how many movies are using fully CGI characters these days, it kinda surprises me that so many people are mentioning this. I mean, Rocket Racoon didn't look like a real racoon, lol. Hulk doesn't look real in Avengers. The purpose of visual effects are to assist your imagination, not to fully supplant our reality... yet.
Ya'all Emmer effers need Jesus. This was the CGI when I was a kid.
I just saw it in 2d. I actually thought Tarkin and Leia looked fine. its the same technique they used in one of the terminator films to have a 'young arnie' as a T800 and i think ten years on they did a much better job of it.
I loved all the nods to the OT, 'watch yourself!', red leader, using blue squadron (red squadron was supposed to be blue in epIV but the special effects at the time made blue difficult so they swapped it to red), the yavin base, all of it pure gold.
The OP summed it up for me.. the movie i've wanted to see since 1983. Much better than TFA, inifinitaly better than all the best bits of the prequels put together.
A brave movie in some ways to make bold plays with characters fates.
As for K not being a pilot.
Its *highly* likely that when FFG were given the OK to do R1 models they saw little of the film and the plot.
When i worked on lord of the rings for Games Workshop we were only seen stills of a lot of the stuff and some stuff was kept secret until very late and even when we did see it it was too late to do much with it for the toy/mini release for that film. For example we did a balrog for fellowship and they were *really* funny at newline about anyone seeing that and the penalty for leaking pics was ridiculous (like *personal* financial penalites that would cripple you for life).
So they probably worked on what they had... in much the same way that we got no named pilots other than Poe for TFA core set.
All in all a cracking film.. i missed the classic score but for me the film is upthere with ESB and EPIV
I think the problem is that something like Groot or the Hulk is entirely fictional, we've never seen a real one so we only sort of have an impression of what it would look like.
A human face, and those tiny, subtle yet super important changes in expression are something we're exposed to constantly and are incredibly sensitive to. So when we're presented with a fake one, it's immediately obvious, and the reason it was so jarring was because in each scene that featured Tarkin I was thinking to myself "Ok, yeah, it's not TOO bad. I guess. I mean, it's not glaringly obvious that it's CGI. Maybe if I'd never seen ANH I wouldn't notice. I dunno. Oh hell, what did they just say? What happened? Oh they're blowing something up with the Death Star, cool..."
It took me right out of the movie and made me evaluate the CGI, instead of just enjoying the scene and being immersed in the movie.

That..is why you fail
Oh and the four wing cargo shuttle... my name for them at the moment is 'turtles' they remind me of the four flippers of a turtle

I had a similar problem but it wasnt with the CGI... what kept pulling me out of the movie was 'nerd spotting' the costume props and blasters.
I work in re-enactment magazines so i kept seeing stuff that would look 'star wars' to most people but i know is a russian gorka mountain suit.. or a vietnam M1 helmet.. or a sten gun bandolier from WWII... Andors blaster pistol was a stripped down M4.
I wish i could watch films and *not* see stuff like that but i cant because i spend everyday around that sort of militaria

Well, that's a problem with the the original trilogy too...
I think its harder to spot in the original trilogy because it was *very* obscure stuff at the time that now we have the internet we know what a lot of it is.
Like concussion rifles are lewis guns with no magazine, E11s are sterling SMGs.. tusken raiders have ww1 swedish ammo bandoliers etc. I think back in the 80s no one noticed unless you were a total gun nut but now its more visible as you can see stills from films a lot easier, zoom in on them etc.
Also apart from the sterlings.. most the stuff lucas used was WWi or WWII era stuff (hand Dl44 being a broomhandle mauser.. rebel commando assault rifles being STG44s etc). For me using modern gorka suits was an odd choice as you see them in the news... likewise the M1 helmet is an *iconic* shape from the vietnam war and WWII so stood out a little too much.
But then again, like i say its my job so i probably see stuff no one else does.
What occurred to me, though... di d anyone else notice just how many shots from the trailer are not in the film?

Two words:
Director's
Cut
(Granted, it would be without precedent. No Star Wars movie has had an 'extended edition' release...I think we'd all agree that the George Lucas "remasters" don't count. And I don't think the composer for this one - Michael Giacchino - has ever come back to the studio to rescore a film for an extended version, either. Still...one can hope...)
Some of the best Star Wars scenes to date in this movie.
Enjoyed the overall darker, more realistic tone and story. Was almost worth it just to see Vader do his thing. I thought the acting was very good all things considered. I was fine with the CGI, although I didn't think it was really necessary. Barrel rolling x wings.
Seemed a little cut up, especially in the beginning. Went overboard with the blind quasi Jedi guy and the crazy powerful blaster gun his friend had. Didn't understand the Tantive escaping the battle, or why they had it docked that whole time in the first place.
So, it was legit, but I wonder at all the obvious deleted scenes and dialogue. You could feel it in the first half of the movie.
What I REALLY liked was that I didn't hear a Wilhelm scream. There was a slightly girly squeal from one dying stormtrooper, but it wasn't the Wilhelm.
Thank the ****ing maker.
Just saw it. It was awesome!
Oh my god it was great. Loved everything about it. If you love Star Wars at all you will love Rogue 1.
Loved it. Just wow!
that space battle..... holy cow! I"m just blown away.
Also, as far as X-wing is concerned: who the heck is Heff Tobber and why isn't the 3rd U-Wing pilot K2-SO?
Looking on IMDB, I saw that Blue 8 is played by someone named Toby Hefferman. Maybe that's where the name comes from?

This movie was fantastic! Holy crap! I have very, very, very few criticisms. Faaaaar less than I had for TFA, but those were few at first too.
Biggest thing though?
Holy s**t we saw Snoke.
I thought it was spectacular.
The first half had some rough edges, the music and the spastic pacing in particular, but the final stretch was exhilarating. I appreciate that they're mixing up the tone and trying out different stories - it gives me hope for the Han Solo movie.
I am taking my kids Saturday am a little disappointed they killed everyone. They are a bunch of ground fighters it just seemed unnecessary. Plus are kids really going to want to go run out and buy the toys if the characters are all dead? There are no more adventures to be had they are all dead.
As a Star Wars fan I really liked the movie as a father of a 7 and 10 year old I was hoping for more of a family movie. But it's not a Star Wars movie it's a Star Wars story.
I may have missed it... where was Snoke?
Tarkin and Leia taking a walk through the uncanny valley.
General Syndulla - Hera or Cham?
Darth Vader, Bail Organa, Red and Gold Squads.. so many moments of squee.
To sum up the movie in two words: Pyrrhic Victory.
As to the action figure with dead characters, I had an Jabba figure. He died. Darth Vader too. Obi-wan, check. Boba Fett - yep, he died. I remember playing with all these figures.

Uhhh you mean Vader in a Bacta tank in his Mustafar castle?
I think some people might be confusing the messed up vader in a bacta tank before he puts his suit on with snoke
When I first saw Tarkin I was saying to myself "where did they find the original actors much younger twin?" Quickly put together that it was CGI but he still belonged in the movie.
I was certainly a bit disappointed with how things ended as I don't think the Tantive IV should have been in the battle.
Who are the other call outs to characters from Episode IV and others?
General Dodonna
I feel I should recognize a bunch of the characters in that briefing meeting before the launch of that last mission.
Definitely no sequals to Rogue One.
Edited by StevenOI think some people might be confusing the messed up vader in a bacta tank before he puts his suit on with snoke
He could also be referring to Vader's servant.

No. I mean that imp of a man that knelt before him.
I'll join in the love train for Rogue One. It hit so many things dead on that my problems with the film seem trivial by comparison. An excellent Star Wars Story.
I would have given anything for there to have been a kyle and Jan reference. They should have put the hwk-290 in by the ghost.
