For those that have seen it, is it suitable to take my 8-year-old? Is there anything that a parent might object to (profanity, etc)?

I kind of assume they're going by the same guidelines as the rest of the franchise, but since this is a bit of a new venture I just want to make sure. Thanks for any input provided!

When I was watching Rogue One I absolutely missed the old score. Right when you know the Imperial March would kick in there something that's almost the Imperial March instead, just enough to remind you what it should really have been.

But I know why they did it. I imagine they sat in the room and said "so are we going to use the original score for every Star Wars film we ever make, or are we going to draw a line and keep that score for the main Skywalker Saga?" (as I believe they're calling it). I think they made the right choice in the long run to open it up to new music in future films, but for sure the first few times you hear something that's not John Williams it's a niggling problem.

I have to say, I felt that way with TFA - I only identified it afterwards but it felt like something was missing for me, and it was the score. Given how powerful and textural his music was within the saga, TFA felt like a weak outing. I haven't seen Rogue One yet but some of the music in the trailers has been awesome - as you said, it's got shades of the original but it's got it's own vibe too. Not sure if the commercials are representative of the movie, but I'll find out soon enough

Kevin Smith is a giant suck up he praised the prequels and batman vs superman, I like his films I don't trust his reviews.

Just to say, he actually completely destroyed BvS when he saw it.

Just throwing this out there: the film is rated PG-13; The Force Awakens was also rated PG-13. I haven't seen Rogue One yet but a relatively safe bet taking your kids to Rogue One if they saw TFA*.

*(assuming equally rated movies are generally equal in appropriate content, which is not always the case)

It's just darker and a bit more adult in tone. If you think they could sit through Empire Strikes Back without being bored & restless then they'll make it through Rogue One.

I'm still not sure why TFA got pg-13.

Either guidelines have changed or Disney preferred the rating since it's more "cool". It wasn't that dark a movie. It did have a bit of blood but nothing super graphic.

I'd say ROTS is the only one that deserved it for the dark tone but mainly because of the immolation scene. AOTC might be next most deserving because of all the lightsaber maiming (multiple decapitations and limb removals) in it.

It sounds like the pg-13 for rogue one might be warranted though.

I've just seen Rogue 1 (and went in my tie pilot outfit) .

A very 'brave' star wars movie IMO that took risks you dont normally get.

I loved it and its certainly deserves to be side by side with the OT... hands down better than the best bits of all three prequels put together and certainly more interesting and original than TFA.. TFA was a nice reboot.. R1 actually goes back to what 'star wars' is to me.. stormtroopers , tie fighters, xwings, y wings etc.

Loved the excellent way CGI was used well to patch a 30 year gap

I too missed the Williams score, the new one 'hinted' at the score for ep IV but didnt quite hit the emotive spot.

Some excellent 'backstory' cameos and references that tie in nicely with EPIII and also EPIV

Nice to see the original rebel squadron get there place too.

I was worried U wings and Tie Strikers would replace the ships you'd expect to see in that era (ie Tie LN, Toe bomber, Xwing, Y wing) but they dont... that made it for me too.

Its the darkest movie by far. I would honestly say its iffy for kids under 10. This movie actually earns its PG-13 rating while TFA really could have been PG.

It is a pretty dark story. Some scenes were pretty intense and I could see how it might be

upsetting to younger viewers which I believe is why it got the PG-13 rating. (Same for TFA).

I thought it was fine for my 8-year-old son though.

I frikkin' loved it. I missed Williams music but Giacchino did a good jb of keeping the feel of Star Wars without just trying to be John Williams. The newer ship designs were nice (although ihave had at least 2 of them on my computer for a couple of years *L*) and the tone of the film struck a chord with me. Seeing Y Wings do what they re supposed to do (at least since it was decided that they were bombers) made my day and i was very happy to see so much of the Corellian Corvette. Ive been going through a creative blank period and this film has rekindled things. And while im not much od a fan of Rebels i did like the look of the Hammerhead corvette.But then again that was around before the Rebels show anyway. I liked the characters as well.

OK....I saw it today. A few hours ago.

I'll start by saying what my opinion of what Ep 7 was. That movie was....OK. It will probably be a better movie once we get all the backstory to everything all into it. I felt like I was thrown into the action without really knowing anything and the pacing of the movie never let me rest. It was go go go go go go go...done. I liked it.....but it wasn't a great movie. It needed to just not suck. It did that.

Now...for Rogue One....I LOVED IT!!!!! I think it might be the best Star Wars movie of all time. I really liked it. I thought it was fantastic. It lived up to the hype for me 100%.

Some say that the pacing in the beginning was too slow, but personally, I wish Ep 7 had taken this level of pacing and I would've been happier with it. I didn't think it was too slow at all.

The movie had great dramatic moments and really good speeches. I really loved it. There were star fighter scenes and ground combat and all sorts of stuff. I loved all the old actors that were CGI'ed into the movie.

To me star wars has been split into two groups: The Trilogy and the Saga. The Trilogy is the original trilogy (duh.) and the saga is all the movies: eps I to VII and, why not, the ewok movies. I had to do this because the prequals and the "special" editions where ruining the Original movies for me. Suffice to say:

I vastly prefer the Trilogy over the Saga.

Now where does Rogue One fit in?

Let me put it this way:

Star wars is now a Quadrology.

They did right by the Original trilogy! Rogue one deserves to stand amongst them.

Man I loved they got the original phrase of "may the force (of the others) be with you." wich seriously made me geek out.

More importantly: It explains why the ultimate weapon of mass destruction could be taken out by two shots from a single fighter piloted by a farmboy.

And best of all: It fixes what episode III ruined. It makes Vader scary again!

It is ranking very near the top for me for the reasons others have stated. I have wanted a major non-Jedi Star Wars story for such a long time, though. You see how the Rebellion is actually fought when space wizards aren't around.

As far as taking small kids, the main issue I would have is that Cassian's intro scene has him murdering his own man so he doesn't fall into Imperial hands. While it is darker in general tone than other Star Wars movies, the characters themselves are considerably darker.

i have seen it and that is way too spoiler-y for someone that hasn't. If someone reads this and sees the movie, you have basically spoiled the surprise and impact of that scene. IMHO, you should edit your post.

I liked it way more than I had hoped. Pacing was ridiculous at the start but evened out. Only one part made me mad and it only conflicted with the OT once in my eyes.
