Two different lists for Ties

By BowTieSwarm, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Ok so the following are two different 100 point lists the first is the one i'm currently using (to be honest i've been away since about wave 3 and only now just returning).

So my classic list that i've now taken to two tournaments. The first tournament was when x-wing was just taking off and the second tournament was only this past weekend. First tournament I came 4th this last tournament i came dead last.

Classic list
Vader with Swarm Tactics
Tie Academy Pilot
Tie Academy Pilot

Turr Phennir with squad leader
Alpha Squadron Tie Interceptor

= 100 points and five ships
Mostly does alright but usually by end game i'm chewed to hell. This last tournament the list went up again two k-wings and won, and manage to get down to a Vader vs Poe dogfight. But i just find with some many level one pilots they get minced before having a chance to get there shots off if Vader is taken out.

The list i'm now toying with is

Vader with Swarm tactics and cluster missiles
Tie Academy Pilot
Tie Academy Pilot

Turr Phennir
Dark Curse

=100 points with five ships

I dropped the second Interceptor and added Curse as he has a higher piloting skill. Then took off Turr's squad leader as i found i was rarely using it. The extra points I purchased the cluster missiles for Vader. I am hoping that when I play if I can get vader his target lock and focus actions then pair him up with another tie using swarm tactics he can quickly whittle down atleast one enemy ship in a good round. Dark Curse whilst not as agile as Turr makes for another great random hunter on the board and his ability to avoid re-rolls and focus tokens sounds interesting. The list is also dictated by the resources I have. Currently looking at getting the imperial aces expansion.

All feedback appreciated

Do you have the TIEx1 title? I'd imagine you probably don't, as that title is almost an auto add to Vader. If you are planning on flying Vader for a while, I would highly encourage you to get the title. Vader really likes Engine Upgrade too, but then again, he likes that when he's not flying with wingmen. Vader really doesn't need missiles if he has the title and Advanced Targeting Computer.

Right now the biggest thing I see is that you are heavily flying dependent. You have one 3 die attack in a squad of 5, and the TIE fighters don't get the ability to heavily modify their 2 die attacks. You really are wanting for Howlrunner or Youngster Rage in that squad to help with those 2 die attacks.

If you do get Imperial Aces, I'd suggest bumping to Soontir Fel with his standard load out (PTL, title, Stealth, autothrusters). You'll probably have to drop a TIE in order to do that though.

Yeah I've heard of that Tiex1 title i'm trying to secure one of the cards for the list. Generally what I do which sounds insane is that with his two wingmen is use one to run forward and bump block the enemy then team the other Tie up with Vader to target whatever enemy gets blocked.

I am gunna get that tie expansion and the Imperial aces expansion set. At this point I don't want to give up on Ties. I was the only player even using them in the tournament. I don't want to just jump straight to First Order Ties, even if they are awesome. I must say facing the mostly B-Wing list in the last round was super painful. I did notice that player was happy to see it wasn't soontir he was up against. You are definitely correct it's flying i rely upon in my games. For example when facing the dual K-wings i'd gotten rid of one and was chasing another past an asteroid. My opponent dropped cluster mines. So it was like Asteroid with cluster mines along side it. I managed the do a hard right 1 turn missing the whole lot then boosted with the Interceptor placing it now range one on the K-wing's side. I love this kind of Tie movement.

I am happy to ditch another tie academy if it means playing with points to get another higher level pilot. I found the problem I had was that really the enemy was focus on my higher skilled pilots and then if they went well they dictated the combat. Most opponents had only two or three ships (except the B-wing list which was pretty large)

Thanks for the feedback i appreciate the help.

Assuming you get those expansions, here's what I would suggest:

Darth Vader — TIE Advanced 29
Advanced Targeting Computer 1
Engine Upgrade 4
TIE/x1 0
Ship Total: 34
Soontir Fel — TIE Interceptor 27
Push the Limit 3
Stealth Device 3
Autothrusters 2
Royal Guard TIE 0
Ship Total: 35
Black Squadron Pilot — TIE Fighter 14
Rage 1
Ship Total: 15
Black Squadron Pilot — TIE Fighter 14
Rage 1
Ship Total: 15
Leaves one point and the EPT on Vader open. I like Vet Instincts, but you could go for something else like Trick Shot or Score to Settle (when it comes in) to keep a 1 point bid for Soontir. You could swap a bit different TIE/I though to save points:
Turr Phennir — TIE Interceptor 25
Veteran Instincts 1
Stealth Device 3
Autothrusters 2
Royal Guard TIE 0
Ship Total: 31
So he gets PS9, and he gets to reposition after he fires anyway, which messes up other player's initiative thoughts. If they have PS9 and take initiative, then they move before Turr and you can react accordingly. If they defer initiative, you shoot first, and can reposition accordingly. It's a bit of a pain to face, and still gets two actions a turn, and is 4 points cheaper. With that you can put Predator on Vader to help with his attacks, or Lone Wolf if you want to try flying him away from the pack.
Angry TIEs are usually better in a swarm, but if the opponent is having to worry about Vader and whichever TIE/I you are flying, chances are they will ignore the small TIEs until they are hulking up and flying into R1 of the his ships. They may do some good unexpected damage, or they may blow up in a fiery ball of anger, but either way it should be spectacular.
I hope you get to fly the list, it sure seems like fun to see some TIE fighters back on the table.

Your first list was my early wave 2 list of choice for a long time. Vader handing out actions to interceptors was crazy fun. Tried to reboot it when advanced got buffed but interceptors not named Fel fell out of favor pretty hard by then and Vader costs 5 more with EU and AdvTC so it's hard to keep 5 ships.

Soon I think Vader + Duchess + ties could be fun. Two PS 9/10 pilots with support sounds fun.

I love flying Ties and my last opponent in the tournament was quite pleased to see a 'classic' list and when he said it I was kinda sad to thinking that such an iconic ship was being driven out of the competition as I feel they are such great fun.

Cheers for the list suggestions I am going to give then a run soon. I have a couple mates and we're starting some at home round robin style tournament play to practice. So I will get a chance to try it out.

Good to see that other people used the list I used. I really fell in love with this list when I originally made it because in wave two days when I was first playing it had such a good variety of ships that it handled things nicely. Letting those two interceptors fly fast down one edge of the board to swing in behind the opponent's ships was so satisfying. I am not giving up on the humble ties just yet. I'm always going to fly imperials.

With the purchase of "Imperial Aces" you get beautiful toys for the Interceptors, plus a red interceptor (which i'm not tired to repeat, are faster :P )

Also you get Carnor Jax

Which is a useful ship in this tokened era of X-wing.

Push the limit + Autothruster/Targeting Computer + (Hull Upgrade) = 31(34) pts.

With a Tur Phenirr at 31 points or a full kitted Soontir Fel (35 pts) you still have a lot of points for TIE/lns

I love anything that robs the opponent of tricky tokens

Not exactly what I planned but I just ordered two Tie Defenders. Couldn't resist the pair together were 30 Australian Dollars AKA dollery doos

  • Depends how you're using him.
  • As a lone pilot for a one-on-one fight, he's great. In a squad.....so so.
  • The problem is that his special ability makes him a disporportionately hard target for his cost but you have no way to force people to shoot at him .
  • If he could equip Draw Their Fire or similar, he'd be much more useful.
  • You can use him to generate an evade token to feed a swarm leader, but so can Night Beast and Chaser for less points.
