Upkeep is acceptable. For me it's just the lop sided value structure in stuff, which I guess is like One 👁️ Matt87 pointed out. You can accomplish alot mechanically with money and zero xp.
Living expenses?

They don't really try to buy new gear, exclusively don't drink at the bar to avoid paying a tab, etc. They have a decent sized ship-repair bill they have ignored for 3 sessions, meanwhile gaining plenty of obligation. All of this being said, I had to start taxing them. I tax them for food, transportation, repairs, charge entrance fees to certain Cantina and clubs, I count their ammo and rations. It is the only way to keep them from hoarding credits. I feel like this keeps them on their toes, gives them a real world feel, and gives them some small amount of responsibility.
What's the reason they're "hoarding" credits? It possible they're saving up for something big and expensive, such as a better ship.

They know the game. Like 2P51 said they just buy equipment. They already have some of the best equipment you can get, aside from some custom weapons and upgrades. They already have a VCX and haven't tried to upgrade it after they saw some prices. 5 grenades for around 250 credits? Sure thing.
They end up doing little jobs for obligation and I don't charge them for rent though. I am pro living expenses.

And when you do, remember that those prices are for unarmed and unarmored craft.
Looking at some of those prices and seeing "Price: Call for pricing/Leasing" makes me chuckle at how cheap ships are in this system. I'd never really thought about it, honestly. Maybe, that's a whole 'nother wrinkle I need to plan for in my upcoming EotE campaign I'm setting up... Thanks guys, y'all just gave me more work to do.
I can't even right now, FFG forums...

On the topic of ship prices being what they are, scaling for ship prices has been set in stone since West End Games published them a long time (a long time) ago. They can't really be touched since they were actually canonical data and not mere game mechanics.
If you want to get really weird, Star Wars d20 established the average income for an individual that focused on their work (level 3 with +2 from ability score) was 1800 credits a week or 94,628.57~ a year (2100 weekly and 110400 yearly if they took skill focus like NPCs not intended as throw away combat thugs typically did). That can safely be filed under game mechanics though.

Then again, modern jets are ludicrously expensive. I'd say the cost of an X-wing would be more in line with the cost of a P-40 rather than the cost of a F-35. Also, the galaxy has recently seen a major intergalactic war followed by the monolithic superpower actually expanding its' navy on top of modernizing it. Assuming that this would lead to local planetary governments and secondary powers also arming up, there should be a ludicrous amount of ships on the market from failed bids and older models being surplussed.

That'd still be about $630,000 in adjusted dollars... And a jet like the F-86 is $2.3M.
Two big mistakes in RPG gaming is thinking their economies make any sense at all, and that how much an apartment costs matters.

Coincidentally, if you adjust it to 1977 dollars, it's more like 150k.
But, specifics aside, my point is that spaceships probably should be a lot cheaper than we think. Considering that FFG removed the used prices that WEG routinely used (25K for an YT-1300 IIRC) this edition still bumped the costs a lot.

I respect this take on the subject even though I don't always utilize that approach. The idea of a base price for stuff across the millions of worlds and governments/economies is ludicrous. It's just in the books to make it easy to do equipment. The price would be dependent on supply and demand, legality, etc.
A yt-1300 should be compared to a tractor trailer/big rig truck with a hitch or a motor home/rv, not a plane. Big difference in tech level, so common tech costs a lot less. Basis of comparison should be consumables (e.g. food) because supply/demand is comparable to real world (everyone organic needs to eat).
