Community Vote: Imperial Assault After Battle for Endor

By robertpolson, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

FFG in general seems against releasing items which can't stand alone with just the base game. So I doubt a product that uses all the expansions at once would ever be made.

They will support the movies first, the cartoon second and only after exhausting all that content go to books/comics.

With that said, Rogue One is perfect after Endor, however Rogue one would be long gone but EP8 will be right there. So I would expect them to support EP7/8 next.

I do hope that they hit Rogue one before moving on to EP7 though. It would be perfect with all the current content timelines and there is the DVD sales. Maybe Endor in the spring, Rogue one in the summer and EP7 in the winter.

+1 for Rogue One. It makes a lot of sense to release it before Episode 7 and onward.

Kyle Katarn, Dash Rendar, etc... need I say more? The expanded universe was one of the greatest things to happen to the origional series. It added layers and awesome characters.

FFG, please give us a dark forces beardless gunslinger Kyle Katarn!!! Oh and a Dash Rendar!

Destroying the deathstar in movie 4 and keeping luke alive between movies 5 and 6 would not have been possible without them.

Maybe we could get some other great villas like Vaders apprentice (force unleashed)?

I really hope they don't go the route of the new flicks yet.

Considering the new films and such are hot items with high public interest i feel it is pretty safe to say that FFG will be pulling from them. So I expect after Endor we will end up seeing either a Rogue One or Rebels box. I'd say Rebels but they may try to put the Rogue One stuff out first since it will have been 'newer' while Rebels has more of an established fan base which if they are interested in the game will buy it when they eventually see it.

On the 'major' EU characters - Kyle, Dash, Mara etc, I wouldn't really be expecting FFG to put them in these kind of games on their own back. But that doesn't mean that they'll be gone forever - it just means they'll be introduced in a way that fits into the overall universe. These characters have fans and a lot of story potential- it's silly to just drop them completely.

It'd be much more worthwhile to reinvent them and reintroduce them, even if they aren't neccasarily the exact same characters as they were previously - see Thrawn being introduced in Rebels. But I don't think they are likely to come in something like Imperial Assault, not when they could be introduced in movies or other major media first. FFG can then use them following the 'new canon'.

I say Rebels comes first just because whatever they've been working on over the last year is what we'll get, so Endor if you guys think so in the spring, and then Rebels related in the fall/summer and then Rogue I stuff.

It's an interesting idea. So far we've followed the OT pretty closely, but a minicampaign set alongside R1 would be a smart choice, particularly just a few months following the film's release (looks like it's a pretty popular film, and it'd be great for IA). Plus, though I don't think we need a Big Box for Endor, many people do, and that would allow Endor to be next winter's big box. It's certainly an interesting idea.

I don't see why the EU wouldn't make it in. Katarn, rendar, jade, etc are all in the card game. The lcg game is about the origional series, same as imperial assault.

They've already gone down that road. Ad for the new movies, there are more fans of the origional series and stories surrounding it, including the eu.

Yeah, they are doing Rogue one after endor. Just too good and perfect for this game not to do. The question is, will they just make up BS heroes and have the movie characters as side characters?

I'd like a tusk cat plus the rogue one characters, all useful for Edge as well.

I prefer movie characters to made up heros. Then you really relive the stories while playing. I still want the expanded universe characters from the rebellion era. However, rogue one is a great flick and matches the origional trilogy well.

It would be a good addition to ia.

Not me, I prefer not to relive the movie characters. I'm an old school gamer who likes to invent my own characters.

Kyle Katarn has likely been relegated to the dustbin of history. I was really surprised to see Thrawn make an appearence in Rebels. I'm holding out hope for Mara Jade to at least have been Luke's dead wife or soemething that allows her to be cannon, but I don't know. However, Kyle Katarn's whole story seems to be split between Jyn and Finn. It was Kyle Katarn who stole the death star plans, so now that has been taken from the character.

Yeah, Kyle was from a video game over two decades ago. He isn't cannon and has been fully replaced. I would say Kyle more was replaced by Kanan (at least post DF Kyle) and Jan Ors was replaced by Jyn Erso.

In short, Kyle is gone for good, fully replaced.

I can see Mara Jade coming back in some form since she was so popular, but not sure how that gets handled out side books or comics. Maybe after Rebels is done, they'll do a post Jedi cartoon with the main characters and she can find her way in that.

I want to see all the cool non-movie characters that we've grown to love, like Thrawn, Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade, Talon Karrde, etc. There is a rich and deep universe to draw from there. Not all of it is good (please no Yuuzhan Vong!) but there are some real gems too.

I'm glad that Thrawn is now in Rebels, which makes him "legal" (ie, canon) and therefore an option, for FFG's purposes. I'd like to see Mara Jade find her way into Rebels (or perhaps Episodes 8-9?), but we'll have to see.

And yeah, I can hear why people don't like Episodes 1-3. As movies they're not great [...well, I liked a number of things about Revenge of the Sith, even though there were some eye-rolling moments there too]. However, having said that, I think there are some pretty cool characters to work with there. We've already got the Nexu (Episode 2), and I haven't heard anyone complain about that. Likewise we've got HK Assassin Droids (from the KOTOR era!). So yeah, I'd personally be happy to get a Count Dooku, Mace Windu, Shaak Ti, General Grievous, Darth Maul and Captain Rex (both in Rebels anyway), etc. Those are memorable or cool characters, even given the sub-par quality of the movies where they show up. But please...no JarJar! lol I think that perhaps the best way to add some of these characters might be via the stand-alone Ally/Villain packs (ie, like Obiwan/Greedo/Inquisitor), rather than via boxed expansions.

There are also the planets and species/creatures from the Force Unleashed games. Felucia, Raxus Prime, etc...there's some cool stuff to work with there.

Beyond that, I'd say that we've still got plenty of material to work with from the new movies coming in the next few years. Rogue One itself would make for a good large box expansion.

I'm hoping Mara Jade will show up at some point in the new canon as well, though I think if they do anything with her she will probably not end up as Luke's wife, rather she would most likely keep her role before that bit so an Imperial agent kind of role and maybe a switch over to being a smuggler after the fact. So she could show up in rebels trying to stop the rebels or to track their base or the like, or if they do make a series between 6 and 7 then she could be an Imperial who gave that life up to try and have a more normal one or she is simply lost after the emperor died.

I'm down for any characters from Rebels being added to the game, but as for Clone Wars characters unless they show up in a Rebellion era show or game or the like then they would be better off left for something else like a Clone Wars spin off game. I don't mind beasts, droids, and the like but it would be too silly to have characters who die in the clone wars in the game, that said if they do make a spin off game I know I'd end up buying tons of clone troopers just so I can paint them up as different legions.

Nah, Kyle and Dash aren't gone for good. FFG has released their cards for the very popular star wars lcg (two different cards each) recently... during the disney era. The lcg covers the rebellion era, just like imperial assault.

Not gone folks, unless you are saying ffg is not relevant. It appears some might have an agenda against eu characters, but ffg has shown they support them, produce them, and can make a good profit off them.

:)

I think the main argument is whether FFG will use them in anything 'story related', compared to things like the LCG or X-Wing, where it doesn't matter what is and isn't canon.

Imperial Assault, on the other hand, is at least somewhat meant to fit into the 'real story'. My feeling is that they won't be used until it's decided where they fit into the story by other products up the food chain, but that's purely a guess. I don't think anyone really knows where they sit.

I'm hoping for PT era material in 2017. Episodes 1-3 movie stuff with lots of Jedi, Clone Troopers, Seperatists, etc. No real CW cartoon stuff though. Not really as a second edition of the game, but maybe a branch off so it can feel complete and enclosed.

I'd also really like another version of some of the previously made characters that focus on their other strengths, like a General Solo with leadership stats and skills.

Kyle and Jan are in the LCG, x-wing and armada, but I don't know if they will show up in IA. I wish they would. They were great characters, even if they reinvented them. I do prefer the no-name or original characters or more generic figures in a game usually as my imagination has always easier to run away with something malleable, rather than the stories or characters already cemented in celluloid (digital now).

If you've ever played the games Kyle was in Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy as well as the original, there was a vast treasure trove of locales as well as characters to draw from. Jedi Reborn figures would give the Imperial side something to counter the Rebels, as would their dark troopers, swamp troopers, etc. There are several systems of planets that have been mentioned but rarely explored in the books, movies and even the games (look at the map of the Rebellion boardgame) that I would prefer to see over Tatooine (we've been there how many times?)

Obviously IA has already fudged canon a little by now with Wave 7, but I think it's pretty unlikely we'd get any named characters (unless it's like an older Rex or Ashoka). More units from that era would be really cool, though. I wouldn't mind some reprogrammed battle droids and droidekas for Mercs, maybe a Reek or even an Acklay.. A lot of these could be reflected in the Rebel heroes, too. We have enough smugglers and stuff, let's see some interesting things. I've thought that a Kaminoan Rebel hero could be really interesting. Maybe we could also get a Geonosian hero (somehow broken out of the hivemind mentality), an old clone (unless that's what Biv is supposed to be?) or a Naboo royal officer.

We need more urban environments with city maps and windows and stairs. Would be cool to throw grenades and snipe from high rise buildings.

Just before Imperial Assault was announced (!#!?!!#), I had invested a lot of effort and cash in re-skinning it's Doom ancestor as a home-brew 'Republic Commando' game for my school wargaming group. I created a pvc play mat of underground, interconnected rooms and corridors and set the commandos the task of working their way from one corner of the map (the lift) to the other (the objective), with the objective of assassinating a high-value Separatist target. The four commandos had to fight from room to corridor and corridor to room, with the 'dungeonmaster' using a card deck to randomly generate, place and operate opponents in each room as the commandos opened/blasted each new door. For figures, I used the old Wizards of the Coast 30mm line - Battledroids, SBDs, Trandos, Geonosians. The game was of course heavily based on the old PC game Republic Commando, so there were bacta infusers and weapons/ammo stashes placed across the map by the dungeonmaster, to encourage players not to take the straight path from A to B.

The appearance of Imperial Assault (which my school games group absolutely loves) stopped our playtesting dead, but the game was working out to be quite fun (equipping one's commando with custom kit loadouts, and choosing whether to breach a door, to open it and toss in a grenade, or simply to pile in with all guns blazing, based on limited intel of what was inside that room, was quite fun!). Since then, I've noticed that Level 7 Omega Protocol (which predated IA by a year) would have been pretty good material for a more-or-less immediate RC reskin. Hey, ho!!

Some day, I'd certainly like to see this kind of Republic Commando mission developed within IA.

For as much as I am not a fan of movies 1-3, I totally agree. I was going through my star wars minis last night and thought, boy it would be awesome to use the four republic commandos and captain rex. Some of my best swm battles were using the Republic commandos, captain rex, bacara, gree, some elite troopers, and some arc troopers.

This would also mean that we could get a Darth Maul then... and who doesn't like him?

Still prefer the eu for filling in the origional trilogy (rendar protecting luke, mara jade attacking luke, katarn doing missions for the rebels, destroying dark troopers which may have saved the rebels), but hope they do branch out someday to movies 1-3 (no gungans though...)

More skirmish characters for Imperials that are cheap and competitive; exactly what the other factions have but imperials don't.

To make the rule understanding simpler, i'll name another factions character thats an example of the role and rules that these new characters could have their rules balanced against.

1. Gideon = Grand Admiral Thrawn. Who can be a cross between Gideon and Jabba ruleswise.

2. Obiwan = Maul, Dooku, Ventris, a generic Inquisitor. Who cares, just a red lightsaber at 7 pts and under who actually rivals obi-wan. (NOTE: The grand inquisitor at 9 points with his white, minimum 1 block and no focusing characters is nowhere near equivalent to obiwan at 7 points.)

Please also don't give them what i have dubbed as "Somos Syndrome".

Somos Syndrome: To have sub-par surge abilities like +1dmg, Pierce 1 or other such +1 abilities. The greatest sufferers or Somos Syndrome actually are ridiculously expensive, particularly the syndrome's namesake "Kayn Somos".

Famous Suffers are Kayn Somos, Fenn Signus, Biv Bodhrik.
