Modified demo scenario thoughts

By TallGiraffe, in Star Wars: Armada

So I am going to show a friend the game and he has never done minis before and I want to give him a good time. I wanted to change that first scenario in the core set a little to make it a bit more interesting and would love thoughts on it along with others own idea for a first game scenario just to have some fun discussion.

Rebels will have:

Nebulon B Escort

CR-90a

CR-90b

4 X-wings

2 Y-Wings

Imperials will have:

Victory II class Star Destroyer

Raider I class corvette

6 TIE Fighters

Just small changes to put more stuff on the board without overwhelming my friend.

Each side needs a Commander!

Rebels: Mon Mothma / Imperial Navy: Screed

The only issue with the core set game is that a new player does not have a hope of even having a bit of fun against an experienced player unless the experienced player takes the imps and make it very clear to the new player he needs to drive his ships around the sides of the vsd. It will be a frustrating game for him otherwise.

Which is why I added more ships for both sides and the Y-wings for the Rebels to give them a better chance at cracking the Victory.

Ehhhh I think Tagge, Vader, or Motti is a better choice. Honestly I would change the commander for each faction based on who the newb is playing. Maybe Ackbar if he picks Rebels for fun factor. Though I want to keep it as simple as I can for now. Odds of us playing again are not going to be too high.

I totally agree, that it is frustrating to play an VSD in your first game. He's to lame. You won't be able to roll your six funny colored dice.

But with a bunch of CR-90s you will make weird maneuvers, bump into your own ships, exit the map and only shoot a single red die once in a while.

Maybe it's more fun to give him two gladiator or an ISD. :)

And: How much fun it is to play with an experienced player, depends on his friendliness... Yesterday I lost in two 200pt. games against two newbies! ;)

Or, the experienced player could just play in such a way as to give the new guy a fun game.

You don't always have to tactically smash your opponent on the table. I introduced someone new to Armada just two days ago, using the standard intro scenario.

Gave them the ISD and I drove the Nebula right into their front arc while racing around with the Corvette.

They blew me up, got a win, and had a blast!

From then on, they see how important it is that rebels avoid the front arc of Star Destroyers. And we have tactical discussions about maneuver and arcs and such.
