Prequel Ships in Armada

By PubliusClaudius, in Star Wars: Armada Off-Topic

I'm new to the forums so forgive me if this has been brought up before, but with the release of the ARC-170 in X-Wing I'm pretty excited for some potential prequel ships finding their way into Armada as well. If Fantasy Flight would throw in the Venator Class Star Destroyer along with some V-Wing and ARC-170 squadrons, they'd pretty much drain my bank account for the next FOREVER.

So what other prequel ships would people like to see here? Acclamator Cruisers? Banking Clan Frigates?

As a further aside, I think Droid Starfighters might make for some great swarm squadrons for a potential Scum and Villainy faction in the game. Yeah, I might be a bit obsessed with the late Empire at War rts.

Prequel ships may be released at some time in the future, but most likely as new factions. The reason is very simple: Unlike in a fighter vs fighter game, where you may encounter an antique starfighter refitted to modern standards, you won't find whole squadrons of them, and you definitely won't find outdated (and scrapped) capital ships. The only ship that may appear as a Rebel/Imperial ship is the Venator because it was kept in service.

By the way, would you add ARC-170s, Venators and Jedi Starfighters to the Rebels or the Imps?

Also don't forget that FFG pushes out a new wave for X-Wing almost every month, so they are tossing in everything that comes to their mind. There is no logic in it. Armada is very different.

Honestly, I think a decent arguement could be made to put Clone Wars era ships in any faction. Old Republic ships and squadrons could just as easily be "liberated" by desperate cash-strapped rebels as they could be pressed back into service by Outer Rim Imperial commanders though part of me would be more inclined to give the capital ships to the Empire and fighter squadrons to Rebels. The Empire really does seem to love their TIE variants though there are a few expanded universe examples of other types of fighters being used. Likewise, if both the X-Wing and Nebulon B Frigate could start out as Imperial designs that find their way into Rebel hands why not an old Venator or Acclamator as well?

Admittedly, I see former CIS ships most readily falling into the hands of pirates, crime lords, and rebels for the reasons you stated above about their outdated nature with potentially few replacement parts in production (though that does not necessarily mean that stockpiles of dusty decades-old spare parts are not sitting in some massive warehouse somewhere). The Empire would probably be most inclined to scrap any CIS ships or squadrons that fell into the Republic's hands during the Clone Wars simply because of the difficulty in maintaining vessels that their production lines were likely never tooled for at any point (unlike Old Republic ships and squadrons which would have undoubtedly remained in service at least in small numbers for years after the Clone Wars even as they were being phased out in preference for newer designs).

We can point to several examples in the real world of older military technologies remaining in service for years, decades, or even centuries after being declared obsolete. Or in some cases the tech remains in service simply because it has not been significantly improved upon. However, in Star Wars, it's not always clear whether the sleek flashy tech of the prequels is truly less advanced than the blocky less-CGI-enhanced technology of the OT. There are interesting discussions about a technological regression in Star Wars under the Empire but that can wait for another day. The point is, in a fantasy world with a fluctuating canon filled with contradictions and plenty of blank spots there are numerous ways in which a moderately creative person could put his or her favorite ships in the game.

When Nute Gunray ordered CIS forces to stand down form Mustafar all CIS forces and ships were ordered to report at pre-assigned Republic outposts where they were taken over for decommission. The Emipre stepped up rather brutally against the Separatists, for example they forced the Collicoid to dismantle their factories (they were the suppliers of stuff like Droidekas, Buzz Droids, Tri-fighters etc.), so there is really next to nothing remained of the CIS forces by the day the spark of the Rebellion caught fire. Obviously there were some CIS ships and units that were unable to comply that order (See Rebels Season 3) but it means a very small minority not worthy to get their own expansion.

On the other hand, if you do want to have CIS and Republic forces in your arsenal you're welcome to do so thanks to third party products, like Mel's or the Kuat Drive Yards . These are obviously not official material but in friendly games you may do whatever you wish.

Oh yes, no doubt they should be in small numbers, but I still do not think that that would disqualify them from getting an expansion or two. There are plenty of sources out there which explain away how exceptions make it into the Rebellion Era and beyond from old video games like Star Wars Galaxies and Empire at War to role playing books like the Star Wars Saga Edition. And I think a game like Armada which has consistently put exceptional characters and ships at the finger tips of their players would not find it any more inconsistent to give players the last couple of banking clan frigates in existence and such either. In fact, the Rogues and Villains expansion does just that with Nym and his bomber, the Firespray patrol ship, and so on; all of which were very rare and or very old craft.

I just thought it would be neat to see some of the prequel stuff make it into the game. They probably will eventually simply because after a few more years they will either need to start making stuff up to sell or start drawing from the prequels. Episode 8 and 9 plus anthology movies could turn out a whole slew of new ships to play with, but from what we have seen so far Disney is playing their hand somewhat conservatively in that regard at the moment. My bet is it will be a combination of all three approaches like X-Wing has done with preference towards material from the new movies as they roll out.

Thanks for the link by the way, cool stuff!

When Nute Gunray ordered CIS forces to stand down form Mustafar

The Canon is trying to promote the fact that the Shutdown order for the droid army was given by Darth Vader. Because Gunrey was already bisected.

In case you haven't seen it, Armada Shipyards ( https://armadashipyards.com/ ) has a dedicated Clone Wars section with new ships, squadrons, and upgrade cards. However it is far from complete and some cards have been obsoleted by the latest waves.

I hope to see them so I can buy them and make new debris field decor with them.....

Lol! I'd seriously like to see the Venator and some ARC-170 squadrons.

It's a big galaxy. I have no problem whatever with the Rebellion salvaging a few CIS ships, and the Empire having a few old Venators floating around.

Yeah, no one seems to appreciate the scale of this war. Attacking a planet is not simply the equivalent of attacking a city or even a nation, it is attacking a PLANET ! And there's a whole GALAXY to control, so I think the Empire is likely still using Republic vessels.

One thing I would love to see is a Dreadnaught (think the old Rebellion PC ship) that would be able for either faction to play.

Another would be the escort carrier that was also in Rebellion and that leaked back into the cannon through the Rebels tv series. Also avalible for both sides. Especially if it had a huge squadron activation, like 5.

That is really what the game lacks right now, imo. Ships that can be used by either side. A lot of Rebel ships (especially in the middle of the Legends canon) were repurposed Imperial ships that were captured during the war and refitted to fight the Empire. Seeing some of that in the small-medium ship range would be a nice flavor add.

The dreadnaught is pretty cool. I was dissapointed when wizkids ended their Star Wars mini line without getting around to that one.

As to the scale of the war, it's poorly depicted in most Star Wars related media I have been exposed to. You think about a whole planet's manpower and resources being dedicated to a war and then multiply that by the countless planets in the Star Wars universe and things get really really big.
