Thinking of playing again

By ccgtrader99, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

So I have a group of friends who all used to play and they busted out their old stuff and we had a blast. Its been two years since the LCG format and my question is this; has there been a reset?

In other words, would my friends and I have to buy 2 years worth of stuff to get into the game now? I just read the announcement on the main page and its very cool that FFG will make products that include everything ready to play.

Thanks for the help!

well it depends on the approach you want to take. easiest (and smallest purchase) way to play is to get the core set (once its back in print). that way you and up to 3 others can play right from the box. if you want to add one or 2 more players pick up the two house specific exapnsions for greyjoy and martell.

there are 3 sets of chapter packs out there (18 total packs) with a 4th coming out soon (1 pack a month). none of those are needed to play but are fun for 2 reasons. 1) they let you expand on the core set decks and 2) they add some new and interesting themes (i.e seasonal mechinics). they are about $10, but can be bought in any amount and in any order or not at all.

No there hasn´t been a reset or rotation or something like that. But nevertheless each new chapter cycle offers a very comeptive and playable theme so you probably won´t need every chapter pack to build a competive and playable deck. It somehow depends a little on what you are trying to make out of the game, if you want to play against friends you would surely have a rich and full playing experiences when you just play with the Core set, the Greyjoy and Martell expansion + the latest chapter cycle, if you want to win GenCon you probably need to invest in other chapter packs too. ;-)

If by "reset" he was referring to CCG-era cards no longer being "legal" to play, then yes there has been a bit of a de facto rotation. The LCG format has gotten big enough that it is playable on its own now. At least judging by the discussion on these boards it seems like most people are playing the LCG format these days. That's probably partially due to the loss of a lot of veteran players during the LCG switch and the influx of a lot of new players with the new format. But the cards still function pretty much same now; there's nothing stopping you and your friends from getting together and playing with your old cards and then beginning to supplement your decks with LCG cards. Perhaps after you get enough cards you might want to start building LCG only decks as well. Right now there's not too much of metagame beyond the local level (though there are some signs of a larger metagame forming with things like the OCTGN tournament and some big tournaments in Europe) so what is legal and what is "rotated" is really up to you and the people you play with.
