New POD scenario: Carnevale of Horrors

By rsdockery, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

That was unexpectedly fast! This is exciting!

Anyway, it seems to be a mask-themed adventure (taking place, naturally, at the Venetian Carnevale) where you're trying to protect bystanders from the evil cultists who are twisting the celebration to their own dark ends. You travel the map in a clockwise direction, spending clues to unmask revelers who can turn out to be innocent allies or enemies.

The listed rewards include an Ally asset as well as four mask assets (the two spoiled masks give you an immediate benefit upon entering play and can be discarded later to replace any skill with Strength or Agility, respectively; presumably, the others are for Intellect and Will).

Wow - totally unexpected. I didn't know they would throw these out without specific events (such as arkham nights etc.). That is interesting. Seems like they have to many ideas :) .

Any word if this is on shelves at the FFGC? I know Rougarou was a few days after being "available now".

Just told my FLGS about it, hopefully it's available to distributors, they were able to get Rougarou. So hoping they can get this one too, even if I have to wait a little bit.

wow, if this isn't something that is in every element of theme in my taste. . carnivale, ancient ones, tentacles, horror, mystery? it's already a knockout for me. Reminiscent of "The Steward's Fear" from LoTR LCG. i'm in love with it, and i love the way the game takes advantage of the traveling mechanic to make it feel as though you are actuality moving location to location progressively investigating.

edit: huge props for one of my favorite art pieces being re-used from the Call of Cthulhu LCG on the Salvatore Neri card.

Ooooohhhhhh

Unexpected standalone quest packs as well as cycle campaign packs..... this is new and quite exciting. Didnt see this coming.

Loving the money sink this may become hehe

The completionist in me is both loving and hating this. Glad to see they're releasing content quickly, though. Having been to Venice I can't wait to see what landmarks they choose for the location cards( Aside from the one they showed).

I've never been to Italy, nor New Orleans, but my wife has seen both. It's kind of cool that she recognizes a lot of the real places - Audobon Park, the Garden District. Can't wait to show her Carnevale!

When/If you get to visit one day, you can track your steps from the scenario :)

Question for those who already have Rougarou: Carnavale and Rougarou both say they can be played stand-alone, but I know that if played in a campaign they cost XP to "travel to". Does Rougarou include a suggested character "level" or XP amount for setting up your deck?

Love how this is revisiting the "terror in Venice" deluxe expansion from the call of cthulhu lcg. Same characters, locations and artwork with lots of extras added in.

As a stand alone, just use a standard deck, or level up with additional weaknesses like it says in the rules reference. In terms of adding it in as a side quest during an ongoing campaign, it costs each investigator 1 experience point to travel to New Orleans, and you can do it at whatever point you choose. I would assume similar for this.

Agreed - there is no "suggested" starting XP in the scenario. You just follow the rules reference. I am actually planing on "cheating" and playing Rougarou before the night of the zealot campaign with starter characters - and noting a -1 XP (that I am going to just take off of the first XP that I am getting). In an older thread, some said, that it might make the most sense story-wise to have Rougarou before. Maybe now, I will do Rougarou, Carneval, Night of the Zealot (depending on how many XP one gets at the end of the Rougarou - haven't played it yet).

For those who have Rougarou how is the POD quality? I know the draft packs for AGoT were decent quality but noticeably different to the rest of the cards.

I noticed a slight difference in the color of the backings from CoR to the base set, but otherwise it seemed fine to me.

The cardstock feels a bit flimsier, the colors aren't as sharply contrasted and look darker, and the art not as clearly delineated (looks like color bleeding). But still totally fine and playable, and once sleeved, you can't really tell much difference. But it's the only way you're going to get these cards, so what matter? =)

It's probably similar to that - pretty good quality, but less glossy and maybe a bit darker than the core set cards.

Ooh, someone's been playing Assassin's Creed II!

If you ever get the chance you should go! I went three years ago and my memories are as vivid as ever. I like that they're using real life locations it makes it feel really thematic. The art in this game is phenomenal, I'd love to see Fantasy Flight's art department.

Question: For those of you who played LOTR, how often were these standalone sets printed? I'm surprised to see another one so soon. Is this normal or a rarity?

Either way I'm excited.

I think LOTR had them twice a year but then dropped to once a year.

LOTR also had nightmare scenarios, which were more difficult versions of all the existing scenarios. Arkham doesn't need these as the difficulty can be adjusted.

Is this (and Curse of the Rougarou) going to be available in French through Edge Entertainment?

It pains me to see so much content releasing that isn't available in my main language :(

I imagine we're getting them more now than we will be going forward, since they couldn't really announce CoR or this one before they announced the basic game. I see this as something akin to a Mythos pack of the core set. I imagine going forward we'll get about 1 a year. That's purely conjecture though, who really knows.

One sentence HELL YES

I would argue that there is no precedent for something like that in LOTR.

LOTR had stand alone scenarios that were designed for specific gaming events - namely GenCon and then staring 2014 or 2015 (would have to check) so called "fellowship events". That means from the start of the game to 2014/15 there was one stand alone scenario per year, and then two standalone scenarios from 2014/15 onwards.

There has not been any standalone scenario that has been put out "just like that" without any event in mind. Thus my first statement that there hasn't been any precedent for this.

Given that there hasn't been any precedent, I would argue it is impossible to know what they are planing with this. Maybe this is just a one-shot, to get players more material at this early stage of the game where there isn't that much available. Maybe this is a reaction to some reviews that complained that the core has not had enough material to make it worthwhile (which I don't agree with, for the record). Maybe this is the start of a (semi?) regular release of some standalone scenarios - any guess seems reasonable.
