convince me on jet troopers

By eibon, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

I've seen a lot of ppl say that jet troopers will give imps a well needed boost but I personally don't see it. but I'm more than happy to be convinced coz lets face it who doesn't want flying stormtroopers. one step closer to super commandos!!!

Cheers

In the campaign I have seen 4 benefits of the regular Jet Troopers.

1) The cost of 4 threat is easier to come by than 6. Regular Jet Troopers are a great filler to open groups.

2) Mobile is advantageous on quite a few missions to move to make a shot, and then retreat to safety.

3) +1mp from Jets can be what's needed to make an attack and block line of sight or block a door or a path (the rebels need to spend an extra movement point).

4) Even when one-shotted, Agile can deny the heroes a surge to be used on recovering strain.

You forgot the biggest advantage: they aren't generic storm troopers.

Also, from what we've seen of the tiles, some of these maps look like they might be very restrictive of normal movement. One tile in particular, featured in the Cpt. Terro preview, showed an entire corner of a tile cut off, with only one small corridor of movement through it (and even then, through some difficult terrain. Jet troopers can ignore these issues with "mobile"- they'll be able to fly circles around opponents on some maps.

They have the Vehicle Trait, in the Campaign you can use them with the Armored Onslaught Class Deck.

They open Skirmish up for Vehicle Lists. A cheap unit was missing the, and there you can use the Command Cards Overrun, Fuel Upgrade, Overcharged Weapons and Heavy Armor. Since they are so cheap and until now Vehicle Units where quite expensive, you can balance that Activation count. (Such a list might not be there yet, but it's nice to have a new archetype)

Right, thanks to Vehicle I used Jet Troopers with General Sorin in the campaign, but they didn't get any surges off for Stun...

Oh god that is gross. Sorin is ruinous in campaign with some droids around. This is going to make him completely busted.

I'm very excited about the Jet Troopers and cannot wait to see them in the game - skirmish in particular - for reasons already mentioned by others above.

This is probably the wave with the least for the Empire (skirmish-wise) we've seen so far, but the Jet Troopers are glorious in their own right.

Don't forget that Dewback Riders are imperial.

(But yes, Mercenaries get a good boost with this wave.)

Right. Ironically, before JR was announced, I had expected flametroopers to be the next Stormtrooper variant we'd get. I guess I was sort of half-right, with Terro's flamethrower ability.

I know, but we've yet to see if Terro will be in Jabba's Realm, rather than only in the standalone. Either way the Jets seems to have gotten a lukewarm reception and I think they'll surprise.

And the Rebels, of course, are getting even less out of the campaign box, what with the Heroes being Mercenaries at heart. Jedi Luke and the Rangers look like a tasty compensation though.

For Skirmish / Regulars:

Overrun!

Did 8 damage in a doublemove last game. That was fun.

Cheap!

I usually have some cheap cannonfodder in my lists. Those are meant to open doors, carry crates, block terminals for a short time, stuff like that.

They need to be as fast, as tough, but above all else as cheap as possible. Exept for the free junk droid, you don't get cheaper than 2 points per figure. With Agile, there is no 2 point figure tougher than that. With mobile there is no imperial 2 point figure faster than that.

Not so nice to roll bad on attacks with no reroll, but attacking is not their Job anyways.

I really like them.

For Skirmish / Elites:

Give them either a Targeting Computer or Vader's Finest. The Reroll makes them better Heavies than the actual Heavies. Vader's Finest let's them move 4 before shooting and then move another 4, all mobile. That way, you get a blue die for sure. With Agile and 7 health, they are really tough, too.

I really like them!

Don't forget that two of the current skirmish maps feature large central tiles with difficult terrain, where the mobile key word would be very useful

I think the elite ones are going to be tricky to play well. Fairly tough to kill but only hit as hard as an eStormtrooper. Could be useful depending on what else is in the list. They could make great harassment units going deep into the back line and killing supports. You'll want Targeting Computer on those for sure. That being said, I prefer these to eHeavies. You do get some good value from the elites though, you get 4 more health each, extra damage on surge, extra dice at short rage and move free movement. I think we'll see a fair bit of use from these especially with Sorin. Focusing these guy is going to get you multiple 4 dice attacks with good movement and toughness.

They are a high risk, high reward unit. They will shine in close quarters and hit and run attacks.

The regular ones fill a good niche for Imperials. They are just like hired guns. good, cheap, fast. Disposable and annoying. They also combo well with things like Sorin and Overrun. There's some nasty things that can be done with Overrun, Mobile and a grenade. Throw in an exploding probe or Bossk and you're doing a lot of unmitigated damage. Bit of a one trick pony perhaps but it's a cheap nasty combo with little risk involved.

Imps don't need any boosts in skirmish thanks to zillo technique. In campaign it will be nice to have another option for a 4 point unit that's actually imperial.

Yes! 2 eJet Troopers, Sorin, and Advanced Com Systems. Can't wait for this in Skirmish. I also like the idea of Motivation in there on Sorin, but not sure it's worth it. THEN Squad Swarm and you got 4 Jet Troopers running around the map.

The problem is that it is only really worth building a list around Sorin if you have the Advanced Comm, so if you swap it to Motivation you'll have removed the one thing that makes the list tick.

I didn't think there was a limit for attachments--I meant to have both Motivation and Advanced Comm. Sorry for confusion.

Their backpacks have jets.

I've been thinking a lot about this, and the figure you can best compare the eJet Troopers is eStormtroopers, based on having the same attack and defense pools. If we break down the benefits of each one, I think eJet Troopers come out ahead of the competition in skirmish, assuming targeting computer on the eJet Troopers (Vader's Finest is also a good choice, but for the sake of this comparison we are using Targeting Computer).

eStormtroopers

9/3 Cost

3 Figures

5 Health (1.66 hp per point)

Squad Training (Position-based reroll on attack)

Last Stand

3 Attacks, with a maximum potential damage of 15

Access to the following command cards over eJet troopers: Reinforcements

eJet Troopers

8/4 Cost

2 Figures

7 Health (1.75 hp per point)

Fly-by (Position-based additional die)

Agile

Mobile

Vehicles

Reroll 1 attack die

2 attacks, with a maximum potential damage of 14

Access to the following command cards over eStormtroopers: Overrun, Repair, Heavy Armor, Fuel Upgrade, Overcharged Weapons, Squad Swarm and Call the Vanguard

When you break it down like this, the only benefits elite Stormtroopers carry over the elite Jet Troopers is the focus when a figure dies, higher potential damage (and dodge mitigation over more attacks), and reinforcements. Compare that to Mobile, Fly-By, Agile, health per point, and multiple powerful command cards. The eJet Troopers come out with some strong benefits over their contemporaries.

Another comparison can be made with the eHeavies, but I think they fit into a different role in a list compared to the Jet Troopers and don't really think a comparison is needed. I'm going to try running eJet Troopers for a bit and pair them with different squad makeups.

I tried them as part of my Sorin list with Vader's finest on them and really liked them. I don't think I recorded that match but I did do one with targeting computer on them if it interests anyone

Yeah eJet fits a pretty weird role: you want to hit and run, rather than go in and kill everyone

Interestingly, eJet is strictly better than eEBT assuming both are in close-combat (EBT shooting with red+green, eJet shooting with blue+blue+green), regardless whether enemy has black or white defense. % calculator here

I think some people reported success running eJets + TC / Vader's Finest + Sorin (w/ Adv. Comm)
