How good is your local gaming community?

Branching off from the 'how many games of xwing do you play a week' thread..

Well i realised that i'm very lucky living where I do.

I live in Nottingham in the Uk where Games Workshops head offices are based. So a lot of my gaming mates are ex employees and colleagues from GW. But because most of us who work at GW tend to stay in this city afterwards (its a really nice place TBH) and a lot of them set up companies in the industry in the area (foundry, warlord, mantic, etc etc) there tends to be a *massive* gaming community.

But what's it like in your area? Is it easy to get a game at a club or are you one of those poor souls that has to drive miles to get to a club or store and you dont know any local players?

Here in Maryland We have a vibrant gaming scene with quite a few stores that all host tournaments etc. NoVa is also very good for gaming as well. I play at a small store but we have 4-5 people every Tuesday for games. About 10 minutes away is Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie which has up to 20-30 on Wednesdays for X-wing.

GW's US HQ used to be here before they moved to Memphis.

We have one club that meets 3 weeks a month. Great people and the owner of the LGS is involved, too, so there is no lack of new people coming in. So regular gaming can be done well, if not as spectacular as in more hotspot areas. Tournament support is a bit low, with one 40k tournament a year and a tiny X-Wing store championship. We are looking to expand that (especially for X-Wing) and are forming a Blood Bowl league at the moment, but there is a lot going on for most people, so we might take a while to pick up.

2 hours north there are a few more X-Wing tournaments, about 3-4 per year.

Eh. Not great, but that's only because I have to cross the bridge to get to where there would be good ones, and that's typically just too much hassle.

I don't really play xwing but...

My LGS is mostly yugioh/magic/warmahordes/guildball. A little bit of xwing and 40k, and some boardgames. Almost nobody plays dice masters wich saddens me to no end... I usually play at game nights at my friends house anyway.
