Does anyone else use the old WotC minis for casual play.

I have in the past.
Yes. Why not? Its casual, the old mini's are worth next to nothing and I have 2 tons of them.
Yup. Have one set of Hired Guns using swminis. Makes it easier to distinguish them when I used 2x rHG. Now I use Greed + HG instead.
Yes, in skirmish all the time. One because it gives more options to try out, and two it helps tell different squads apart.
Also it is fun to play at the game store and have people ask if I painted the figures and I respond that they came painted and watch them try to process before telling them about WOTC minis.
I purchased the ones to use in place of the droid tokens in bespin gambit.
I use them if I need extra figures, like you said for Hired Guns.
I also used them recently to try out some of the new Jabba's Realm stuff before it came out.
A friend of mine uses them for the Junk Droid like you're saying.
I used old WotC minis for Han and Chewie in campaign until the first wave of ally/villain packs arrived. I also used some WotC droid mini (I forget what it was) as IG-88. I don't think the Royal Guard Champion came up until after I had the packs.
How is the scale? May look into buying me some.

I think the WOTC minis are just slightly smaller than the FFG ones, though not enough to be annoying. They're less detailed though.
I actually think the astromech droids from WOTC fit the scale of IA better. R2 in IA always seemed a little big to me.

scale is great.
check out my eBay listings for SWM proxies.
I have more than listed.
LMK if you'd like a specific piece.

you may want to check the values of your SWM(star wars minis)
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised
Yes, hired guns, wookie warriors, echo base troopers, allied troopers, gamoreans, weequay pirates, snow troopers, heavy troopers, storm troopers, allied scouts, rebel smuggler, wing guard, a few others. They're cheap, mostly $0.25 and most importantly, they're already painted. After painting 80ish miniatures I still have quite a ways to go...

I'd throw a few $55 rancors, but I'll be using those for IA
Minis are about the same size. However, wotc minis are 28mm heroic scale (anatomically correct, hands, heads, etc). FFG'S minis are 28mm like GW. This means they have hands and heads that are larger than normal. This makes them look a bit more cartoony, but it also makes the minis more durable as they are thicker everywhere.
Both are good. I plan to use the wotc models until I get my ffg minis painted.
Good thing about the wotc models is you can use substitute characters, custom characters, etc. They made a ton of characters that span the old Republic to the new republic and almost every expanded universe character.
