Would you use characters with no dice?

By KrisWall, in Star Wars: Destiny

I've heard a lot of people complain about spending hundreds of dollars on packs/starters/full boxes and feeling like they don't have enough characters to field a variety of decks.

The obvious issue with characters is that they are all rare or legendary. As such, even opening two full boxes doesn't guarantee that you'll get a variety of characters. This raised the question of what uncommon, dice free characters would look like.

I'm assuming they'd have to have an Action or triggered condition to make up for not having a die. They'd be sort of like Supports that can exhaust but have no die, such as Jedi Council.

What about this...

Totally not Han in the Cantina

Uncommon Yellow Hero Character

Rules Text: "Before this character would take 1 or more damage, deal 1 damage to an enemy character."

Lucky Lou

Uncommon Blue Hero Character

Rule Text: "After this character activates, give 1 shield token to a friendly character."

Obviously not considering points or health, but do you think this would be a viable way to add more common characters to the game? Also, obviously not considering game balance with those two abilities. I just made them up off the top of my head.

This is why you buy a starter (or two).

GUARANTEED characters/dice.

I think anything is possible in the future. I could definitely see a no dice low cost common character in the future. Ewoks? Mouse Droid?

I bought one of each starter and a box of boosters and I have lots of options. Your gonna get 10+ characters in a box plus the 4 from the starters.

That said, I could see cheap non dice characters, I think that would be a new option. Ewoks and Jawas woot

The starters will definitely get you started, but that's it. I opened a full booster box and got a single yellow villain... Bala-tik. Pretty severely limits my deck building options. I bought a second box mainly to get more characters.

I'm getting the impression that we have a lot of CCG novices here, and they haven't worked out how to use the secondary market quite yet. Keep at it, kiddos! We're still a looong ways from $500 standard decks.

I haven't played a ccg since the 90's so yeah I'm learning. After this next box, I'll be buying singles

Let me know whatcha need. I can prob help ya out.

And also to be honest, Rey/Finn and Kylo are really good starter heroes. Theyre actually very competitive. Yeah you still need the good upgrade/event cards, but as for characters, theyre solid choices even in constructed.

Smart man right here.

I got a few deck options out of a gravity feed although I seemed to get more villain characters.

To be fair, the secondary market is pretty distorted by lack of supply right now. At current prices, you can almost make up the cost of a booster box just by selling the legendaries in it.

Apparently, the box I opened was not the norm. I ended up with Vader, 2 Qui-Gon Jinns, Poe, Padme, Jango Fett, FO Stormtrooper, Admiral Ackbar, Rebel Trooper, and Padawan. I've opened 9 additional packs and pulled another Poe, Captain Phasma, Raider, and Leia.

I want cheap little modifier characters. Like c3po could exhaust to modify supply, disrupt or discard result.

We lack 5-6 point range options. Keep focus on the dice but give us options to make under pointed pairs more viable. Like elite ray and elite ackbar.

I think larger boosters would help. Three die with a guaranteed character sounds good to me. It would make drafting possible.

I guess what you are describing is an actual support card, not unlike that of BB-8. of course the flipside of that is that you have to pay for bb-8 and use an action to play it, but the payoff is that he's made from Adamantium because there virtually no way of killing him!!!! Well AT-ST might have something to say about that.

I think Dice-less characters could be a very interesting piece of design space for FFG to explore, Cheap characters that have effects when you exhaust them. Basically Free supports cards that start in play but can die.

I have no doubt that dice-less character cards will be in future sets.
