jux's stuff

By juxstapo, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Disclaimer: I've a severe tendency to fly off on an enthusiastic tangent for a bit, then get bored and start painting something else.

(As a result my hobby closet is chock full of "WIP"s, and by extension my x-wing stuff is also. This is just the less-worser bits)

I have drawn gobs of inspiration from people on here and I vowed to give appropriate credit, a thread link, and a public display of affection to everyone I stole an idea from. But you might have to give me a bit while I dig back through this forum to suss out what I stole from whom. (I had a Hobby Related Original Idea once, when I came to my doctors said dwelling on it would only cause a recurrence.)

Real life has made mincemeat of my hobby time as of late, reducing it to a few hours a week. I'm pleased to notice a detectable improvement in my painting, but due to the paucity of time spent and work done, my improvements have been glacial.

I was much less pleased to note that a mediocre cameraman can turn a mediocre paint job into a really bad paint job.

Anyhoo, here's some of the old stuff, from the first iteration of the X-Wing painting threads.

Backstabber was my homeboy.

EuEJILv9W9WYMXNl1

Stabby was my favorite Imp pilot in the first core set.

I dressed up a six ship mini swarm with these greys and green jeweling on the glass. In retrospect the glass was "jeweled" too much.. overshot my white reflective dots to the point where they looked more like Great Aunt Opal's favorite brooch than a little spaceship.

The obligatory cloak..

phantom_zpsfsanqhlm.jpg

Wish I had added a starfield.

Wish I had arraigned the effect more neatly (the left side is an utter mess)

Wish I had painted the ship itself first

But none of it bothered me enough to fix

Red... uh, Blue fli.. uh

x%20wing%20flight_zpsds6uhl4y.jpg

I'm proud of my astromechs and the spiral stripe on Wedge's upper starboard cannon.

I'm ashamed of the squadron markings on the two blues that I never took the time to clean up and the fact that when I bought my first haul of x-wing stuff, before I had any clue what was what, I gushed on my blog about how the T-65 was probably the most balanced ship in the game. #ignorantchild

Bae's Ride

hawk%20290_zpstjcrmxao.jpg

Submitted this one for Cliff's contest when he was running TheMetalBikini.com.. The camera is definately not kind to it, ugh.

This is my wife's favorite ship, mostly because I painted it for her, (asked her which one she would like me to paint and in what colors), and whipped up a bunch of blue rebels to go with it, than any degree of efficacy... she plays to humor me more than to win anyway.

All the cool kids were doing it before there were Aces..

a%20wing_zpsr4bybz8z.jpg

Attempted this paint job because I adore McQuarrie's work.

My wife's second favorite ship, less due to emotional context and more because she kicks my **** with it.

Sloppy paint job with cheap acrylics and I broke the cannons doing it (like my watch winder blasters?)... but one thing I like about it more than the real Prototype pilot... the rear quarter windows. When I finally get around to snagging the Aces, the only thing I wont be able to resist doing is painting on those little quarter windows.

The equally obligatory axis rotation

b%20wing_zpsd2tfg7hv.jpg

Yes, the flying crucifix bugged me too... wanted it to match the wife's squads... broke cannons while working on it also.

Just to see if I could

cobra_zpsjrfun0zy.jpg

Eh, sorry about that one...

My favorite. (aren't I so kooky and lovably unique?? <_< )

interceptor%20front_zpskhey44qu.jpg

interceptor%20rear_zpstny18o8y.jpg

Another "in before Aces" repaint. Like most generic fan boys I love me some interceptors (Return of the Jedi is like Christmas for me.... trees and lights and familiarity and presents in the form of things exploding and red and green lightsabers clashing), and Soontir needed a proper ride.

Ugh, sloppy. :(

Greebly AF

y%20wings_zpsoabxbuwc.jpg

Very first mod was grinding a hole in that Y-Wing and gluing a bit of floral wire through a bead to make a ball turret... which I then failed to ever paint (as you can see)... scum Y faired a little better with watch parts... still didn't care enough to paint 'em though.... one day. Now that they're here for all to see I'll be shamed into it

She may not look like much but.... well... she isn't.. really

falcon_zps0eluxdso.jpg

Never used the YT-1300 all that much nor was I sufficiently enamored enough to paint or mod it extensively. Had to add an engine glow, because that was just irritating, then finally couldn't resist spinning that top quad around. Also used it to kinda develop my reflected starfield a bit better. Black, white dots, random blotched dark blue glaze, repeat until desired depth achieved... it either resembles 80's cartoon stars, or kid's toothpaste.

Most recent and favoritests:

Here is where I attempted to "get serious", and for that I want to thank Rodent Mastermind. As I said, my hobby time is limited, but I made a determined effort to stick with this one. Mostly in hour long sessions stretched out over a two and a half month period. I'd get off work (construction), help-ish wife tend to kids (one deaf, one autistic, lotta work, she tends to them and me both. Absolute superhero) and if I wasn't too fragged put a little time in with this ship. Focus on one stage and got it right before moving on.

Which sounds very basic and obvious, (and it is), but it was a far cry from my previous tendency to go "TraLaLa! OOH! Cool Idea!! Cut! Sand! Glue! Glob! Paint! Smear! Ehhhh... Bored now... on to something else". At 32 I finally shed that 13 year old attention span and treated this one almost like work, just constant, calm, determined effort... and found it actually very very pleasant and relaxing. And of course turned out a much better paint job than anything I'd done previously. I realized "Who cares if this is taking a long time? You aren't racing anyone... you aren't under a contract... and once it's done, then what? Just enjoy each brush stroke and let what'll be, be.."

Glib remarks about poor photography aside, this one actually bugs me. I spent much time blending shadows and highlights and the picture eradicated it. Gonna have to branch my hobby out into miniature photography too.

A smidge less Royal Guard and a scooch more Richthofen.

And a special thanks to Panz3r for letting me rip his reflected planet motif. Mine came out a smidge potato shaped though... not sure what a Royal Guard Interceptor was doing over Kessel, but there you have that.

Oh! You like those cannon barrels? More watch parts!! Check this out! Greebles for days from Hobby Lobby!

I have to say I love this forum (this part of this forum). Everyone is very supportive and helpful. Us noobs are welcomed and the proper artists are inspirational and positive, good times.

Merry Christmas / Happy Whatever Holiday you prefer everyone.

Great collection...I was about to post that some of the pics were missing, then refreshed and realised you'd been adding them!

...wish I had steady enough hands for something like the reflected planet, but not even 40yrs ago could I have managed that!

Looking forward to seeing more...and I can definitely identify with the "fly off on an enthusiastic tangent for a bit, then get bored and start...something else" approach to hobbies!

You're much too hard on yourself Juxstapo. All those ships you applied paint to are great repaints. BUT as it is with all things creative, the artist only sees the flaws in his work.

My E-wing lost a cannon recently and I wasn't sure how to go about replacing it; thanks for the link.

And Happy Holidays to you and yours as well. Now go finish those Y-Wings!

This rings true and I can feel your pain on photo quality because I just use my phone and a lot of the work I put in doesn't really show. I don't really mind though as it's just something I do for fun and to pimp out the ships that I like to fly, or are in need of an upgrade ;).

Echoing Claarbar: Seeing what the camera sees is shocking, eye opening, and ultimately unfair in many ways. I have a half dozen ships I'm proud of, but because they don't photograph well, they're not going to get posted on my thread until I have time to revisit them and clean up some of my work. I get compliments on them when I bring them out to the table, but the camera shows us a view few are ever going to actually see unless we bring a magnifying glass. It's just the way it is, but some painters here are crazy good. No flaws to speak of AND they mod & scratch build. But then again, they have decades of experience too.

Best advice I can give anyone: just have fun with it.

Welcome back to the painting forum.

Its always good to see new people and those returning.

And I'm liking your repaints too.

Its a great forum and always good that we can inspire each other.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

All the best.

Barry.

I really like the aurebesh letters on Backstabber, it's the kind of subtle personalization i'd like for my TIEs.

But the color of the cockpit doesn't work as well as in the interceptor... Maybe is the light on the photo.

Nice work!

Cobra!

Yea, no doubt about the cockpit; that was a tangible function of time and affection. I did a half dozen TIE/ln in one blitz and was frankly sick of 'em by the time I finished, :) (and not being too uber careful to begin with), but the Interceptor was a difficult-to-find gift from a sibling, so it warranted more particularity.

Cobra!

I love it! But he always misses!! ;)

As soon as I can get my hands on a Striker (B&N and local FLGS both empty), doing this conversion

Ohyah, can someone recommend a source for plasticard or something comparable, (make those spars with?.... chop up an old debit card perhaps?)

Dont use Debit cards, the texture would be to smooth, they barely like sharpie markers on them, let alone paint, and you really wont have the texture you want, and they dont like being "carved" to create said texture of a solar panel.

Crikey why didn't the Tie Strikers look like that !

they look so much better than what was in Rogue.

as for finding what plastics to use.

try this........

Plastic & Glue, How to use and find it.

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/235214-plastic-glue-how-to-use-and-where-to-get-it/

its a thread I put together for those that wanted to know what to use and where to get it.

there are links in there you might find useful.

all the best,

Barry.

Augh! Thanks Barry, that write up will be uber useful.

Sorry for the long absence, wasn't blowing anyone off, just working long hours seventy miles from home and not wanted to attempt a hack handed response via dodgy smartphone.

I would have very much preferred that design over the current, if I ever break an adv. prototype and a striker(or find them on the cheap) I may try to make that version.

Finally caught some inspiration for the Y-wings :) Don't know how long it will take, but I'm actually working on one as we speak.

No joke:

I got this far and suddenly it hit me...

... we're supposed to be playing this game in space. <_<

tie%20fo%20chrome%20big_zps0rn7wld5.jpg

Well... everyone wanted to got back to Jakku, right?

EDIT: OOOO! I got a desk! That's it in the background!! I got a monstrosity of an 80's era hand-me-down desk into which will fit all of my paints and brushes and tools! As funny as that sounds, this is significant because hitherto I had been keeping all my hobby gear in a closet, pulling it out on occasion, spreading out on the dining room table, painting a bit, then packing it all back up before either my autistic kid could adjust anything (lots of things look better with a bottle of acrylic dumped on them); or before my wife could get properly irritated at the little spaceships everywhere.... thusly, not much painting got done. But Nooow, now I feel like a car restoration enthusiast who just got a fully stocked garage!

Woooo, dedicated hobby space! I can relate. I think many of us can relate.

That canopy is looking good.

(For the record -- the game isn't always in space. Playing on terrain in an atmosphere is a great way to mix it up.)

Just my quickie offering for Piscopas' Z thread :)

...I need to padawan under someone for photography.

Jux, that newest Zed looks like it was inspired by a P51 Mustang flying at or shortly after D-Day, its a great looking ship.

:) right on the money. Been calling it my P-fifzee one

OKAY! I have actually been working on stuff...

actually an unforeseen consequence of having a hobby desk is I suddenly have a dozen projects started but nothing completed. :|

Anyhoo... here's my HD update for Rebel Assault... added a few more polygons to the cockpit mesh:

(And yea, I am using the rest of the Striker for something else ;)

You only have to start worrying when the uncompleted projects start spilling over onto the floor & elsewhere in the room...and then into other rooms (I haven't actually had to store anything in another house...yet )
