Other non-digital Star Wars Games

By Thrawn86, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I enjoy playing X-Wing with my family and friends, and am wondering what other good Star Wars games are out there. I remember playing SW the Trading Card Game by WOTC (wizards of the coast) when I was younger and liking it a lot. Armada looks interesting, but time consuming and too complicated for my wife and younger kids. I bought SW Risk for my kids, and it was awful.

What non-digital Star Wars games are y'all playing besides X-Wing?

Star Wars: Rebellion, which is my number 1 game of all time. Love it, though (or because) it takes hours to play. It's 2 players and very involved, certainly not for the younger kids though once they're able to play a reasonable game of chess they should be fine.

Imperial Assault, which might work with your family, as it is coop (don't know how many there are, it supports four heroes and an Imperial player). An app, like the one available for Descent, is supposedly in the works.

Those are the ones in my collection, and I think that will be enough SW for the forseeable future.

SW the card game might be good, loads of expansions in the living card game system.

SW Destiny is that dice collecting game they've just launched, but I've no interest in a dice game so I couldn't tell you much about it.

Rebellion is superb. 100 bucks well invested. If your children are too young to play the game you can pew pew with the little minis. Rugged, simple and inspiring.

And the game is ultra intense. A must have if you are a OT fan

Rebellion is awesome but big and long and complex. Imperial Assault is great but $$$.

Destiny is also decent but risks $$$, albeit less so than most collectible games.

Thanks for all the recommendations! Rebellion is on sale on Amazon for $70! I'm going to get it :D Even if the kids can't handle it yet, they will someday, and I'll be mad if they stop making the game by the time my kids are old enough for it.

I'm primarily interested in games that focus on Episodes 4-6. I don't consider any post-Lucas movies to be Star Wars...

So where do the sequels fall for you? They are not post-Lucas but you left them off...

I didn't like Episodes 1 or 2 (why create an annoying Gungan character? ). Episode 3 was good. I grew up on 4-6, so it remains my primary area of SW enjoyment.

Likewise on 4-6 (I saw the first one on release when I was 7, pivotal moment for my imagination and development). I was bitterly disappointed in I but was ok with 2 & 3. Middling on TFA but wildly excited for Rogue One.

I'm hopeful for Rogue One. I expected TFA to be big on graphics and light on plot. My expectations were met. I mean seriously, how much of Episode IV are you going to directly copy before your film is no longer a reboot? And why did Kylo Ren have to take his mask off? Lost all respect for him after seeing his baby face and long hair. He just needed skinny jeans and all-stars to complete his look...

And remember Star Warriors. A loooong time ago it was amazing. The grandpa of x wing.

Im very much the same. Its all about the 'rebellion' era for me as thats what i grew up on.

Prequels were dire and over explained things better left as myth and made you wonder , like what the 'clone wars' were.

TFA was a good action film but not terribly original. I think what made it for me was the appearances of the old heroes,

Rogue 1 on the other hand I have high hopes for. Can't really see the need for the tie striker and u wing.. i'd have preferred them to have used tie bombers to do ground assaults and something already existing from the lore... but marketting needs new toys to sell to the fans :)

But to me R1 will have 'proper strormtroopers'., 'proper tie pilots', flashbacks to OT characters when they were a little youger and who were underdeveloped in the OT (mon mothma, crix madine etc)

Ranked in order of my current favorites:

1 - Armada - high buy-in cost, but the most beautiful tabletop experience you will ever have, and strategically masterful game.

2 - Destiny - Very cheap buy-in to get started but potentially addictive! Very fun and I missed the sensation of opening boosters! Love this game so much right now! like wow!

3 - Rebellion - Literally the only drawback is that it's only 2 players. Don't believe the box when it claims 4 players. That's like saying Chess is a 4 player game... you get to move the pawns and I get to move the rest?

4- Epic Duels - hard to find game, but a blast to play with a group! Total free-for-all battle royale!

5 - Imperial Assault - Only reason this is so low is because I never have time to play it anymore. So much potential here though, honestly Can't wait for the app!

That IA app can't arrive soon enough.

I'm definitely getting Armada some day. My kids get bored after 45 minutes of tabletop gaming, so X-Wing is better for now. I think I'm gonna create an amazon wishlist for Armada and get pieces as they go on sale.

I don't get Destiny. Is it a RPG? I've never got into those.

These are the rules.
