Wes, Jess and.

By Mrk1984, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I am thinking of bringing a Wes/Jess combo to an upcoming regional. Here are the lists I'm considering.

B-Wing Control:

X-Wing: •Wes Janson (32)

Integrated Astromech (0)

Veteran Instincts (1)

•R3-A2 (2)

B-Wing: Dagger Squadron Pilot (27)

Collision detector (0)

Ion Cannon (3)

Z-95 Headhunter: Tala Squadron Pilot (13)

T-70 X-Wing: •Jess Pava (28)

Integrated Astromech (0)

•M9-G8 (3)

Total: 100/100

With this, the plan is obvious. Stress and strip with Wes, then slap them with an ion token for a nice attack next round. This should be able to take out a Defender in 2 rounds of fire baring odd dice results. Variation: drop M9 for R2 and put FCS on the B for the 2nd shot. Concern: Wes will die quick, probably during the 2nd pass if I'm lucky.

Biggs:

X-Wing: •Wes Janson (34)

Integrated Astromech (0)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Flechette Torpedoes (2)

•R3-A2 (2)

T-70 X-Wing: •Jess Pava (27)

Integrated Astromech (0)

•R2-D6 (1)

Veteran Instincts (1)

X-Wing: •Biggs Darklighter (26)

Integrated Astromech (0)

•R4-D6 (1)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Total: 99/100

Biggs will provide protection, and Jess is bumped to PS for Ryan and any PS4. Variation: drop torps on Wes and put M9 on Jess to boost Wes.

Drop Wes?

T-70 X-Wing: •Jess Pava (26)

Integrated Astromech (0)

R2 Astromech (1)

X-Wing: •Tarn Mison (25)

Integrated Astromech (0)

R7 Astromech (2)

T-70 X-Wing: Blue Squadron Novice (25)

Integrated Astromech (0)

R2 Astromech (1)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Z-95 Headhunter: Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Total: 100/100

Without Wes, I lose some control, but with good flying, I should be able to get 4+ shots into a ship at least once. Tarn gives a decent end game 1 on 1. Concern: Low PS might lead to dead ships before the chance to shoot, flying these in formation takes more practice and isn't very forgiving with their dials.

So which is less likely to be totally destroyed?

It all depends really.

What are you expecting to run into a lot of in your area?

Wes has a great ability but after the 1st pass its hard to get him to re engage against more agile ships. Also I'm not sure how this list would fair against other large ships. Like a fat Han backed up by a ghost.

Least likely to be destroyed? The third list. Three x-wings is hard to chew through in a 75 pt tournament structure, especially if you play it right. In the other two lists you're doing a lot of work on the wrong ship:

Tarn Mison should have M9-G8, not Jess. Against a swarmy list, fly Tarn into a more tempting position and use him in a wild goose chase. He can use M9-G8 on eveyr attack coming against him, and is much cheaper than Jess.

Wes is good, but there's not much of a meta for him at the moment. Everything either doesn't care if you strip tokens (Han) or has plenty to spare (Inquisitor). If you are going to fly him, I'd drop R3-A2 for BB-8, just to give you some flexibility.

The third list is a bit of an oddball one - R7 won't be used until the endgame, so its not super helpful. The T-70s really don't need R2s either. Going with the theme of a named X-wing + Z-95 swarm, I'd recommend:

Nien Numb (35)

Stay On Target

Autothrusters

Targeting Astromech

Tarn Mison (26)

M9-G8

Integrated Astromech

2 x Tala Squadron Pilots (13)

Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

Total: 99 pts.

You're weak against aces here, but you've got a good chance against swarms. Nien is my X-wing hero at the moment.

It works on speed 3 maneuvers - on which the x-wing has 7. Put in a terrible maneuver (say a 3-left off the board), then when you reveal it, use stay on target to rotate it to the perfect maneuver at the time (say a 3-tallon roll right to behind an enemy TIE swarm), get a stress, lose it due to Nien's ability, gain a target lock from the Astromech, ten perform your normal action.

Tarn is Tarn. Use him as a distraction.

You have 2 Talas for PS 4 handy shots, and blocking against aces. Then there's the essential PS 2 Bandit. There is a lot of PS 3 monsters out there at the moment (Contracted scouts and Ghosts) so having a PS 2 blocker to mess with them is both unexpected and phenomenally handy.

Overall, you get a list with great arc dodging against PS 6 or lower, good blocking against PS 3 or higher, and an overall decent amount of firepower.

Wes is good, but there's not much of a meta for him at the moment. Everything either doesn't care if you strip tokens (Han) or has plenty to spare (Inquisitor). If you are going to fly him, I'd drop R3-A2 for BB-8, just to give you some flexibility.

Target Locks seem to be the new black so I would say there is still room for Wes. Vessery is very popular at the moment so stealing the TL he was going to use will kill 2 birds with one stone. U-boats may have gone away but a few lists still like to open up with an Ordnance salvo. Omega Leader can be hampered if you are constantly stealing her tokens etc.

If there are any defenders in the meta near you, Wes is still incredibly viable. Not to mention everything Karhedron stated.
