Well Isn't That Special: Gambler "Build Off"

By Richardbuxton, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So episode 89 of The Order 66 Podcast dropped in the last day or so. This time they returned to the ever popular Well Isn't Thst Special segment. This time they discuss the Gambler from Fly Casual and the Smuggler Career.

In the episode they dive deep into the interesting and thematic talents of this specialisation, then they have themselves a buildoff. The three hosts came up with some very interesting characters; a Warden Gambler, a Scientist Gambler and a Gunslinger Gambler. So a very broad selection, highlighting the incredible versatility of the Gambler spec. Not wanting to miss out on all the fun, how about we have our own little build off right here on the forums.

Rules are simple; You must use the Gambler spec, although not necessarily start in it, build using standard character creation rules! then 100 additional earned XP to spend on developing an interesting and unique character. Try to provide some background, from one sentence to an entire novel, and perhaps something short on motivation etc.

Edit: here is a rough time stamp list of the various segments:

Meat of the show starts at 11:23

Buildoff starts at 47:30,

Warden Gambler character is up first at 47:50

Scientist Gambler is next at 51:58

Finally the Gunslinger Gambler is at 57:50

At 1:05:05 They move onto "When Good Games Go Bad" a segment for answering tricky questions about games that have had problems beyond the story, where things may have become personal between players and some advice has been sought.

At 1:24:10 they answer a couple of listeners questions

At 1:42:20 they're into Post Show where they talk unrelated stuff from sportsball through pop culture and this time also about GM Daves near death experience 10 years ago.

So there is about 55 minutes of stuff related to the Gambler discussion there. (I really wish they had the time to put chapter marks into their episodes)

I have a love/hate relationship with the Order 66 podcast, mostly hate, but I might have to listen to this one. Thanks for the tip!

Podcasts that last multiple hours will simply never be something that I listen to.

I might be able to make time for something like a quick Skill Monkey episode, but that’s about it.

Maybe if I had a three-hour one-way train commute, I might listen to some long podcasts. But otherwise, it’s just not going to happen.

Fanus Charr: Devaronian Gambler/Shadow (look familiar Richard?)

Fanus wasn't strong enough in the force to become a Padawan, but was taken into a special secret program with other failed initiates doing espionage work for the order during the Clone Wars. After Order 66 Fanus headed deep into the core to continue fighting for good while walking the line between dark and light. Gambling is his only income. As such he cheats almost exclusively to insure he'll always have money to fight for the greater good. He's not at all above using his connection with the force to help him get out of a jam when he gets caught. Obligation is Oath, as he still feels compelled to continue the work he started despite having no support network.

Starts out in Shadow. Morality 50 to get 10 more XP so starts at 105 XP. First rank in Deception is free from species.

Cunning to 4: 40 XP

Presence to 2: 20 XP

Free Career ranks in Skulduggery, Perception, Deception

Free spec ranks in Streetwise and Skulduggery.

Buy into Gambler for 30

Buy 5 XP ranks of Grit, Up the Ante and Convincing demeanor from the gambler tree.

100 earned XP:
15 XP for 2 ranks of Cool.

50 XP spent to buy Codebreaker (don't want it, but it's a tax to pay to get what I do), another rank of Grit, Sleight of Mind and Now You See Me (once per session hard deception check to make 4 NPCs within medium range forget he was there, handy for when being caught cheating)

Back over to the Gambler tree for 10 XP grit, 10 XP second chances and 15 XP second chances.

Here we have a gambler who knows how to find a game, cheats very well, makes extra money when playing to fund his exploits, can reroll two positive dice per encounter and can get away clean if he gets caught. Not to mention is fun to play.

I can agree with you there. First episode of Order 66 I listened to contained about 25 minutes worth of self promotion before they mentioned the game :P

I do find myself tapping the 30-second skip button repeatedly during the beginning of the shows, but the "meat of the show" sections I've found to be helpful and informative.

Starts out in Gambler so get four free career skills instead of three.

How are you using Now You See Me? Isn't it a force talent? By starting in Gambler, you don't have a force rating. (Same thing for Sleight of Mind, though you don't see to be focused on using that one). Am I missing something?

Yeah it's definitely not for everyone, being free to listen isn't always possible. I'm in the opposite situation, I commute a couple of times a week for 2+ hrs each way, other days I'm close to home. Then when I'm actually working I can listen too. I also listen when doing housework, although my family interrupting usually stops that. Some weeks I listen to 30+ hours of podcasts!

The thing is though that I hardly watch tv, and haven't played anything but iOS games in years. Podcast IS my media consumption method.

Could you tell me when they start talking about that Warden Gambler.

I'm a proponent of the longer format, but I realize I might be in the minority here. When there's not farming or driving to be done, yeah, it takes some time to get through it. It just feels like chatting with my buddies.

Sharing a public index is a kindness to all! I'd love chapter markers too, but it is what it is.

Lyrics

On a warm summer's eve

On a train bound for nowhere

I met up with the gambler

We were both too tired to sleep

So we took turns a-starin'

Out the window at the darkness

The boredom overtook us,

And he began to speak

He said, "Son, I've made a life

Out of readin' people's faces

Knowin' what the cards were

By the way they held their eyes

So if you don't mind me sayin'

I can see you're out of aces

For a taste of your whiskey

I'll give you some advice"

So I handed him my bottle

And he drank down my last swallow

Then he bummed a cigarette

And asked me for a light

And the night got deathly quiet

And his faced lost all expression

He said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy

You gotta learn to play it right

You've got to know when to hold 'em

Know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your money

When you're sittin' at the table

There'll be time enough for countin'

When the dealin's done

Every gambler knows

That the secret to survivin'

Is knowin' what to throw away

And knowin' what to keep

'Cause every hand's a winner

And every hand's a loser

And the best that you can hope for is to die

in your sleep

And when he finished speakin'

He turned back toward the window

Crushed out his cigarette

And faded off to sleep

And somewhere in the darkness

The gambler he broke even

But in his final words

I found an ace that I could keep

You've got to know when to hold 'em

Know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your money

When you're sittin' at the table

There'll be time enough for countin'

When the dealin's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em (when to hold 'em)

Know when to fold 'em (when to fold 'em)

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your money

When you're sittin' at the table

There'll be time enough for countin'

When the dealin's done

You've got to know when to hold 'em

Know when to fold 'em

Know when to walk away

And know when to run

You never count your money

When you're sittin' at the table

There'll be time enough for countin'

When the dealin's done

Man I could go for some roasted chicken right about now.
