Demolition / Tech Use and a frag grenade on a tripwire....

By player156413, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

In the last few sessions my Guardsman has had the luck to aquire and use some demolition charges, used to great effect to blow up stuff. However in the last session one of these was set up with a remote trigger. I place the bomb, make the roll, retreat to safe distance and... the GM calls for a tech use test to pull the trigger...

Not having this skill and for speed of play i hand it off the the techpriest and viola!.. big explosion.

After the session i ask the GM his reasoning. He says using radio's is under tech use. I think that remote detonators should come under demolition as they only work in that sense. The conversation also slewed off into what skill would be used to attatch a frag grenade to a tripwire (e.g. for camp defence), would this be survival or demolition?

Have any other players/GM's had this discussion? and what were the results? or what opinions do people have as to the appropriate skill..

Well, I can't speak about this in-game. But, IRL, when we had demolitions training in the Army, we were taught how to prep and use all sorts of detonators, including remote ones. So, in my game, Demolitions will cover every aspect of setting up and using explosives, and their detonators. JMHO. Hope that helps. happy.gif

I have to agree with the dear Sister here.

Most demo squads/stormtroopers/demolition disposers have training in all areas of bombs: how to make them, how to set them, how to safely set them off with out hurting yourself, how to disarm, etc. So, in theory, Demo skill SHOULD cover everything.

def. should fall under the demolitions skill. having to roll on Tech Use is redundant.

as stated by other posters that kind of thing is covered in demoltiions training.

cheers

Two things stand out here:

- A demolitions guy who can't go through all the steps on his own would be rather useless for several reasons, the the obvious one being that he clearly has no training with demolitions. So a tech-use test is very inappropriate if everything is going as planned*.

- Even worse, it sounds like you had done everything except pushing the button to set off the explosives. Why does pushing a single button require a test ?

*Unplanned things like the transmitter in the remote being damaged might need a test to fix it. But you wouldn't notice them until after the button was pressed.

I have to agree. To set up the demolition, is demolition skill. Every aspects. Maybe if the remoter fails, and you have to fix it, maybe you should use tech, but if I'm the GM in this imaginary situation, I would let do it with both skills.

Demolition skill is to solve any other real situations with demolition. In my opinion.
