Starting Out as Rebels

By Laziob, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Hi, this is my first post on the forum, so first of all, greetings! I new to the game (never played it before) so Im just getting knowledge about the rules, factions, cards, ships, and so on.

As for the moment, I am really liking A-wings, atleast on theory haha, so I was wondering what would be the first buys to start off towards a good A-wing squad.

Im thinkiing of something sort of:

  • Force awaken Core Set
  • Rebel Aces Expansion Pack
  • A-Wing Expansion Pack

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks in advance!

That will give you a good a wing list. you may want to pick up the Auto-thruster expansion pack (sorry Star Viper expansion) to help them survive

What type of playing will you do? a wings are in no way competitive save as a filler or a single ace backed by a big ship. i love running a wings as they are so quick but they are very squishy and don't have much damage output

Hi! There are a number of questions to ask starting off. Who are you planning on playing against? Will it be some buddies? Or the guys at the local store? Most people tend to play rather competitively and you should talk to people about you being new. Otherwise, they might bring a fierce list and constantly beat you starting off. If you can get guys to go easy on you, then it's OK. Or...if you happen to have a friend or three to play with that you guys are all on the same level then it's OK.

Next, there are so many cards and pilots out that it's hard to fly with them all, especially the good ones. You might want to consider proxying cards to start off with until you can afford to get the real ones.

One example would be all the pilots for the A-wing, B-wing, and T-70. If you buy the Core Set, you don't get all the T-70 pilots and upgrades. There are some in the single T-70 blister. If you get Rebel Aces, you don't get all the A-wing pilots. You will need to get the A-wing blister to get all those pilots and upgrades. It's a bit frustrating.

There is also cross-faction cards that you will want from non-Rebel ships. A-wings love to use Auto Thrusters, but they only come in the Scum Starviper. So, unless you proxy them, you will need to buy at least one of the Starvipers.

I say that if you are new and willing to play some casual games before you consider tournaments, then I say getting whatever you want to fly is good.

There is also buying someone else's used collection. You can usually get it on discount and you get a good starter set to work with. Check with the local players or on eBay.

Not true. Someone lately just won their store championship with 5 A-wings with Snap Shot (and something else, I think). There are lists that use them more than filler.

this is a very valid point - when starting out it's very tempting to buy whatever you need to get the right build but, if you're playing in a casual setting then just ask if people are ok with you proxying lists - print out the cards you want, cut them into shape and have at it. Or just print out your lists ;)

I might be the exception but if I'm playing newer players, I don't care if they proxy or borrow stuff from me, just so long as they have fun with it - build a few lists, have fun with them, then figure out which moneysinks are really worth it.

and, just because this NEVER gets old

Heck. Our local shop group is just starting out with a lot of newer players so we had a proxy upgrade tournament. Needed the correct pilot but in my case I couldn't find my autothrusters for my Awing. Of course I found it in my tournament bag when I arrived so didn't need the print outs.

Awings are fun. I enjoy flying them in strange ways to disrupt other players. The Prototype pilot, proton rocket, guidance chip routine has a few players flinching a bit when I reach in for the little fighters.

Prototype, chardaan refit is a nice cheap filler ship you can use to learn to disrupt and cause confusion.

Jake Farrell with push the limit, autothrusters, test pilot, outmaneuver/juke is a lot of fun too.

Funny enough I'm the opposite way.

In general, when it comes to strategy games, I tend to go for versatile lists. Theres nothing more annoying for me than have to play a one-trick pony. No two games are equal for me, so versatile lists let me make decisions on the fly, and what I consider best at that specific moment. When you have, lets say, a ship that is only good doing somethin in that way, it becomes quite easy to negate it, and if obliged to do somethin else than what it is good for, it makes you start losing the mind game becuase of irritation ahaha.

That what I liked about the A-wings, it seem that they are the versatile ships I want. It will take me experience playing with them to know if I prefer to have a swarm, or just a few aces, or some as decoy or blockers. But versatile is my go to strategy.

Im from Argentina, so for the moment I dont know how much of a competitive envirorment exists here. I think there are not even local stores to buy or play ahha. But some friends and aqcuianteces of them do play. Nevertheless, I hope they do come aggresive and competitive, it makes you learn at faster rates haha

The ship in the core set & expansions you listed are a great place to start. You can fly 2 A-wings backed up by the X and B. Since you're new, you're going to have to learn the ships and their abilities before you can dive into the competitive scene successfully.

I don't know if you're going to play against friends that already have ships of their own, but to round out the other side, the Imperials, I'd suggest getting the TIE FO expansion and the Tie Advanced PROTOTYPE. Those two along with the TIE FOs you have in the core set should help you learn another faction that has a lot to offer without too much more investment ($$$).

Good luck!

i'd say A-wing expansion (for pilots) Rebel Aces (upgrades) and starviper (AT) are the must buys, any other sets would just be for EPTs
