Stele Open

By Undeadguy, in Star Wars: Armada

So registration for the Stele Open is up but it's 5 rounds Swiss style on a Friday. This seems like a lot to me, considering the NC regionals did 3 rounds in a little under 9 hours.

I wanted to go but this seems like a deal breaker for me.

Do you have to bring Maarak?

I did it last year (and am doing it again this year). It's not so bad. Yes, at the end you're getting a bit loopy but the tacos help. Plus, it's not a regional or national or anything like that, so it's lower stress in my opinion, allowing you to just have a good time.

Yea but it means getting a hotel for Thursday and Friday since I don't want to drive the same day I'd be playing since it is 5 games. Also have to take off work.

If it was Saturday I would go no problem.

I think I could survive 4 rounds. But 5? Brain would be mush.

We did all 5 rounds last year in just over 12 hours. On-site food (a full taco bar) and drinks meant that there were no extended breaks.

It was the best, smoothest-run tournament I've ever been to. And lots of fun! Yes, I was wiped out when it was over, but it was worth it.

5 rounds is rough, but still damned fun in the end. I'm a tentative yes for Stele this year. I'm hoping to convince the organizers to do a cut for 2018 and make it multi-day like X-Wing and IA. They had venue problems with Armada this year, so I'm just thankful we get to play.

I'm strongly considering doing the Steele open. But 5 rounds back to back sounds rough. I'll probably make a decision by the end of the month either way.

I've definitely been cold on Armada lately, but you never know how I'll feel in 4 months.

I'm registered and flight booked. I am actually looking forward to 5 rounds lol. Win or lose that is a lot of Armada. And I am going to spend the lead up week sight seeing around DC.

Wanted to do this for my Birthday.

Not happening now.

Stupid US Government Changeover.

So the boys down south wanna give this a go...

One question is the $65 price tag (in addition to the Armada fee which is DEFINITELY worth it) for the weekend. Is it worth it?

We've been trying to get an excuse to go to DC and this works. :)

Trust me, you're not the only one disturbed by this turn of events.

I went last year and I thought it was worth the money. He provided lunch and dinner as well as snacks and drinks. He also gives out some nice tokens, coins, and alt art cards for the event. I believe FFG will provide him some support with some OP stuff from prior events as well. The five rounds gets tough at the end but is manageable if you take advantage of sitting down early and often. I drove about an hour and a half there the morning of and back that evening which is probably what I will end up doing if I only play Armada.

Absolutely worth it. There's tons of swag, food, and drinks. Last year they had an open bar (not sure that's on for this year though). Having a beer after round 3 was helpful =)

Everyone walks away with something as well - tons of alt art cards from kits, random other tokens and anything else they can get.

Last year I did all three days and had a blast (even though I rarely play X-wing anymore). May just do Armada this time (depends on the wife), but I highly recommend it as a well run and fun event.

Did it last year anc was my first tournament. Was about 14 hours start to finishing awards. Bring snacks but snacks were also provided as well as drinks. Nice swag but from the website last years swag seems better and that awesome mat. Also the games are cut to two hours each.

Worth it? Yes. Good fun, great time meeting and talking to people. No way can I come back the second day to play xwing as I was dead tired.
