Crazy idea....
Do you think Rexlar Brath with rage and ion engines could work to get his ability off more frequently ?
Go for a fly by and pop rage fly away clearing stress then full tilt back in for a second rage attack freeing up your focus for his ability?
I like it, though he costs a bit more than the other Defenders. Was looking fo a way to help get foci without/in addition to rage an came up with this:

I think the shuttle will melt, but that gives more time to pound with the defenders.
You need to fulfill 2 requirements to use the ability: deal damage cards and still have a focus. With all the shields on big ships nowadays and stacks of tokens on all ships you cannot reliably deal enough damage cards to use the ability and leave yourself without the focus token for defense (in most cases).
Rage does slightly improves the roll of red dice but does nothing with the main problems.
If you like the ability and wish to use as much as possible even risking the whole game just for the sake of that fun... take a wing mate for him capable on providing Rex a focus token, and give Rex either: Juke/x7 or CrackShot/x7 or VI and HLC (to roll more red).

EDIT: up: great list! need to try it but I would swap Rage for Juke (and drop engines on Ryad)

THe Defender I think can make Rage work is Ryad.
If you stick in a Bomber Buddy with Inspiring Recruit and Fleet Officer, you can potentially make Raging Rex work better though.
You wouldn't use the rage unless shields were stripped off already
