Bossk (pilot) and Draw Their Fire?

By Jyico, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Last night at a tournament I was running we had a really odd situation come up in the last game.

Bossk was firing at Biggs, and nearby was someone with Draw Their Fire.

Bossk rolls Hit Crit Crit after mods, Biggs has Evade Evade after mods.

I ruled that bossk would hit, so he changed the last uncancelled crit to two hits. Then when damage starts to be dealt we cancel/deal out hits before crits. So the two evades cancel two hits, leaving hit crit. The hit is dealt to Biggs, the crit taken by the ship with Draw their Fire.

However I did find this in this rules forum from February 2016, making me think I ruled incorrectly:

This was before the rules had the flowchart. Does Bossk's ability go off in 6iv instead of 6i? Because then Biggs would have taken two hits, and draw their fire wouldn't have triggered. In the FAQ it does specifically state that Bossk ability happens before DTF.

Bossk triggers after the attack hits (after step 6) so after canceling hits with evades but before dealing damage (so before step 7), in this case the 2 evades would cancel a hit and a crit, leaving a crit, which bossk can convert into 2 hits

Bossk needs to "hit" before his ability can activate and we don't know that happens until the end of step 6 (compare results). His ability triggers sometime between steps 6 and 7; the FAQ does mention those "drawing" abilities do not stop Bossk from being used.

In your example you have the following possible outcomes:

1. Biggs negates a hit and a crit allowing a crit to come through.

1-1. Bossk may split that crit into two hits.

1-2. Anything that could pull of the incoming damage would work so if the crit is coming something could take it using DtF.

If someone wants to use DtF Biggs will either be taking two damage or no damage as another ship draws the crit.

In the original post a major error was made when you split a crit into two hits BEFORE the cancel & compare steps were done. You say the attack was going to hit but how could you possibly know that until after you're done Comparing results? While not shown here perhaps there was some other for of attack mitigation available beyond the rolled Evades.

Bossk is explicitly in the FAQ to trigger before DTF, Xizor and R4D6.

Your initial ruling seems to have taken place during the Modify dice step and this is the number one mistake most player make with Bossk. His ability doesn't happen during those steps. Bossk's ability triggers after step 6 on the flow chart when you get to the question " Did the attack hit? " If the answer is "Yes", then he may trigger and cancel a crit result (if there's still one there) and add two hit results.

Ok so the fact you were using bossk wrong has been covered.

When applied correctly Bossk triggers before Draw their fire.
