My playgroup has recently finished up one campaign and is currently fighting another campaign that uses a map to track progress. If you ever played a map-based campaign under the Genera's Compendium rules in Warhammer, you will be familiar with the system.
Short description: There is a map of a section of the galaxy that is divided into 90-110 sectors. Many sectors are empty space, but some contain asteroid fields, dust clouds or other special rules that either effect movement through them or apply conditions to the battlefield during combat. Players move their markers through the sectors allowing them to build more markers. If two opposing markers move into the same territory, the battle is fought and the winner keeps the sector. The game ends when one of the win conditions is met.
We much prefer these games to one-off 100 pt battles with no background to them. Due to the rules there can be unbalanced fights, alliances bringing a third squadron to the table and various environmental effects (my favorite is the drifting space hulk that moves slowly across the battlefield as an impassable obstruction).
The rules are a living document and I am always revising/updating. The problem with collaboration on site is that we often make changes on the fly and the rules get updated after the fact.
Please put these through the grinder if you are interested. I want to fix any problems/clarify any rules that might be an issue.
