Starting Resources for mixed groups.

By thecowley, in Game Masters

So I am starting a game soon, and am expecting a mix of character carers from all three books. Since not all will be force users, though there might be one or two. Still, is starting them off with a simple freighter of some kind a good way to give them starting power as a group? I like a "free" starting ship. It gives players a bit of autonomy to start and lets them get straight into things. Instead of mucking around on one planet for awhile

See what they come up with and whether they bother knowing each other by the start of your game?

Using all 3 books means they might try to start off with a freighter, y-wings and maybe lightsabers so be careful as you may have to explain why they're using the one ship when they could have their own base a freighter and the twilight the ship Anakin picked up in TCW movie!

Oh hell no, not with out massive starting obligation that automatically means they cant spend any xp till dealing with it all. For one, lightsabers are rare. Like, incredibly. Im using my own AU, where Vader is emperor, and has his own new Justicar order, to replace jedi in the Empire. In Imperial space, having a lightsaber and not being a justicar is illegial. I dont own the Age of Rebellion book, so im guessing base of operations is in that book. Im not opposed to them getting there eventual with all that, but not all up front. And for freighter, I meant one singular ship similar to Twilight etc. Something to get group around in greater galaxy

What is the expected focus of the story? That's the main factor in deciding what sort of group resources they should be looking at.

So are you putting all the PCs under one mechanic (Obligation, Duty, or Morality), or are they using is associated with the core book that their career comes from?

If you're using Obligation for everybody, then go with the EotE option of any ship with a price tag of 120,000 credits or less.

If using Duty, then go with the AoR options.

If it's a free-for-all (EotE careers have Obligation, AoR careers have Duty, and FaD careers have Morality), then I'd say talk it out with your group. Most groups are probably going to go with a ship as their starting resource, but a purely EotE campaign gets a better ship budget because all the PCs are stuck with some amount of Obligation that never really goes away; in that vein my recommendation would be to stick with the FaD cap of 70,000 credits for a ship. Thanks to sourcebooks, there's some pretty decent options to pick from in terms of ships that fall under that restriction, such as the Barloz-class Medium Freighter (Keeping the Peace), the Starlight-class light freighter (Fly Casual), the Legate-class courier (Endless Vigil), and the Kazellis-class light freighter (Savage Spirits) to pick from.

This question kinda answers itself (as other have beat around a bit). The games are distinctly separate, but still compatible. Are you playing EotE with characters from the other games thrown in? Then only offer the EotE starting resources. All you need to decide is which game the group will be playing and use the starting resources from that game.

Now, how you decide which game you're running is up to you (obviously). If you have a plan you might just say, "We're playing AoR, but characters from the other games are allowed." Or you might talk it over with your group and come to a group decision. In the end your game will hopefully have a theme and that's the starting set you should probably offer.

Likely to be closest to EotE. Force users eill still have morality. They pretty much have to in my opinion. Well they dont but it makes it more fun in my opinion. Thank you all for the input

I would pick one starter package from one of the three core rule books and stick with it.

For my EotE/F&D game, the crew started with a light freighter. All characters have an Obligation and F&D career PCs are also saddled with Morality.
