[CCL] 40 Years of Speed(A-Wing Aces pack)

By Razgriz25thinf, in X-Wing

I have received permission to submit a third expansion, so i will be submitting this to the CCL Season 2.

It has yet to be playtested in a significant fashion so i'd love any feedback you can give.

IMO all that A-wings need to be meaningful in other role than 5 GSP swarms or an oddball blocker, is an attack value of 3.

Now, I know their cost was adjusted to having 2 reds, but compare how much playtime the Inquisitor had over last year over named A-wings or for that matter, any other TAP pilots.

Solely because of the fact he had so much more punch. Sure As have en extra EPT, but you have to pay for it, and TAPs get Barrel Roll and free Evade for the same cost as A-wing without Chardan. That's way better than putting points into unsalvageable 2 Attack garbage.

Sooo, my proposal would be to give an alternate title to A-wings. Instead of free EPT slot one, you can increase your Attack value by 1 for 2-3 points. Simple as that.

What is this CCL?

What is this CCL?

Custom Card League

Downvote Spambine!

Could be nice if you get rid of this Sabine nonsense.

Please no Sabine, shes been too overused as is

I like all the pilots, although i will echo the fact that Sabine is overused. The cards seem balanced enough, but i have one question. With the MK. III title, can you attack at R4, and then reduce it to R3?

Looks like there is going to be some intense competition for the Rebel Aces pack slot!

I kind of agree about Sabine... we really do see her in a lot of ships already. As much as it makes sense and she is a good pilot, a new pilot might feel better.

Oh, and Shara Bey was actually in the CCL extension for season one, so we can't include her in season 2 as a new custom pilot. (That reminds me I need to get the CCL season 1 cards vote going). Even if we decide to drop that Shara Bey pilot from the extension, cards that made it to the extension are DQ'd for one season.

Otherwise I'm liking this expansion; it would be nice to have a strong A-wing in the game. Nice job with the card language and images. It would be great to have some playtesting for futher tweaking, and to back up the final submission. Considering that this will be competing against at least 3 other good entries, it'll need to be a pretty strong entry to win

What are you talking about? Sabine Wren is a critically underused pilot.

For the A-Wing? Was she really?? I have no recollection of this...

EDIT: Holy hell, she WAS! Then again, nobody used Rebel anything, so... i wouldnt have known.

Dammit, now i gotta find another A-Wing pilot i actually like. **** whoever got that Shara in last season. **** them to hell.

She had a 2 speed boost I think

I tried that. It was OP as ****. And boring.

No, because you can't attack at range 4.

Pash Cracken is a really neat idea. It's a way to give the A-Wing more power (A problem the ship has often had) while also punishing stress stacking.

Alright so here's the list of changes on my plate:

**** Sabine, i guess. I love her character but i'm a born crowd pleaser, so i'll chuck her and make a new pilot.

Find another A-Wing pilot to replace Shara Bey in name. The ability will stay, though.

Nothing else for right now.

Actually, given a second read to some of those and I really love the Mass Production Model.

It's strong, very strong. So strong that in fact I wouldn't miss the +1 Hull (which is a bit too much, given that A-wing gets X-wing's durability this way).

The additional Procket shot makes the A Aces come back from "not really worth it" to "I can make them count and it feels like a lot of fun". Bravo.

No Ahsoka?

Ahsoka and Ezra have both piloted A-wings in Rebels. You could also go with an unnamed "Phoenix Leader" (though a high PS is a stretch, given how many Phoenix Leaders were offed before Hera took command).

Other A-wing pilots could be Dorset Konnair or Tetengo Noor, both Polearm Squadron A-wing pilots from the Wraith Squadron series. Todra Mayn was Polearm Leader, and Nuro Tualin was a Twi'lek A-wing pilot in Polearm group that nearly succeeded in assassinating Han Solo in the same series (due to Imperial brainwashing).

^Dorset Konnair would be pretty great ngl

(way way back my pilot wishlist for A-Wing Aces was her, Pash, Todra Mayn, and General Crespin, was kinda sad to see the aces they went with)

Perfect. Dorset it is.

OP edited.

Is cracken meant to direct counter zuckuss?

Is cracken meant to direct counter zuckuss?

*cough*

Whatever would make you think that...?

So a few things.

1. I really dislike the idea of an expansion focusing so heavily on a single ship. Even in aces packs, at most there is 2 cards that are ship specific. Here, we have a whopping 4 (to add on to the already 2 ship specific cards for the A-wing). Unless I'm running A-wings, I only get a single upgrade out of this to use. That's painfully restrictive.

Drop one of the titles in favor of a card that can be used on more ships, and drop the A-wing only text on Gimballed Cannons and give it a higher cost (1 is probably even fair).

If I could choose for you, I would drop A-wing MK. III. With 2 new slots and a 4 point cost, it's basically a new ship. Just make a new expansion for it at a later date instead of overcrowding the A-wing.

2. The titles don't need to allow the Test Pilot title. If anything, multiple titles are good because they force you to choose between multiple good options. Mass Production Model is likely under costed with that allowance, so drop the text and leave it at 2 points. MK. II could be free without it, but if you keep it on one, this is the one to keep it on. MK. III, as I mentioned before, I'd rather just disappears.

3. Mass Production Model is too text heavy. Ordnance tokens (yes, they are in fact called ordnance tokens, not munition tokens) just need a rules card, and I'm confused why they don't have one. I say make one of those that simply says "When you are instructed to discard an Upgrade card, you may discard 1 ordnance token on that card instead." . Done and done. Now the size of the card text is manageable.

4. L'ulo's ability needs to be more appropriately worded. The text "at the end" has no clear interpretation. It could mean at the end of the activation phase for all I know. Make sure to use cards with similar abilities to identify the way the text should read to assure there is no rule bending or misunderstanding. Looking at Stay on Target and Lightning Reflexes, we can conclude the ability should be worded as such-

"When you reveal a 2 <bank symbol left> or <bank symbol right>, you may treat that maneuver as a white maneuver. If you do, after you execute the maneuver on your dial, you may rotate your ship 180°."

Worded as such, this allows for some shenanigans with Stay on Target (as you can treat the revealed maneuver as white, change to another maneuver, and then still rotate), but if you want to restrict that, simply reword it to say "...after you execute a white maneuver on your dial...", as all of the other 2 speeds are green on an A-wing dial. I think a little SoT shenanigans is a good thing though and could even be promoted in your "preview article" if the expansion were to win.

Some of the feedback here is nice. However, i stand firm in that an A-Wing Aces pack should focus on A-Wings. That's sort of the point. A-Wing Mk.III will likely not be removed unless a significant number of people state that it's addition would likely cause them to downvote the whole pack. I'm not married to Mk. III, but i feel it's addition is what makes this A-Wings pack 40 years of Speed and not just 20 or so years of speed.

Mass Production Model will probably have A-Wing Test Pilot title thing removed just simply because thematically it makes more sense that way.

Gimballed Cannons has no thematic reason to be changed. No other Rebel craft that doesnt have a turret has cannons that gimble. It should remain an A-Wing only upgrade.

Wording change on L'ulo is imminent, thank you for pointing out the fault. I like the SoT shenanigans too, seems fun.

I would make a rules card for ordnance tokens, but strange eons doesn't support rules cards. :/ Approximately how much people would be upset at me if i removed the whole clause about how to use ordnance tokens? We all know what Extra Munitions does and what ordnance tokens do. That would really clear up the text, i agree.
