Has this already been suggested? (catapults, ballistas...) Would be a great addtion to the game...
Siege units...
The trouble with siege units is they'd get to fire once or twice a battle due to reload times (might make excellent specialist card though) and aren't that great at hitting mobile units. I think we'd be better off with fire arms that started to come in during the HYW (theres some great early 'guns' that were powder inside a metal vase which fired large arrows) though I wouldn't want to see ranks of muskets.

hmm... what you say is true but I still think that sieges units, properly balanced, could be well integrated into BL and would add realism to medieval battles. When I look at a BL setup, I just can't help myself but to imagine 3 or 4 catapults behind my lines, seems only natural...
and by the way, is this what you meant?? (copy and paste, don't know why but link adding wasn't working)
I've kicked around some ideas for siege units, but I haven't tried anything yet.
My basic idea was something like this
Catapult
Takes 2 points to activate (so cannot be used w/ a scout card, for example); can move or shoot, not both
Can shoot non-line-of-sight; range 2-5 (no melee value); does 2D to target hex; does 1D splash damage to every adjacent hex (including friendly fire); hits on SoS; 2 figures in a unit
Ballista
Takes 2 points to activate; can move or shoot, not both
Requires line of sight; range 2-5; does 4D damage to target hex; hits on SoS; 2 figures in a unit
That's almost exactly what I had in mind also, seems pretty well balanced. How would it take hits though? What I had in mind was that first of all, neither the catapult or ballista can be bold, and when it is attacked, only ONE SoS symbol is needed to kill it BUT it carries no banner and ignores ALL color helmets rolled against it.
Hey Torche, I had the same thoughts as you. I'd love to see siege units. I actually brought this up to Richard at last years Origins Gamefair. His response was something like "just wait. hold that thought". I think he as this worked out already. Question is where will this fall in FF's production lists.
I agree with a previous poster. I'm thinking Catapults would be more like a specialist unit as I can see something like "attacks every 5 turns" on the card. Or more possibly "put down 5 reload tokens. each turn take off a token. when the last token is gone catapult can be fired".
Sounds like Borg has something in the works. Would be a cool addition.
The idea about how to kill a catapult is interesting above, but I was figuring they would follow standard rules in this regard. They have 2 models/figures, and so take 2 hits to kill. I would give them a banner.
I think my ballista might be a bit too powerful, not sure. Ranged attacks are pretty powerful, especially now that we have battle savvy. I'm not quite sure about whether or not they should hit on SoS. Maybe if they hit on SoS it needs to take 3 pts to activate them?
I kinda like the idea above that it takes 5 tokens to reload them, execpt the tokens are sort of fiddly. That's why I just said it takes more than 1 activation point. Seemed simpler and cleaner.
