Sure Gamble and non-standard minuses

By General Zodd, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Evening all!

Just upgraded my solo Skids deck with a couple of 'Sure Gamble's. I immediately came up with a rules question that I wanted to check with people.

The card states;

{Fast. Play after you reveal a chaos token with a negative modifier. Switch that token's "-" with a "+".}

Okay, so, question, does a special token that has a minus modifier assigned by the difficulty setting card for that scenario, can I use it? To illustrate, in The Gathering Easy/Standard setting, the CULTIST token is -1, plus if you fail you take 1 horror. Clearly you would still take a horror if you fail, but would you count that as +1 with Sure Gamble? Do does it require the token to have a printed "-" on it?

Even if that works, does it work on variable negative modifiers like, in the same scenario, the SKULL token, worth -X, where X is the number of Ghouls at your location.

I *think* it works for both situations as the token has a negative modifier for that scenario. I think they would have said "printed value" or some such if it is otherwise, but I may be biased... Grateful for your thoughts!

I can think of nothing in the Rules Ref which might have you not considering symbol tokens' negative values as 'negative modifiers', whether fixed or in "..where X is equal to..." instructions. Take that '-' symbol and replace it with a '+'.

What Noaloha said.

Excellent, as I said, wanted to make sure I wasn't succumbing to wishful thinking! Thanks!

Yup, Sure Gamble works fine on the symbol tokens.

Had that question myself. The way I thought of it, revealing a special token might be considered as triggering an effect on the scenario reference card, and not as the token having a negative modifier itself.

So I asked Matt, and he said it's fine, Sure Gamble works with special tokens.

By strict reading of the card, I would have actually thought it had no effect on the special tokens because the token itself does not have a negative modifier, the scenario is assigning a negative modifier to it. But it's cool that someone "official" has deemed that it does work. The investigators need all the help they can get!

I would have said "No" as well. In fact it would not surprise me to see them change their minds on this. (It has happened before with LOTR.)
