How to get prize kits to distribute?

By MonkeyInSpace, in X-Wing

Ahoy hoy,

I go to a LGS where there is zero X-Wing support and almost no X-Wing/Armada stuff stocked, but they are happy enough that a bunch of us have started going there on a Tuesday and playing (we are now up to 5 regulars). WE have been talking about trying to start a league or run a few tournies and I so I asked the owner if we was able to get any prize support (alt cards or whatever) and he literally just shrugged at me and then he made eye contact like he was really excited about the idea, but he just farted and stood up a little before saying "Asmodee are jerks."

So, I was wondering if there is a way that the regulars are able to get prize kits without the support of an LGS? Can we register as some kind of community club or is this strictly for shops only?

thank you in advance,

Competitive Monkey

Generally, for Stores Only.

In the US, you might be able to find a distributor to help you... But outside of the US, you're dealing with Unique distributors, and they'll generally lock down...

To get from Lion Rampant, for example, I need to put in some pretty hefty minimums to maintain an account with them...

My LGS get them directly from FFG. They have a email address retailers can use to order stuff like this from. So best best is to look through the FFG site and find their retail support email.

If you are not a retailer, then no.

You're right you can't order one without a retailer number. But they're like $25 so there's no reason the LGS in this case couldn't order one, just charge the group for the kit or something.

Well. Ebay and even amazon seems to have game night kits for reasonable prices, I assume those come from stores who sell them against the wishes of distributors and then there is always the option to just ask your lfgs to order some kits for your club. As long as you PAY them they should have no issues with providing a club with game night kits and store credit coupons, if you use their rooms it becomes basically a store tournament run by volunteers. Lastly printing out custom cards or custom models is easy and provides a great price support as well. You don't have to play by the FFG rules if you run an unofficial event, which is a huge bonus imho. If the community is small and has a lot of not as invested plays than allowing for proxies is for example a good way to make it more welcoming to new players with small pockets.

Furthermore I don't think that the kits are good price support in the first place for long running league.

That sounds like the same attitude that the previous FLGS in town used to have. You know, the one that's no longer in business.

Go rogue, tell everyone X amount to join in, use half to order tokens from Litko or Team Covenant or Etsy, use the other half to get a gift certificate from the store as the top prize.

Sounds like you're going to have to open your own shop... ;)

I'd go with what outerrimrebel suggests. Do it yourselves since your LGS isn't being supportive. Get the cash and buy some stuff from ebay. Maybe one of you can mod or paint a ship and offer that up as a prize as well.

Personally, I'd be happy if the prize was a pizza!

Sure, there's a secondary market for them. But as for having the store order them for them, if the store isn't willing to order the kits and have an event at the store, I feel it's unlikely they'd be willing to order the kits for someone else, but of course they are welcome to try.

Oddly enough, that's how this one survived - as bad as it is, the rest were worse. FartMan is the only game left in town

That's why i was asking about a 'community club' or similar - I don't want to open a shop, but I would be very ok with registering somehow as a club just so I can support the fledgling group I have gotten going.

I asked about the same thing with my local group and got the same answer. You have to be a retailer in order to order the kits. Thankfully we have a retailer here who supports the community (like serious support, 4' gondola (shelf) with X-wing and Armada on it) though I don't know if they've ordered a kit lately...

Another option would be to order an alt-sculpt from Mel Mini on shapeways and offer that up as a prize. Granted that's a more expensive option but a totally viable means of offering a prize for your own event/campaign. An idea that I've had was teaming up with an artist friend of mine who has a professional embroidery machine and making a run of unit patches. Granted what you offer as a prize will depend on how much time and effort you want to expend.

Please tell me that your LGS is called FartMan. I'm SO wishing that it's true.

No, that is just what people call him.

The shop is called "Anal Invaders". It's a hole.

Just make up your own kits. Get some cool Star Wars bottle openers and keychains of eBay for like, $1.50 each, buy some cool acrylic stuff (dials, tokens etc) and maybe some neat art prints or T-Shirts and make your own prizes. Hell, even just buy some FFG stuff for your prizes (dial upgrades would be a good one, as would most stuff from the new waves).

I think it is the right time to point out that in the game night kits is mostly useless stuff anyway and acrylic tokens are super cheap to order from third parties. Custom alt cards are in much higher demand than alt art cards from the kits (though admittedly custom ones are not FFG tournament legal).
