First Squad (Need advice)

By Ninjakino, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I just made my very first squad (I am very new to Xwing) and I need some help/criticism. I made it with what I have so far, and I want ways to make it a little better, Etc.

Luke Skywalker(Xwing) (28)
-R2D2(4)
-Integrated Astromech(0)
-Draw Their Fire
-Proton Torpedoes(4)

Jake (AWing)(24)
-Proton Rockets(3)
-Snapshot(2)
-Determination(3)

Blue Squadron Pilot(BWING)(22)
-Collison Detector(0)
-Bwing/E2(1)
-Heavy Laser Cannon(7)
-Dash Rendar(2)
-Seismic Torpedo(2)
-Flechette Torpedoes(2)

One ship at a time.

Luke: lose the Proton Torpedo. Torps suck without multiple dice mods.

Jake: Snap Shot is better on ships with low pilot skill. Determination suffers from a case of "looks good, but something else is always better.". Jake's favorite EPT's are Push the Limit and Veteran Instincts, with Lone Wolf, Outmaneuver and Adaptability as runner-ups. Give him Autothrusters; he will live longer.

B-wing: You're spending a lot of points on something that might die before it takes a shot. For the points you spent on upgrades you could be flying an ace. Keyan Farlander with Opportunist is pretty effective. Ten Num with Mangler Cannon is another good combo. Nerra Dantels has some interesting builds. All B-wings share a short lifespan, so higher pilot skill helps get something for your points investment.

Oh geez, I thought I had made sometihng worthwhile. Thanks, ill fix it!

Even with the fixes, a list like this has glaring weaknesses. Fly it anyway. Learn from your own mistakes instead of copying hot-ticket tournament lists off the internet. You'll be a better player for it.

This is great advice. Fly your list and see what did/didn't work and why. I'll disagree with jmswood on the proton torpedoes however. I think at the right momen especially on a late game closer like Luke, they can really shine. Take a target lock as an action if Luke has nobody in arc for example. Come around and take a focus action and then ... you've likely killed or really hurt a ship. Granted 4 points might be spent better elsewhere but... Luke + Protorps = iconic!

Next week a local-ish gaming store is throwing an zwing tournament so ill go and hopefull get to try this out on my own. Maybe itll give me a better idea of how to start building squads and stuff, maybe ill get some criticism aswell.

It might help us help you if you listed your ships. Possibly in your signature line as many people are wont to do.

I'm new-ish too (since Summer) and I used to try and place every upgrade possible on each ship because: "More upgrades mean more abilities & more abilities mean more damage output and surviving longer!"

Well, I couldn't always remember which card did what, to whom or when half the time and it turned out to be a waste of points.

My advice: fly leaner ships. Generally one higher PS and fill the rest out with generics until you've learned those few upgrades well enough to recite to your mamma.
