Beginner buying advice.

By Cpt Barbarossa, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Hi all,

Everytime i walk past the Imperial Assault packs, I'm increasingly tempted to get involved... Any quick advice on what to purchase (beyond core set I imagine)? The skirmish mode sounds fun, I'm not necessarily looking for "meta lists" to go straight into the competitive games, just want to have fun.

Sorry, i'm sure this is the kind of question that gets posted here every other day, boring for some but if you guys have some good advice on what to buy/avoid, i'll take it!

Cheers

Start with the core box. Try the skirmish, try the campaign, then ask more.

Just the core box will do. It has everything you need to play both variants of the game. You will get a better idea from doing that. Both variants are awesome

If you're not sure you want to play skirmish, I wouldn't buy any ally / villain packs at all unless you're into collecting figures separate from the game. The core has cardboard tokens for some of the early wave figures so you can play them in campaign or proxy them in unofficial skirmish matches.

Depending on how interested you are (and how deep your pocketbook is, I'd pick up the core box and all Wave 1 packs.

Here, the list of what packs go with which wave.

For the most part (there are some noted exceptions), you need the core box of the corresponding wave to be able to play the pack, so keep that in mind.

not to be a brute, but there are 2 of these threads a week, you could look at some of the similarly titled posts and find all the answers you want in the few pages below.

Thanks for the advice guys !

Lots of good advice up top, is there a local group in your community that plays? Would be great for you to get some beginner friendly games in. Ask them to play core box only if that is all you have.

I know I bought into the game because of the skirmish side.

I like the Star Wars story and the characters. I really enjoy miniatures, so it fit right into my hobbies.

It was easy to start with the core and added all the characters I like.

I don't care about meta gaming. I want my gaming to be fun, so there is no pressure for me to get what I don't like just to be "competitive".

If this seems like your approach, then get what you like and have fun!

BTW, I have had a hard time staying away from x-wing only because my budget is limited and I have committed to other games. I've played it once and really liked it.

Tough choices...

Probably the most used figure pack that I've bought is Hired Guns. They're dirt cheap figures (as in the game, not any cheaper to purchase from your local gaming store), great in many situations in the campaign for the Empire player and also decent in skirmish.

But I second the opinions to just buy the core pack, play the game and if you find it fun, then buy more. Also, for both skirmish and campaign I found the extra dice pack to be useful.
