Which expansion to buy if I want a boost for the heroes

By SatanShiro, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi

We started playing descent a month ago. we're having a blast.

Heirs of blood is fun and interesting.

We are playing it without any expansions as it came with the base game.

So far the heroes won the first quest and the overlord won 2. The next quest is rise of urthko and by what I'm seeing at the forums the heroes have a 3/10 chance to win this.

I'm thinking of buying a small expansion to boost the heroes a bit before rise of urhko.

There are a lot to choose from.

the newest small expansion looks cool but seems more of a sequel and also tougher for heroes than usual..

What do you guys think can be the best choice for me.

Thanks and have a great day

Adding an expansion to a campaign in progress does not help the heroes as the important decisions (heroes and classes) have been already made. Additional shop items usually do not shift balance in favor to the heroes as the shop deck will be diluted. On the other hand, the OL might get a significant boost because of greater monster variety and more overlord cards to choose from.

By the way, 1:2 won quests does not indicate any imbalance at all. However, if you think you need to help the heroes a bit (maybe to keep them interested in the game) my suggestion would be to choose interesting (and suboptimal) monsters.

There isn't any expansion that will boost the heroes mid-game (and honestly they usually don't need it).

The Shadow of Nerekhall has some great heroes and classes, and is probably one of the best expansions for your buck (includes new heroes, monsters, classes and a complete campaign).

That said, don't judge the power level of the game based on act I. Typically Act I is just about gearing up, gaining money etc, once the Interlude and Act II roll around, expect the OL to stomp the heroes for at least the first quest, but once the heroes have had a chance to shop from the Act II store a bit, the game will swing back to the heroes favor for the Finale.

The descent campaign is competitive, but that doesn't mean each individual quest is balanced, you really have to finish the entire campaign before you can assess whether one side had the advantage or not.

Technically, you're not even allowed to add content mid campaign ;)

some classes are stronger than another, same for some heroes.

So, depending on expansions, you can come up with better teams. But the important choice that the heroes made and a few luck will change it deeply from one game to another;

Thanks everyone for your reply. I appreciate it. I guess I won't get an expansion until we want to continue to another campaign.

So I'll just get a big expansion( possibly the one recommended here shadow of nerekhall) when the time comes.

If anyone has different recommendations I'll be glad to hear.

Currently I don't see a reason to get a small expansion.

Thanks and have a nice day.
