Upgrading ships weapons. Or 'How to shoot behind you'.

By LugWrench, in Game Masters

My group stumbled upon the upgrade rules in the EotE core book, the other day, and has been wondering what the limits are on upgrades to ships...specifically, to the ships weapons.

The group has been wondering if it is possible to upgrade a weapon system on a ship from a fixed firing arc to a 360 degree turret. Their ship (a Wayfarer-class) has a dorsal weapon mount that only fires forward. Is it possible to upgrade that to a turret, and if possible, what would they be looking at for hardpoints, cost, skill checks, etc?

Check out page 271 of the EotE core rule book. Table 7-17 should give you a great starting point. If they do not want to add another weapon to the ship what I would suggest is for them to purchase the same weapon. Only specify that its now a turret. so for 8000 credits they buy a new Turret mounted Quad laser turret and get it installed in the same spot. (Basically they are paying for a turret mounting) Could even give them a discount since they already have the actual weapon. :) Or a trade in allowance. The new Quad would have the Fire Arc: All. But still only on the Dorsal. So it would not be able to target things Below the ship. But it would be 360!

I think you mean below the ship.

Right thanks

I judge this often based on the designs of the players, and then give them the results based on their rolls (or who they hire) In this example for instance, building a turret where there was a simple fixed gun might, for example, give them the arc they want, but it is so bulky and heavy it will make the ship perform very poorly if they try to fly in atmosphere. And it might require a power upgrade and hydraulics piping, which might might make a weak spot that is not as well contained and shielded as others, which might just make an issue later when they least expect it...

I get where you're coming from, but being stuck in a fat hog like the Wayfarer without a turret is just painful. I wouldn't punish the players further by saddling them with more pain. I'd bump up the price of the turreted gun and call it a day.

Just a suggestion (since there isn't a rule for this) but going from a Fixed weapon to a turret mount, I'd recommend costing 1 Hard Point in addition to the cost (minimum!) . . . which might be Cr1,000 for the base cost of a generic "accessory" upgrade. Turret mounts are a bit bulkier than the actual weapon.

So yeah, IMSWU* Turret Upgrade costs Cr1,000, 1 HP.

Bah! Don't drag that hack Hammerstein into Star Wars! I'd sooner watch a Jar-Jar Binks one-man show remake of the Life Day Special!

Well, I went with it and let them mod the weapon emplacement into a full All-arc weapon. It did cost them one of the HP's on the ship, as well as 8,000 cr. I explained that the weapon as-is on the ship is only 'wired' for fixed-arc, and that they would have to pay for a model that was 'wired' for all-arc. They were okay with it, and the mechanic they got to do the job was fairly competent, so I won't give them any surprises. This time....

However, they did leave one loose end in the module that may come back to haunt them.... *Insert Evil GM Grin Here*

LOL!

This sounds appropriate. Installing the housing for a turret in place of a fixed mount would not be exactly easy. But not impossible.
