Announcing: Custom Card League Season 2

Contemplating my Punisher fix idea.

I feel the punisher needs a fix more in role than cost. At the moment a bomber does the same things but cheaper.

When I mocked up the card my initial instinctwas to make it 0 points like the other fixs. But should probably be 2 or 3 points thinking about it more.

By making it an "anyone can take this" system slot, it takes the narrative focus off "this is the punisher's thing" and onto "this is a cool thing Punishers can do.

Ewings, Bwings, G1A, IG88, Lambadas, Upsilons, Tie SFs, even the Ghost can use this with their primary weapons, ghost can even use it with TLT, but they all roll an extra die. The punisher, as the only munition platform with a system slot, can use this with torpedos and missiles, which DONT grnt an extra green from super-long range. (because, y'know,, they track)

It's not the entirety of any punisher fix, but it's an interesting start.

giving it to turrets might be a bit much IMO. but a general use system seems fine.

I'd deliberately left of it letting you targetlock beyond range 3 so it had to be paired with LRS instead of guidance chips to avoid making it overly strong (as well as the extra defense die even from ordnance).

Still yours seems a better idea than mine and I'll probably run with something much like it.

CONSIDERATIONS:

It's an expansion that not only to add the "Imperial Y-Wing", but offer some useful upgrade cards.

The dial is a cross between the X-Wing and the Y-Wing. Maybe too good? The ship was quite capable of keeping track of the enemy in the PC games.

I made it 1 agility because this was hard to dodge enemy fire (maybe because of the large profile?) - but 2 agility wouldn't be far fetched (in this case, the hull or shield should be reduced).

Lore-wise, it would have 5 hull (equivalent to the Y-Wing) and 3 shield (better than the X-Wing), making it tough to kill.

It has only 2 missiles (lore accurate) and the cannon, but an upgrade card that allows it to replace 1 missile for 1 other ordnance (the ship was known to carry torpedoes when needed).

The "Alpha Strike" elite upgrade can be used by pilots with more than one ordinance/canon/turret, but it is specially useful in the Gunboat, allowing an easy missile+cannon combo. Would Tomax Bren be broken with it? You tell me. (if yes, I can restrict the upgrade to the Gunboat or just replace it with another card)

The Gunboat is the most produced/deployed Imperial hyperspace capable starfighter, which I explored in the title: "Imperial Reinforcements". It adds an interesting mechanic, which really differentiates the Gunboat of the TIEs. Since the common TIEs had no hyperspace, and the high tech, hyperspace capable TIEs (Defender, Avenger), are so rare that wouldn't be available everywhere, that's the job of the Gunboats. It also emulates the massive military power of the Empire and remind the PC old sims (where the Imperials are able to call Gunboats as reinforcements).

I don't know if the price is right (is deploying later, but where you want, actually a drawback?)

Xeal is a colleague of Mareek Stele's who was MIA and later returned to action with "Killer Eyes".

Noble Calder's ability is kind of uninspired, so suggestions are most welcome. Not many information about this guy, except that he was the commander of a squad (Veerpal?). Maybe he could be the lower PS unique pilot instead of Xeal (swap the PS of both).

I added the other guy (Arajen Turmen) here, with a wonky ability, as an alternative.

Mareek Stele piloted the Gunboat, but this wasn't one ship who made him famous (like the Defender, the Avenger and the Missile Boat).

Possible pilots: (most in Legends)

  • Gunboat generics (Squadrons): Nu, Tau, Mau, Mu, Rho, Eagle, Raven, Talon, Veerpal
  • Gunboat uniques: Arajen Turmen, Noble Calder, Xeal (but not specially this ship), Mareek Stele

I was told I couldnt have a Tie Advance "Avenger" ace pack, because the Tie Avenger was in last season. How does your entry work with Gunboat, then?

From what I saw of the tournament the V-Wing got a little fringe play in a couple of Scum lists (With uh, Reach from memory was the top ace in the ship), but just wasn't quite competitive. Which is fine - I think it hit about as close to balanced as I could have hoped it to be.

I'll see if I can put some opinions in some ears - its a pretty flimsy interceptor and without the white T-Rolls really pales compared either to true interceptors like the Fang or lite-Interceptors like the A-Wing or TAP.

I flew Cykatro! But yah, I'd happily vote for a revision to the v-wing. Needs a bit of extra love

About the Season 1 review, I intend to vote to keep almost all cards in the league. I think it is good to grow a CCL "culture" and not throw away everything in the past (but sure, some cards should be revised, like the cost of the Gunboats).

From what I saw of the tournament the V-Wing got a little fringe play in a couple of Scum lists (With uh, Reach from memory was the top ace in the ship), but just wasn't quite competitive. Which is fine - I think it hit about as close to balanced as I could have hoped it to be.

I'll see if I can put some opinions in some ears - its a pretty flimsy interceptor and without the white T-Rolls really pales compared either to true interceptors like the Fang or lite-Interceptors like the A-Wing or TAP.

I used it very exclusively and it did me really well for me, personally. It had enough modification options to be offensively and defensively covered, and with a decent dial to boot. I think it could use a sliiiiiiiiiiiiiight buff but it wouldnt need much.

We've got 5/8 responses already, and one question is already decided - the TIE Avenger has 5 votes for 'Revise'. So you can start thinking about what you would change about the avenger; it will definitely be staying in but with revision.

I think the ship was just too expensive. Maybe with this title it would be worth it:

Updated two cards of the proposed refurbished Gunboat expansion.

Alpha Strike restricted to small ships (can't help U-Boats anymore). Reduced the cost for the Linked (former Integrated) Ion Cannons.

Interactions between cards that make it to the CCL extension are something that you shouldn't worry about too much at this point. There's no sense in changing current submissions based on what might make it into the final CCL extension. We'll deal with interactions between cards in the extension when we know what we're getting.

Since we'll be doing expansions 2 at a time (2 per faction), we'll have more and more knowledge about what cards will be going into the extension as we go through the process, and we can adjust expansions as necessary. Also, before everything goes into the extension, it'll be reviewed by the committee, and unintended interactions will be in that committee's wheelhouse.

I know the X-wing isnt quite in the meta anymore, but for thematic games...... and those who respect the x-wing

I voted to keep (or keep with revisions) all ships in the first season, but there were several individual pilots and quite a few upgrades I voted to drop.

I know the X-wing isnt quite in the meta anymore, but for thematic games...... and those who respect the x-wing

This card would have great synergy with Wedge

You could review the wording for this card. Something like: "You may add 1 [critical hit] to a friendly ship's combat roll..."

I don't know if there is need of specifying the phase, though...

Removed the second shot's secondary weapon requirement to open it up to Tie Ds, Xwings, and other ships with only a single munition but a strong primary that usually makes munitions pointless. Also raised it point.

Instead of a double tap, use "Alpha Strike" as hitting FIRST, not hitting hardest. I'm not even sure if this card needs to be discardable- could be a nice buff for tie bombers.

What if Piggy's already shot when the ally attacks?

Then you obviously cant use the ability, as the ability clearly states, if you use the ability, you cant attack that turn.
